“The world is big and there’s much to see, and a bear must go where she wants to be. And a bear as curious as me longs to gaze at the starlit sea!” A book-loving bear sets off to see the world. She takes one special thing—her Bear’s Big Book of Being Wise. But when she meets different creatures, each needing her help, she discovers that books aren’t just brilliant at fixing problems–they can also help you make new friends. And if you’re lucky, books can take you to a very special place indeed . . .
I am very much impressed with the lyrical poetry of this book as well as the illustrations.
This book is all about one female bear who was roaming around all the places to find her ultimate peace in. She was carrying a book "Bear’s Big Book of Being Wise" and hence while travelling whoever she met, she did a treatment for the injuries or illness they were having. At last she boarded a ship and during that she realized that having book can fix different problems and even help her making more friends.
'Frances Tosdevin' has done a very promising work for the book-lovers and this picture book will let more children falling towards book reading. 'Sophia O'Connor' is an illustrator of this book, and, I must say, she did a remarkable job.
In my own words, "There is a book on every single subject known to humanity, what you pick decides what you become."
This is such a cute book! I love that it has cute animals as well as books as part of the story and the illustrations are just fantastic. The writing has a good rhythm for the most part and I really like the subject but every once in a while the rhymes or rhythm wasn’t quite right and it threw me off. Overall though, this is a really fun book that we’ve already read three times.
Perfect for any season, for the curious minds with an adventurous spirit this short mesmerising book tells the story of an adventurous bear who sets out to discover the best beings and the best of nature on her journey.
The illustration is mind blowing!
Hope this book sparks the adventurous spirit in you like it did for me!
Thank you, North Star Editions/ Jolly Fish Press, for the advance reading copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Frances Tosdevin for the eARC! This review is my own opinion and words.
I adored this book! I loved the sense of adventure, the compassion toward other critters who crossed the bear’s path, and the illustrations are beautiful. This is definitely one that I enjoyed sharing with my own young kids.
"The Bear and Her Book" story follows a bear who loves to read books and learn new things. The bear is portrayed as a positive and helpful character who explores the outside world to support her fellow beings.
The story teaches several important values, including the importance of helping others, finding reliable solutions to problems, having a thirst for knowledge, and never stop learning. The bear is a relatable and engaging character, brought to life through expressive and colorful illustrations.
The author narrates the story in the third person, allowing readers to travel with the bear and experience the adventures she undergoes. Through the bear's journey, readers will not only learn how animals help each other, but they will also see the world from an animal's unique perspective.
Overall, "The Bear and Her Book" is a well-written and beautifully illustrated children's book that teaches important values in an engaging and relatable way. It's a book that children will enjoy reading and learning from, and it's a great way to introduce them to the idea that all beings on earth have unique experiences and perspectives. .
De beer en haar boek. Tekst: Frances Tosdevin. Illustraties: Sophia O’Connor.

This was a really fun, wholesome read about a bear who travels and wants to see all the things. The rhymes were done really well and the illustrations were very beautiful. I especially loved when our bear main character finds themselves in the bookstore, passing the time away with book two of their favorite book, Bear's Big Book of Being Wise and now I wonder if there really is such a book out there. Overall, this was really cute and precious. A story I think many young kids will love and enjoy especially with such a strong theme of helping others.
All thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions are honest and my own.
This is a review of the text and story of this book, as my particular advanced copy did not seem to have illustrations readily available.
The Bear and Her Book is about a Bear that wants to see the wide world and takes off with a book to travel. Along the way she meets multiple creatures, and the wisdom of her book allows her to help the creatures. Eventually she arrives in a place with many books recognizing that you can explore the world through books as well as through travel.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and this is definitely a book for book lovers, and would be a fun read aloud to share with children the joy and possibility of books and libraries.
The Bear and Her Book is an elementary librarian’s dream book! A bear sets off to see the world with nothing but her book, Bear’s Big Book of Being WIse. Her book proves to be useful in helping animals she encounters with different ailments they have - which is a great way for educators to prove the value of nonfiction books. Her book also takes her to a number of different places - which is a great way for educators to showcase the fact that books can take our minds anywhere! The Bear and Her Book reads with a beautiful cadence and rhyme and is accompanied by gorgeous, rich illustrations. A perfect book for bedtime, classrooms, and libraries!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this children’s book ARC opportunity!
This is a sweet story of a bear who goes on adventures in search for more. The bear meets friends she helps along the way and in the end finds where she belongs.
This is beautifully illustrated and shows how wonderful it is to help others along our journey.
The Bear and Her Book written by Frances Tosdevin with gorgeous art by Sophia O’Connor is a gentle and easy-to-read story filled with adventure and kindness.
An inquisitive and book-loving bear sets out on a journey to explore the world. The only thing that accompanies her is her special book “Bear’s Big Book of Being Wise.” Bear’s adventures take her to amazing locations. She travels from her beautiful home in the mountains to the seashore where she helps a wounded crab and then to the jungle where she helps a sick crocodile. She also goes to the desert and meets a lizard in need. Bear’s final stop is the world of people. She soon discovers a wealth of exciting books and realizes that is exactly where she wants to be!
This is such a serene and calming book! The rhyming and easy-to-read sentences are excellently done with great word choices so that everything flows seamlessly. The rhymes effortlessly move the story along and they really are fun to read out loud. Kids will particularly love the repetition.
Bear is a lovely, kind, and helpful character. I love her sense of adventure and desire to experience new things. I also love that she makes friends wherever she goes. I do wish she had a name but the lack of it doesn’t negatively affect the story for me.
I love the uniqueness of an adventuring bear who loves to read. I really like that Bear’s beloved book helps her gain knowledge but also leads her to new friends and adventure. I particularly love the book’s ending with a promise of more fun to come! This book gently encourages little readers (and us adults!) to be kind, be open to wonder and adventure, and to enjoy all the experiences that books can bring.
I am in absolute awe of the full-page and full-colour illustrations. They are so soft and eye-catching. Bear is very cute with her pleasant and friendly face. I love her ever present little book bag around her neck! I also love that she looks very much like a real bear and not a cartoon bear.
The animals and the scenery aren’t painstakingly fully detailed. However, that doesn’t really matter because I really appreciate the softness and whimsicalness of the art with its serene and breathtaking scenery. The many animals like the crocodile and lizard still do show some great personalities.
Thank you to NetGalley and North Star Editions for this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is great for children (of all ages!), and the illustrations inside the book are representative of a beautiful yearning. The book doesn't have many words, and it is written in rhyme. Very simplistic types of words used, but the overall theme of the book is very complex. I would say the lesson that this book teaches is one that many adults have even missed fairly often. To sum up the meaning of the lesson this book teaches I would simply say, "All I ever needed was right in front of me." The book shows this lesson by using pictures to explain that everyone should have a love for reading and not for galavanting off, chasing far-fetched ideas. The most important things you need to know are normally very close to you, and it's up to you to look in your surroundings for meaning in your life. You may not be able to solve the age old quandry, "What is the meaning of life?" but you CAN find out the meaning of YOUR life. That is a very important distinction. Hopefully, you will also see that this book encourages us to be grateful for the things we have and are given and not to need to go shopping all the time to fulfill our desires. All you need is shelter and food and clean running water, along with maybe heating and air conditioning and for your shelter to be clean. All of these things are available to you no matter who you are. If you search for these basic things instead of spending your hard earned money on little meaningless things like a new outfit or a manicure or going out to eat, you will find that you will be much happier just cooking at home and trying a new recipe. The great thing about cooking at home, is that you can literally cook anything in the world. You don't need anyone to give you a "menu" of what to choose from. You have a computer, or electronic device, search for a cool recipe (especially one that is literary in nature that goes along with a book or movie) and try it out. You can learn so many things from reading and that's also what this book illustrates. You can be a helping hand to others due to knowledge you acquired by reading books.
There was a bear who lived in the forest & with her, she carried a book that contained everything she needed to know. Her life was calm & settled. After having read her book, she comes to realize that there is perhaps more for her to learn. Through her journey, she voyages through landscapes & geography that ask her to reflect; Has she reached the pinnacle of knowledge? Is there more for her to see?
Young readers will find in this book a gentle reminder that one’s place in the world can be a journey; there need not be a settled neighbourhood that shelters them unless this is where they feel most at home. Through stories, books, music, & artistic mediums, young readers may allow themselves to dream of the knowledge they have yet to acquire. These messages are valuable to all readers, particularly to those amongst us for whom the moral of the story will be warmly received.
Ultimately, young readers who are enthused about the wandering nature of life & the possibility of gathering knowledge wherever they may go will find in this little book an array of rubies & gems that they may collect in their pockets as they move through life. What the bear learns is both where she belongs & how her knowledge can grow alongside the people (animals) she meets. I find the kindly reminder of all the wonders of the world, some of which can be found in our own backyard, a tender thought; the world is big but, around every corner, there is a friend, a good story to be told, a lesson to be learned, & life to be lived.
Thank you to Edelweiss+, Jolly Fish Press, & Frances Tosdevin for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
A simply joyous advert for books, full of surprise if that phrase is all you know about this. Bear wants to explore the world, and does, armed with just one book, but what a book – it teaches her how to cure a crab’s claw, the sight of a lizard and a cold in a crocodile. But forever seeking a new environment is what benefits the bear the most – until the true consequences of that come to light in a way guaranteed to bring smiles. Lovely painterly artworks add to the merits of all pages here, and the simple truth of it is that this book, first out in the UK in 2021, should not have been left around for these publishers to find and resurrect it. It’s a story of interest and inquisitiveness, for interesting, interested and inquisitive young readers, and the final benefit is that it’s in verse. And not just any lumpen, poorly-rhymed verse, either – it takes on a most awkward-seeming “de-de-dit-de-der, de-de-dit-de-der” beat, and while I stumbled over that once or twice it is certainly there more often than not.
I know nothing about the creators here, from the pages I got to see, but neither could really have expected a greater calling card. Yes, the likes of I are obviously liable to over-mark a volume that proves the worth of reading and of books and exploration, but I didn’t see a fault in this, so five stars is the only natural response.
Bear loves her book, Bears Big Book of Being Wise, and carries it with her wherever she goes. Even though she loves her home, she can't help but to want more. As she travels, she meets new friends and even helps them with her handy book that has all kind of advice. But it's still not enough and feels like there's more adventure waiting for her.
THE BEAR AND HER BOOK is a children's book that celebrates a love for reading and adventure. I love how in the end, Bear gets a special reward for her travels. The plot incorporates the idea of wanderlust with soft, detailed illustrations. There are underlying themes of friendship with all of the animals that Bear helps. These days, everyone is searching for more and this book shows how there can be special things waiting for you with each adventure.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to children who love animals, reading, and adventure. It's a great story to teach children about the idea of wanderlust and how it's okay to follow your dream.
The Bear and Her Book is a beautiful idyllic picture book with a tremendous quest for self-fulfilment. This book embodies themes of friendship and kindness. The lyrical rhyming text is easy to read aloud and children will love joining in with the repeated phrase. I particularly liked the way Bear refers to her Bear's Big Book of Being Wise to help the different animals she meets on her journey to find her perfect place to be that satisfies her curiosity and her desire for adventure. There is a totally satisfying ending that will resonate with book lovers everywhere.
The superb comforting illustrations with their soft neutral colours create a calm, relaxing atmosphere that compliment the text. I like the way Bear’s Big Book of Being Wise stands out red against the gold, green and turquoise colour palette.
I recommend this book to teachers and parents. A treasure for any book shelf. A joy to read.
This is *such* a beautiful book - at so many levels. I want to just say: Go buy it. Right now. No, seriously!
This is a story of a bear who wants to see the whole world. And, armed with her giant bear book of wisdom, she does just that, meeting and helping others along the way. The stop-sneeze tree was my favourite example of this.
The rhyming text is very well-done, and I particularly liked the refrain - which sums up the attitude to life which more of us should have and live by.
The punchline made me smile, along with the knowledge that the bear, like all of us, had finally found a perfect home for herself.
The illustrations are gorgeous and complement the text perfectly. Please buy a copy for the child in your life, along with the copy that you are of course going to need to keep for yourself!
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review
The illustrations and texts were IMMACULATE! I was caught off-guard on the first page's illustration, it is so beautiful. And the texts accompaniment makes it better!
This story is about an inquisitive bear yearning to explore the world, looking for a place where she feels enough. For she thoughts that the world is a big place, and a bear must go where where it wants to be.
Apart from having immaculate illustrations, the writing styles are quite neat and witty, i love how the author makes the sentences raw, it makes the story more uplifting and fun. Man, I thought this might be an average read, but was I wrong? TOTALLY!
I highly recommend picking this book for a read aloud activities as it could appeal to toddlers interest, on top of motivating them to find what they crave in life (within toddler level of thinking).
I love books about books, so when I saw this book about a bear who loves her book, I had to read it to my grandkids. In this book, bear wants to see the world, but she can't go anywhere without her book. And what is the name of her book? Bear's Big Book of Being Wise It's a good thing Bear has this book, because along the way she met many animals that needed help and she found the answers in her book. I really liked the idea that she found the answers in her book. Of course I keep telling my grandkids to find the answers to their questions in books, not on the internet because anyone can put stuff on the internet. This is a cute story that along with sharing the love of books, it shows bear helping others and exploring. The illustrations are realistic to a degree and add to the story. All three of the grandkids enjoyed this story.
The Bear and Her Book is a picture book that follows a curious bear who wants to see the world. She travels to different animal habitats and uses her book to help animals in each place.
I really liked the illustrations and story of this book. The bear’s travels to different types of habitats (jungle, desert, ocean) and meeting animals there will be good teaching for children learning about nature. I also loved that the bear found herself in love with reading at the end of the book.
What I didn’t appreciate was the way that the author couldn’t decide on a consistent rhyme scheme, or if they wanted to rhyme words at all. Thus, as a read-aloud the words just don’t flow nicely.
This picture book would be best for children between ages 4-7.
Sometimes, no matter how much you love your home, you want to see what else is out there. Bear can't help her wanderlust - she wants to see the sea, the desert, the jungle. There's so much to see in this big world, and she knows somewhere is the perfect place for a bear like her. Along the way she meets several critters in need of kindness and helpful solutions. Thankfully, Bear has a copy of Bear's Big Book to Being Wise to assist her on her journey.
Tosdevin and O'Conner have done a wonderful job with this delightful tale about kindness, knowledge, and adventure. The illustrations are lovely, the rhyming is perfection, and the characters are all lovable. Special thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book. The Bear and Her Book is out now.
Thank you so much Netgalley,Frances Tosdevun and Sophia O'Connor for the opportunity to read The Bear and her book.
I enjoyed that rhythm like narrative throughout the book and beautiful illustrations. This story was about a lovely Bear that was trying to discover where she belonged in the world. On her journey she used her book to help those in need that she encountered. Even though each time she was able to accomplish something helpful for another she wasn't completely satisfied. She finds herself finally discoving what truly makes her happy and identify her place in society.
The Bear and her Book will be available for purchase on November 7, 2023; don't miss out.

She travels far and wide meeting new friends along the way until she finally discovers the perfect place where she is meant to be. This is perfect for all those book loving families looking for a little adventure. The heartwarming tale along with beautiful illustrations takes us on a journey together to discover what is meant to be. Your family will adore this book, we sure did. Enjoy this adventure together.
Thank you so much NetGalley for the opportunity to review The Bear and Her Book by Frances Tosdevin for my honest feedback. I found this to be an adorable and beautifully illustrated book. It is such a perfect way to introduce kids to the wonders of reading and helping others along their way. I loved the bear and her special prize: Her Bear’s Big Book of Being Wise. To those she encountered on her way, what a helper she was to them on that day. “The world is big and there’s much to see, and a bear must go where she wants to be.” No matter how she traveled, whether by land or sea, she found her special place to be, with more books to read.
First sentence: A bear marched out on a moonlight night. Her fur was thick, and her eyes were bright. She sniffed the air, and she licked a paw-- she loved her home, but she wanted more...
Premise/plot: Bear wants MORE so she sets out to see the world one adventure at a time. She takes along with her a book BEAR'S BIG BOOK OF BEING WISE. She uses the book throughout as she meets others and encounters various situations. Will Bear ever settle down?
My thoughts: I liked this one. Bear loves books and living life to the fullest. Most of the book is about her world adventures, but, that's not quite how it ends. I liked that it includes both kinds of adventures--real world and bookish.
I loved the illustrations in the Bear and Her Book, there was a lot of beautiful detail on each page and wonderful use of color and light. The story rhymes for the most part, giving it a sing-song quality when read out loud. I like that there is a repeating phrase "The world is big, and there's much to see, and a bear must go where she wants to be" announces each travel transition as the bear explores the world. She totes around her big book of bear wisdom until the very end where she discovers volume two and settles down in a book store! A sweet adventure story.
