Castles and Courtship

To Know Miss May

Rate this book
He's supposed to convince her to marry someone else. What happens if he falls for her instead?

Living on the small tidal island of St. Michael’s Mount, Miss Livvy May has the freedom to do as she wishes and go where she pleases, thriving in harmony with the Cornish seas. As much as she loves living on the Mount, however, there is one thing she wishes she could the fact that everyone wishes to know everything. In an effort to help, Livvy’s father encourages her to find a spouse off of the Mount, but the very thought of leaving her home is unbearable—even if that home includes people who constantly misjudge and misunderstand her. But such a matter is hardly important when she has her books to keep her company. After all, reading is far easier than acknowledging the secrets she is desperate to keep to herself. Secrets about her past, about her family, about her heart—and whom she holds inside of it.

Known as the Mount’s Charmer, August Moon has it all—a promising occupation as the castle’s undergardener, a family who loves him, friends who support him, and a community that adores him. The only thing that could make his life better? Finding a wife whose cheerful temperament and sense of adventure match his own. Such a thing is easier said than done, however, when his time is unexpectedly usurped by his supervisor, Mr. May, and a shocking August must help the unsociable Livvy May to find her place in Society or risk losing his place of work at the castle. Spending any amount of time with the woman will most assuredly be a waste of August’s time, but how can he willingly give up his position at the castle when he’s spent his whole life working to get there?

With no choice but to accept Mr. May’s demands, August is determined to make quick work of the situation. But assisting the woman proves more than difficult as she refuses to comply with Society’s standards, putting his job—and his future—at risk. Livvy can’t begin to understand why the man is suddenly paying attention to her, but she is determined to keep her secrets to herself, especially the ones that involve August. And yet, when a fraction of the true Livvy shines forth, both of them must decide if their futures are better left spent apart or if falling in love is worth the risk of everything changing—and not entirely for the better.

This is a clean, sweet, wholesome romance set in Cornwall during the Regency Era.

Deborah M. Hathaway graduated from Utah State University with a degree in English and Creative Writing. As a young girl, she devoured Jane Austen's novels while watching and re-watching every adaptation of Pride & Prejudice she could, entirely captured by all things Regency and romance.

Throughout her life, she wrote many short stories, poems, and essays, but it was not until after her marriage that she was finally able to complete her first romance novel, attributing the completion to her courtship with, and love of, her charming, English husband.

Deborah finds her inspiration for her novels in her everyday experiences with her husband and children and during her travels to the United Kingdom, where she draws on the beauty of the country in such places as Ireland, Yorkshire, and her beloved Cornwall.

From the very first page, I knew Livvy was a fellow bookworm and a character I would connect deeply with, and I wasn't wrong. Every single chapter started with a delightful quote and captured my attention and foretold of the chapter contents.

"Father didn't like her reading the day away. Even though he understood her love of a good novel, he far preferred her to socialize. She laughed to herself. As if she'd ever choose that over reading."

Right? Reading over almost everything else. An awkward encounter with her childhood crush leads to many fun and endearing conversations and situations.

August is dreamy and oh, so loyal. I love how he tries so hard to do the right thing, even when choices are impossible. Livvy loves her books, and escapes into them often, but it was a delight to watch her engage in things outside of her dream world, make friends, and fall in love.

Deborah Hathaway is an author who doesn't mess around with a good tale. I was transported to a beautiful tidal isle with flowers and gardens galore, all while completely enchanted by a story full of rich, dimensional characters, and a heartwarming plot. Finding resolution to life's hardships and discovering home is a central thread to this beautiful written tapestry.

Content: death of parent; mild romance

'who needed friends with real flesh and blood when she had friends fashioned from fiction? Katherine Minola. Elizabeth Bennet. Evelina Anville.'

Lavinia or Livvy for short is about to become one of the most relatable characters you've ever read if you are the bookish sort :)

Livvy prefers books to socializing in real life. She lives somewhat of a hermit life and who better to bring her out of her shell than the most charismatic man on the island!!! Get ready for August Moon! He is so sweet to Livvy and your heart will be melting into a puddle before this book is over!

"I don't e'en know who I be anymore."
"Then allow me to remind ye," he said softly.

I loved the twists and turns of this book. There was some major intrigue and suspense happening that I did not see coming, but these moments throughout kept me turning pages as fast as I could! I felt a broad range of emotions. Interest, relatability, adoration, swoon, outrage, despair, injustice, hope, love, friendship and so much more!

I also loved that this book gave some life lessons along the way. Any time I can be encouraged through reading to want to be a better person that speaks volumes of the author's talent!

"...ye always 'ave a choice." He looked back at her, eyes shimmering. "Everyone always 'as a choice."

Another hit from author Deborah M Hathaway! She proves to me book after book why she is an auto -buy author for me!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content/Trigger: death of a parent, mild suspense, kissing.

Deborah M. Hathaway has written a sweet and gentle book that I didn't want to set aside or end. I adore this book. I adore the character of Miss Livvy May. She may be fictional but if she were real, we would be kindred spirits. She's charming and sweet and forgiving and caring and loving and so much more. But one part of her that I really adored was her love of reading and literature. Her ability to find learning and lessons from the novels and books she read. She's a gentle character who has some hard things from her past. Things that caused her to withdraw and remove herself from friends and others who live on the Mount with her. She's seen as different because of what she's done to survive and trying to find joy in her life and existence.

Enter August Moon. Her neighbor. Her childhood crush. Someone she plans to avoid and doesn't think she'll have any problems in doing so. Until she inadvertently needs help from him in her attempt to stay hidden from him. Hahaha! It was such a cute and funny meet cute (since they haven't seen each other in several years).

There is so much that happens between these two. I'm just going to leave it at that. Because it is far better discovered through the reading of their story than through me telling you my thoughts and opinions about it. But be warned, there are lots of emotions involved throughout their story. But I think you'll be cheering for them and loving their goodness and heartaches as I was.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to read it. You might be like me, not wanting to do anything else until you'd enjoyed every last page of this story. And you'll probably be left hoping for more!

Content: Clean. No language or anything more than a few kisses.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Such a unique setting! I loved the moody vibe of the island and Livvy's appreciation of all its seasons. There's an element of unrequited love here, until circumstances change and August takes notice of Livvy. There's something irresistible about August, and it's so sweet that he finds Livvy irresistible! Social and family dynamics make their budding friendship and romance complicated, but the author weaves in beautiful moments for them to share their hearts with each other. For fans of Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, this book has a similar quality of delicious anticipation and romantic tension, even though the stories are very different... but then again, there are subtle parallels when I look close enough. Highly recommend!

Such a great read! @authordeborahmhathaway has some of the most immersive regency stories and I’m so thankful I got to read her new release

Here’s what I loved about this book:
• the Cornwall setting was a
dream
• a quiet bookworm
• a kind gardener
• forbidden romance
• pining

This story transported me to Cornwall and I wasn’t ready to leave. August and Lavinia were such endearing characters and I desperately had to know how their love story would end.

Livvy May would rather read than socialize, much to the dismay of her father. When she does socialize her father admonishes her to keep her talk of books to a minimum which was hard because the usual topics discussed in society--fashion, the weather, etc--bored her.

Enter August Moon, Livvy's childhood crush and neighbor, who's returning back to their small community after being away for six years. They have the best meet-cute while Livvy tries to avoid him. I couldn't stop smiling while reading it.

A book who's main character is a bookworm? Yes please! Livvy is someone so many of us book lovers can relate to. "There were worse things for a woman to obsess over than books." I thought August was so good for Livvy and I loved when they were together. I also loved how August's mother treated Livvy, loaning her books, asking her about the books she'd read. She was the mother-figure Livvy needed in her life after her own mother's death.

August and Livvy have quite the journey to love. Besides admitting their feelings to themselves and to each other, they have people around them causing things to be more difficult. I was waiting for everything to come to a head and all the secrets to be revealed so these two could finally be together. They'll have quite the story to pass down to their children and grandchildren.

I love that the author has an epilogue and you'll want to read the author notes at the end. It gives some insight on how the story came about, the quotations used at the beginning of each chapter, and more!

Hathaway delivers an emotional historical romance novel unlike any other I have read. She transports the reader to Michael’s Mount and all of its beauty. I need to travel there and see it for myself! Livvy is my absolute favorite character; she loves to read and she is herself despite others thinking she is odd. Livvy is my spirit animal. She loves books over everything and while she doesn’t want to care what others think, deep down she does. I could really relate to that part of her.

August is sweet, kind, and loyal through and through. This forbidden romance kept me page turning and the depth of their situation had me wondering how everything would turn out. Hathaway writes two romances in one and I enjoyed the other romance story too even though it wasn’t the forerunner of the story. The journey that Livvy goes on is a roller coaster of ups and downs and Hathaway brings the reader along for every part of the ride. A beautiful and captivating story, To Know Miss May is one story you do not want to miss! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The author can construct a decent plot but that’s about all she accomplished. On kindle this novel weighs in at 440 pages when it needs only 200 or fewer to tell the story. So to begin with, this is slow, verbose, boring narrative. Then the secrets were less interesting for the repetitions of their portentousness and snail’s pace of revealing the obvious secrets. The conversations are occasionally mildly humorous but more often wooden.
The characters are not believable enough for me and their lives aren’t realistic for supposed menial working class people.
The heroine did not attract me at all, despite the author taking many long pages to explain her fine qualities and her plight. For example, Lavinia May, our heroine, is never described as doing household chores! She reads, wanders around, rarely picks up a needle, hides herself to point of idiocy, and visits her only 2 friends. That is pretty much her described life. But a woman or girl who is the daughter of a gardener, even a head gardener, is in the lower blue collar working class, and cannot afford to lead such an idle life. She’d be working alongside a maid and cook or or doing the duties of the cook in such a small household of the 2 Mays. Her father couldn’t make ends meet if she didn’t do household necessities. At least a good part of each day would be spent cleaning, preparing and preserving food, taking care of laundry, sewing and mending, even with the stated maid of all work and a cook. And for only 2 plus maid, Livvie ought to do the cooking!
Lavinia is also described as a moral, sensitive person but in truth she would be a woman without conscience or morals to be in an indolent position and yet is never described as doing any voluntary help for the poorest neighbors, anyone sick or in distress, families with new babies, her church, etc. She comes across as extremely self absorbed, as a cold, negative sort of hermit who doesn’t contribute to any community good.
The hero, August Moon, is also not credible. His family has inherited a fortune that could and should allow him to buy a piece of land to garden upon and farm upon as he chooses rather than tremble in dread of losing what is in truth a very poorly paid under gardener job. Not believable.
The book is highly rated but I found it barely tolerable. The author needs to cut down her verbiage; she’s not a Charles Dickens who’s manages to encompass many more believable and fascinating works yet written more sparingly. The author needs to develop her characters more realistically, who are appropriate to their culture and socio-economic positions. The book feels like she’s done her research well about the physical place, but not any research about the people and culture of the time period she has chosen for her novel.

Oh my goodness! All the stars! All the heart eyes! I love this this book to the Moon and back (yes that is a cheesy pun to the swoony male character). I enjoyed every second. I related so much with Livvy May and her introvert ways. And August Moon was just dreamy. He doesn’t see her as odd like everyone else does. Right off the bat he wants to know her better. Livvy’s Father wants her to make friends and marry someone away from their home and he gets August to reluctantly help. This leads to some conflict later on. The way that August brings out the best in Livvy is so endearing. And the dialect was so well written! I felt immersed in a Cornish world. This has to be one of my favorite reads this year!

This book was so heartwarming. I connected so well with the FMC and her love of reading and wanting her own little bubble. She was ridiculed and made fun of, but never changed her love of reading and wanting to escape reality. The MMC was incredibly sweet and understanding. ❤️ Their love for each other was beautiful. I definitely recommend this book/author! 5 stars!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

To know Miss May is a romance, of cource, but it is so very much more. It is also a study in how different persons handle difficulties and how we choose how to respond to them not only impact our own mind and happiness, but also our relationships and other persons' lives.

I love a story where the main couple know their feelings for each other through out the book but external things dictate how they can act. August Moon and Livvy May are such very likable characters and you root for them from the first page, but there are other characters not so likable. But in the end, are we too judge those weaker, who doesn't know how to handle themselves or should we pity them? And even likable persons sometimes act in ways we would not want them to as life and it's impact on them make them choose, as we see it, poorly.

Deborah M Hathaway has this magical way of telling a story that makes every single page a delight and fills you with all the feelings and she has done it again with this wonderful story that takes place at this unique and in itself magical island called St Michael's Mount. And though being part of the Castles & courtship series, it has it's own twist as it is set not in the castle but around it and the people being not of the upper classes but those working for the so called nobleman. The story and the much earlier event that so very much impacted the people, slowly reviels itself to us in the most intriguing way that keeps you turning the pages until the very end. This beautiful story can get nothing but five stars.

To be completely honest, I sincerely love this book but at first, I did not. It was a little difficult for me to get into this style of dialogue. The author's writing style was beautiful but the dialogue was hard for me to get past. Even though I began to enjoy reading it, it at first felt like it was dragging on (and it is a little bit of a longer read) and I had to force myself to read it to make any progress. I'm not sure completely when it hit, but I got used to the style and I fell in love. The beautiful backdrop and the beautiful, complex characters were so wonderfully written. It was such a sweet story. August and Livvy were great characters and their developing love story was so incredibly adorable and meaningful. I loved Livvy and connected with her well. I loved her personality and her love of books. Speaking of, I love that each chapter was led with a quotation from a great price of literature, some from books that Livvy was reading or had read. Ah, I can't wait to read this again!

Tortured

I came really close to giving it a 3. I liked it until the last third of the book. I never could stand soap operas where the people wouldn't let the other finish speaking so that a misunderstanding could continue. Others may like that for the build-up to the happily ever after. I do not. I came really close to just not finishing because I don't like to feel lousy for so long. Other people enjoy crying, I do not. I don't care if there is happiness in the end.

Oh this was so good. Livvy is the sweetest, most genuine character. I loved watching August fall for her. So much pain and hurt was endured here, but it ended in a believable and at the same time happy way. In the regency romances I’ve given 5 stars to this is a stand out.

I sat on a 10 hour flight and, apart from stopping to eat and have a short nap, I read this beautiful book. I love August, Livvy and The Mount. Not in any particular order. The way the characters’ speech was written was so clever and authentic. ♥️ 4.5.

I may try to finish this later because this is one I really wanted to read for quite awhile. I am DNFing at chapter 21 because I just can’t with Livvy’s father right now. Maybe in a different mood this story will hit better but for now I just can’t.

DNF. Ms. Hathaway writes well, but I stopped at Chapter 16 realizing I was not invested in the story at all. It would work better for a young adult audience, maybe. Though the location was original, it seemed like I have read this story in many forms. A young woman not understood by others, too insecure to believe hero would be interested in her. I stopped reading when I realized the author was setting us for all the future misunderstandings they would need to overcome and realized I didn't care.

I was confused as to what time period this book was set in.

The first chapter mentioned club sandwiches , and treacle tarts. It made me think it was a modern story. I am sorry to say, I did not continue to read the book.

DNF! I gave up about 100 pages in. Boring characters. Boring romance. I hardly ever give up on a book, but I could not put myself through this disaster.

There is so much to love in this sweet story- the characters are so real, the beautiful island of St Michael's Mount sounds like an awesome place to live. I love that Deborah Hathaway has returned us to another Cornish story which springs off of the pages of this book.

The main characters in this book: Miss Livvy May and August Moon grew up next door to each other. He was a few years older than she was so they didn't really know one another well. When August returned to the Mount after being away for five years, he was happy to be home and finally able to be a gardener at the Castle. When he first meets Livvy, he is immediately captured by her beauty and as time goes by, he will continue to find new things about her that delight him. The people on the Mount think she is odd because she doesn't socialize and she always has her face in a book. Those very things intrigue August as well as the many lists of favorite things she keeps.

August is pretending to be interested in his friend Emma so that she can secretly be meeting with his other friend Nicholas. His two friends' families have been enemies for years and would be against them being together. He cannot wait to be released from his promise to them, so that he can make his intentions known to Miss Livvy.

MIss Livvy uses to be very outgoing and had lots of friends on the Mount until she was about ten years old.
When her mother died and the curious people on the Mount kept questioning her and starting rumors, she withdrew into her books. Her father is determined to have her become a part of society and wants her to move off of the Mount. He sees how Livvy is able to interact with August and determines to use him to help Livvy get rid of her odd ways.

I loved the sweetness of Livvy and was saddened by the way that people looked down on her and gossiped about her. I didn't find anything really so odd about her and her love of reading. I guess I would be seen as odd too as I love to read. She just needed someone to believe in her as August did and to draw her out.
August was quite a special guy- spoken of by his friends and neighbors as the Mount's charmer. His desire was to see Livvy truly happy and living where she desired to live not where her father determined she should live.

This is such a full story and I love that it had an epilogue. It is part of a multi author series "Castles and Courtship" where each book is a stand alone story.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Read it for the:
- Sweet / Slow burn Romance
- Social Aneixty representation
- Well Written insecurities
- “It’s always been you” vibe
- Character growth
- Cornish setting

Content: past death of a parent, bullying
Romance: Sweet, Kissing only
Final rating: 5/5

Deborah Hathaway creates another beautifully immersive story, with heart, realistic conflict, and romance.

There were so many things I loved about this book. But among them, all I would have to say, are the main characters, Livvy May and August Moon are my favorites. Equally parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, Livvy and August’s journey and growth were incredibly written.

I loved that Livvy’s struggle with being social and trying to make her father proud was relatable. Her reasons as to why she wanted to make him proud were slowly revealed throughout the story, and it was a testament to the kindness and resilience of her character. She was a strong character, she knew her mind and what she enjoyed and disliked-only she was silent and struggled to speak up. It was incredible to see how much I grew to love her along with the rest of the cast. Her inner dialogue was so fun to read! The fact that she loved August for years, added to their relationship and tension. She might have fallen first, but August fell harder.

August was a joy to read, and a swoon-worthy lead in how noble he was. I loved that he was Livvy’s opposite as a popular resident on their island with a natural charm. Yet, he saw in her what no one else seemly did and helped her discover that the things that made her odd, were the things that shaped her. His love and yearning for her were beautiful and had me teary-eyed as his honorable character was one of the reasons that prevented them from being together. Honestly, the pinning and angst added so much depth to their romance, I loved it. Slow burn indeed.

The insecurities represented in this story were skillfully done. Not only for Livvy but for her father. The plot and subplots were all entertaining and played off of each other to deliver a well-rounded read. The quality of the writing was immersive and effective in making me invested in the lives of the characters.

I just really loved this book and recommend it.

Livvy May is known to all as the hermit of the Mount. Her love for reading and desire to avoid socializing at all cost means everyone living on St. Michael's Mount has labeled her as odd, including her father. That label is thoroughly confirmed when she's caught tangled in the bushes, book in hand, by the man she's loved for over a decade. But even August Moon's kind nature and charming smile won't pull her from her shell...or will it?

August has recently returned to the Mount to take a position as an undergardener at the castle, but the last thing he expected to find among the plants was Miss May. Despite having been her neighbor for most of his life, he knows very little about the woman, and while he's aware of the rumors circulating about the woman, he finds himself instantly intrigued. Perhaps it's time he come to truly know Miss May.

After a dinner party, August and Livvy share a conversation that results in an easy friendship, but that friendship is put to the test when Livvy's father asks August to befriend his daughter and encourage her to leave the Mount once and for all. August refuses the tasks, but when Mr. May's desperation leads to threats that place his future—and the future of those he cares about—at risk, he has no choice but to comply. As Livvy begins to open up with the new friendship, both of their hearts become engaged. But secrets are a risky business, and it will take complete trust to keep both their hearts from breaking.

WHAT AN EMOTIONAL RIDE. This book was SO good. Livvy and August are the most adorable couple ever. Their chemistry was instantaneous, and boy was I rooting for them. Deborah has a knack for making cry, and this was no exception. (Seriously, like 20 times. The castle tour scene? Ugggh I probably looked like a raccoon.) The character growth was absolutely perfect for both MCs and the premise of this story was BEAUTIFUL. I loved Livvy and found her relatable. I think we all need to be reminded that its ok to be who we are, no matter the judgments of others. And August certainly stood up to his nickname as Charmer of the Mount. That man had my smiling (and crying!) soooo much. An absolutely excellent and highly recommended read.

PS. Ophelia's making up words, though XD I died laughing. For reals.

Miss Lavinia “Livvy” May is a book lover and hermit. She would rather read and live on the Mount than do anything else. She doesn’t socialize, much to her father’s disapproval. However, August Moon, her childhood crush, returns to the Mount. He invites her to his home for a social event and suddenly she wants to socialize. It’s always been hard for her to socialize after the death of her mother and the rumors about it. August Moon is intrigued by Livvy. Who is this adorable woman? He would like to know. However, he has promised his friends Emma and Nicholas to feign an attachment to Emma temporarily because Nicholas and Emma want to be together but can’t in a typical Romeo and Juliet way. This buys them more time. August wants to be with Livvy but has to be careful. Another obstacle is thrown into the mix when Livvy’s father finds out about Nicholas and Emma’s relationship and uses that to get August to do his bidding. Which is, befriending Livvy, and making her socialize more and getting her to leave the Mount. He reluctantly agrees but there is nothing fake about his relationship with Livvy.

This story is so cute! Livvy is such a bookworm. She likes reading more than socializing but realizes that gets lonely. She is so adorable! I love how she has favorite lists for everything! Her favorite weather, books, colors, flowers etc. August finds it adorable as well. I loved how Livvy learns how to open up and socialize more. August is such a kind soul and I felt bad for him being used by Livvys father. He still tries his best to do right by Livvy and his friends. I loved the humor in this story! Both Livvy and August have a great sense of humor. Overall I really enjoyed this story, the writing was great and it is a clean read! Definitely recommend!

All the stars for this lovely romance! From the start, it was a book lovers dream with quotes at the beginning of each chapter from beloved classic books. I found a kindred spirit in Lavinia “Livvy” May. Her delight for reading and desire to share her books with others completely drew me in. The romance was amazing and the charming location was so well described that it made me want to visit. Definitely another winner and new favorite from Deborah M. Hathaway!

Livvy went through some difficult hardships at a young age which caused her to retreat into her book world. She struggles between her desire to find friends and fear of rejection. Those who truly appreciate her intelligence and quick wit find her delightful, but others including her own father find her an oddity and constantly admonish her not to discuss her books.

When August Moon comes home after several years, Livvy finds her crush on him has not diminished. She admires the outgoing, friendly, kind man and his love of plants and the outdoors. Their meet cute had me smiling and from there I was anticipating each meeting.

August is definitely a favorite swoonworthy hero! He’s loyal, thoughtful, and funny. His charming teasing is adorable. I loved it when he play acts with Livvy while discussing books and challenges her to grow. I also loved it when they visit the gardens at night and those sizzling, tender kisses. But, August is caught in a tangled web that will test his new found love and friendship with Livvy.

The suspense, romance, and angst near the end had me quickly turning the pages. Don’t skip the author’s note where she offers a fantastic explanation for her story choices. It’s a swoony, endearing romance that I can’t wait to read again. I received a complimentary copy from the author but also purchased the book through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

Odd is Beautiful
I was absolutely charmed by this story and the world of St. Michael’s Mount. August and Livvy couldn’t be more night and day on the surface, but beneath they both share a love of the Mount, honesty, and their friendship. August doesn’t have to hide his true self, whereas Livvy feels like she must hide to survive, having been teased practically her entire life for being “odd” which is actually her authentic self. So, when she finds the one that accepts her for who she is, she can’t let go, and who can blame her!

When I first started reading the English accents in the dialogue threw me a bit, but it grew on me, and I found myself hearing the authentic English twang in my mind clear as day, which added to the charm. I really appreciated the fact that despite being teased mercilessly that Livvy likes, and is secure in, who she is. So many times when I read a story from the regency era that has a heroine that goes against the norm, I see said heroine shy away from being herself around others. Not Livvy! She is unapologetic about being odd, and I am here for it! This is something I definitely need to heed, so thank you Livvy for the inspiration.

There are moments of pure romance that had me all swoony and other moments with such heart, showing the full range of emotions entailed within these pages. There is also a sliver of mystery surrounding Livvy’s mother’s death, this question looming throughout the story that adds the perfect amount of tension.

All in all, I loved this story! The flow is so natural, the characters are lovable, and the Mount is quite charming. This read has everything you could want in a clean romance and more!

The way the conflict was handled pretty much ruined what could otherwise have been a good story.

As the book pointed out repeatedly that one always has a choice. And the H and h chose to be self-pitying, annoying dimwits.

I was so exhausted with Livvy for entertaining her abominable father’s demands over choosing August’s love. Yes, she finally opened her eyes and did the right thing, but she took an infuriating amount of time to do that. Honestly, the flimsiness of the conflict made it difficult for me to sympathize with Livvy’s reasonings to break her ties with August. She prolonged her misery by whining about being tricked and paying attention to rumors instead of August’s pleas that they could face anything together.

I was frustrated by August’s “honorable” half-truths. He didn’t even do anything her father ordered, except for nudging her to join the assembly and sending a few men her way for the dance. He would have befriended her anyway, and yet he acted as if he danced to the father’s tune. I admired that he has such a strong moral compass and values honesty and transparency in his relationships. But then be completely honest and present all the facts when confessing. Why withhold half the truth - truth about her father’s threats, truth about paying heed to only a few things her father demanded?

I enjoyed the books that I have read by this author and I thought I would love this one too. So it was very disappointing when I had to force myself to finish the book and found myself falling out of love with the main characters.

Miss Livvy May is described by the locals as odd and hermit-like. After her mother died at such a young age, she withdrew from society and spent a lot of time in her books, disappearing from the world in her grief-stricken state. She has secretly been in love with August Moon, who lives next door. But he is a few years older than she is and seems never to have noticed her before.

When circumstances bring the two face to face, August sees Livvy in a different way. Her oddities are endearing and she is able to converse with him and spend time with him where he begins to see who she really is and not what the rumor mill has convinced society that she is.

When Livvy's father, who is also August's boss, convinces and then threatens August to convince Livvy that she needs to leave her home and move to the mainland and away from the home she dearly loves, August feels trapped. He hates lying to her but there are other things at stake. Will his secret destroy what he has come to cherish with Livvy? Will she be lost to him forever? You'll just have to read and find out.

This was a sweet, clean story of accepting people for who they really are and not letting society dictate who we become but being willing to live as you truly are. There is a happy ending to this story which I dearly love.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

Ms. Hathaway always knows how to maker her readers want to go to Cornwall. It always sounds so beautiful. It took me a while to really get into the story though. I enjoyed the last half better than the first. The story is paced in a more laid back way. It didn't feel overly slow but is definitely not a fast pace story. My biggest problem is just a personal preference thing but I don't enjoy reading accents that much. That may have contributed to my being so slow to dive into the story. Maybe I'd like it better in an audiobook? I don't know.

I was so annoyed by Livvy's father. She was far more patient and forgiving that I would have been I'm afraid. He had been hurt and was burdened but being the adult he needed to give more to his child than he was willing to do. Sadly he had blinders on that only allowed him to see his daughter through a specific lens rather than reality.

I really liked August and of course felt sorry for the horrible position in which he was placed. I did root for August and Livvy to find their happily ever after. And also one for their friends. I loved that Livvy had quietly loved August from a distance for so many years. And I loved it when his eyes were finally opened to her. I also loved that in the end Livvy was able to see her situation more clearly to understand those around her and see how she played in to their behavior. And I loved the epilogue.

First off, I LOVED this book! Deborah Hathaway is one of my faves and she never fails to write a beautiful story with realistic characters, and To Know Miss May was no exception.

Without getting into the nitty-gritty details of the story, for me this book is a reminder to speak kindly to yourself. The voices that we choose to give power to are the ones we let shape us and control our mood. If you constantly repeat negative words in your head about yourself, everything that happens will only prove your own point to yourself more, because we only look for evidence that we think supports our beliefs or mindset. Example- If I constantly say to myself I’m not a good enough mom, everything that happens will only convince me of that more, like crying babies, undone chores, messy house, etc. Livvy looks for evidence that she is odd and a disappointment to others because she gives power to that voice in her head, but she’s got it all wrong!

How you talk to yourself matters. Surround yourself with people who build you up and appreciate you rather than tear you down and criticize you. Everyone is dealing with their own hurts and insecurities (like Livvy’s dad), so remember to speak kindly to them too, and give them grace even when they don’t have any to spare.

Do yourself a favor and read this book, AND read the Author’s Note at the end- very entertaining and informative!

Goodness, what a lovely story this was! It was like a love letter to all readers and book lovers everywhere. Livvy is the Penultimate bookworm with her lists of favorite stories and her favorite places to read. August is the near direct opposite of her with his love of working with the land and ensuring beautiful things grow well. I loved their conversations and their banter - it was so perfect for their relationship. And their friendship blossoming into romance was just delightful. But, lest you think this story is all hearts and rainbows, you need to know that you will also experience some very different emotions as you reading. I also felt anger, betrayal, hurt, grief, and an irrational urge to shake the book since I couldn’t shake sense into the meanest characters. And I didn’t care that it was from pain and hurt that they lashed out, they should never have been so cruel. But, that works in favor of bringing everyone to the very best ending so I guess I’ll concede the necessity of that plot line….if I have to 😉 Highly recommend you get this book on your TBR because I know you will love it as I do.

I received a complimentary ARC of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
