Death follows New York City cop Eve Dallas everywhere - even on her honeymoon with Irish lover Roarke. When one of Roarke's employees is found dead, the post-mortem confirms suicide. An isolated case, or so Eve thinks.

But more suicides follow - strangers with nothing in common. The pathologist's report states each victim has an unexplained mark on their brain. Is this a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder? With the body count rising, Eve must delve into the world of virtual reality to hunt down a twisted killer. AMAZING!!! <3
Normally I'm not very much into Mystery/Crime books and when I first discovered this series I thought, HOLY SHIT there are more than 40 books in this series! Am I ready for this or should I say Am I crazy to start to read them? How will I finish them? UGH!!! But then I jumped right into the 1st book and BOOM! After I finish that book I thought WOW What a fucking amazing story is this!!! I absolutely loved the 1st book. Eve and Roarke really, really turned my world upside down. Their chemistry, their inside jokes are so, so freaking good. After the 1st book they became one of my favorite couples and this amazing series became one of my favorites too and I'm planning to finish this series in 2018! Wish me luck please! :D

And if you're still thinking whether you should start this series or not... Please just read this part (I know it's very long but trust me it will worth your time) and let Roarke make you swoon!!! :)

---------------

"I have something for you."
She eyed the velvet box with suspicion. "You don't have to get me presents. You know I don't want you to."
"Yes. It makes you uncomfortable and uneasy." He grinned. "Perhaps that's why I do it." He sat beside her on the floor, handed her the box. "Open it."
She imagined it would be jewelry. He seemed to thrive on giving her body decorations: diamonds, emeralds, ropes of gold that left her stunned and feeling awkward. But when she opened it, she saw only a simple white blossom.
"It's a flower?"
"From your wedding bouquet. I had it treated."
"A petunia." She found herself sentimentally teary-eyed as she picked it out of the box. Simple, basic, ordinary, one that might grow in any garden. The petals felt soft, dewy, and fresh.
"It's a new process one of my companies has been working on. It preserves without changing the basic texture. I wanted you to have it." He closed a hand over hers. "I wanted both of us to have it, so we could be reminded that some things last."

She raised her eyes to his. They had both come from misery, she thought, and survived it. They had been drawn together through violence and tragedy, and had overcome it. They walked different paths and had found a mutual route.
Some things last, she thought. Some ordinary things. Like love.

...and ladies & gentlemen! That's Roarke! :)

This is the fourth book in the series, and now I only have 44 more books to go! Good thing Eve is interesting and Roarke is kind of hot. Well, except in this book he does unwillingly do one absolutely terrible thing (major spoiler!)

Anyways! This was my favorite installment so far. You know, out of all 4 I have read haha. I love these secondary characters, I love E&R, and I love the 'future' gadgets that are already outdated now (a laser fax machine! ha!). I can't wait to read the next 44 books ;)

“I'm sorry. It's hard for me. I do love you," she said quietly. "Sometimes it scares me because you're the first. And the only"
He held her there until he was sure he could speak, then eased her back, looked into her eyes "You've changed my life. Become my life." He touched his lips to hers, let the kiss deepen slowly, silkily. "I need you”

I fucking love Roarke.

“She raised her eyes to his. They had both come from misery, she thought, and survived it. They had been drawn together through violence and tragedy, and had overcome it. They walked different paths and had found a mutual route.

Some things last, she thought. Some ordinary things. Like love.”

“He linked his fingers with hers. And because he had used it when he'd hurt her, he balanced that out by using it now. "A ghrá.”

"Huh?" A line appeared between her brows. "Is that Gaelic again?"

"Yes." He brought their joined fingers to his lips. "Love. My love.”

My dad used that expression .... "a ghrá" - He would ask ... "are you alright a ghrá?"

“He turned her into his arms as they stepped into the studio, ran his hands over her hips. "I missed you. I miss spending large quantities of time with you."

She felt the heat kindle between her thighs, hotter, lustier than the moment called for. Her breasts tingled with it. "I missed you, too. Why don't we figure out how to cut the evening short, go home, and fuck like rabbits?"

He was hard as iron. As he leaned down to nip at her ear, he found himself struggling not to tug at her clothes. "Good thought. Christ, I want you.”

Detective Eve Dallas and billionaire Roarke are married now, but the honeymoon is short lived. People are dying and Eve is convinced that their deaths aren’t the accident they initially appear to be. As always, this series so, SO works for me because the writing is very tight—sticking closely with a no nonsense police procedural, but also allowing just enough character development as the series develops that I’m quite attached to Eve, Roarke, Peabody, Mavis and all the regulars. There’s an interesting mystery to solve in each one. And Eve with her smart talk and grit is a kick butt main character I can’t read enough of.

Rapture in Death by J.D. Robb is the fourth book in the In Death series and oh my goodness, what a cracking series this is turning out to be. I had been planning to start this series for a while now and I finally got to do it this year and I'm so glad I did.

How is it that three strangers who all seem to have nothing in common except suicide have no clear reason to end their lives. Lieutenant Eve Dallas has a feeling there is more to this case and she is determined to find out what, but will her instincts be correct or could she be following signs that lead her nowhere?

Another gripping intense story that will keep you guessing right to the end. A fabulous mystery, thriller, suspense, oh and let’s not forget the romance or should I say hot, steamy romance scenes between married couple Eve and Roarke 😍. Highly recommended.

Another flawless read by J.D.Robb aka Nora Roberts. The writing is superb, the world is perfection (though I tend to think of it as an alternate reality instead of in the future) and the characters are amazing. Literally kicking myself for not picking this series up sooner.

P.S. If Eve and Roarke aren't still together by book 42 I'm so pitching a hissy fit to end all fits!

Suspense 5 stars / Romance 3 stars

I probably sound like a broken record, but the sharp brilliant mind of Eve (= author) impresses and excites me.

I’m in love with Eve’s mind.
Nora Roberts’s true fan forever!

Mystery and crime in this instalment was captivating: behavioural pattern, stimulating of human brain – incredible deep and clever written. I’m addicted.
I made a joke in my 1st review how many books this series has, now I mourn (in advance) that there could never be enough.

The romance.
As a minority in my non-sympathy for Roarke, I mentioned some things that bothered me.
Not that I feel a need to explain myself; and it’s a bit uncomfortable to complain about this author’s work; but I have my opinion and I always add safety/romance details to all my reviews, I owe it to my dearest friends.

I read 4 books and I met 3 ex-lovers of Roarke.
I’m not a Victorian virgin or/and prude and I’m totally fine that the man had his past. Common, no one demands from a single good-looking powerful man to live like a monk. It’s fine, even great.

But when the author writes her amazing strong female character with a touch of vulnerability and tortured past, I don’t particularly like, when they rub his flawless beautiful ex-lovers in her/mine face.

Eve is not flawless beautiful, their words not mine, but she is an extremely attractive high intelligent and strong woman. These qualities mean more than alabaster skin and big boobs to me.
Eve is one of the most beautiful women in my eyes.

I love my heroines, female character is always my priority and I’m always on her side. There are exceptions, of course, but I read (and I never hid it) mostly for the female protagonists. Handsome cocky (in both meanings), rich and and and men don’t impress me much.

I admire female strength, because this strength is not fictional.

(My recent review on this matter brought a comment from one user about me being a lesbian. My answer was – unfortunately no.)

I don’t doubt Roarker’s love to Eve. But there is none to little insight in his thoughts.

Sue me, but as a 36 years old woman, I don’t always believe what a man says.

Roarker’s actions speak for his love and devotion, but his colourful past and lack of good taste in women, who warmed his bed, (it’s not me being a bitch, it’s a fact – 2 were killed and portrayed as not especially honourable women and 1 was a villain) keep me from loving him.

And I don’t refer to the violence scene in this book (when his brain was “stimulated” to rape Eve – this scene wasn’t brutal and he was more than sorry afterwards), but some minor details like her asking if there are any beautiful woman he didn’t have sex with, and him saying no;
and above all the comments from many side characters how such an attractive powerful and blah blah blah man got himself not a sophisticated woman.

Cut this BS, fellas!

The true question is, IMO,

how such an average man got so lucky to have this amazing incredible intelligent strong and fascinating woman?

I guess my last line summarizes my feelings.

P.S. I'm not a man hater! *lol*
But definitely not a “blind drooler” over male good looks/abs/big c*ck & Co. and I'm 100% not a men-pleaser.

I loved it, I loved it, I loved it!!!

I was afraid that the romance of the series would slow down now that Eve and Roarke are permanent, but that was sooooooo not the case!!!! If anything, there was an extra dynamic between them that was almost missing before. I suppose it mirrors real life in a way. Marriage is only the beginning of a crazy ass ride. There are higher highs and lower lows than you even knew existed.

“I'm sorry. It's Hard for me. I do love you," she said quietly. "Sometimes it scares me because you're the first. And the only"
He held her there until he was sure he could speak, then eased her back, looked into her eyes "You've chaged my life. Become my life." He touched his lips to hers, let the kiss deepen slowly, silkily. "I need you”

To be honest, the suspenseful part of the In Death books til now is such a background part of each story. I'm more fascinated with the individuals like Eve and Roarke, Mavis, Peabody, Feeney (sp?). Roberts writing simply shines when it comes to her characterization and the heart that she instills in her characters. Who would have thought that the wild, crazy, erratic Mavis would be the perfect best friend to the stolid, staid workaholic that is Eve?

Simply put, the magic is not only within the continuing pages of a series that has dozens of books yet to come, but it's getting better and better. And I'm trusting in Roberts that it will continue to do so. This book rocked!!

As usual, these books are so exciting! Makes me want to stay away from video games. Lol. The character development is wonderful. We see more of my favorite house in 'book world'. The ball room has a retractable roof. The 'lagoon pool' has jets like a hot tub. Cool!!

I really love the characters in this series. I liked this one, but it didn’t engross me quite as much as the last couple I’ve read. I think I was disappointed in the mystery as it didn’t grip quite the same and I thought the culprit was pretty easy to figure out. That being said all of my favorite side characters were present and their regular wonderful selves. Dallas can’t help who she is and she can’t help responding to an apparent suicide at the end of her honeymoon despite being off world and definitely out of her jurisdiction. Upon returning to work she comes across a couple of other suicides but there is a strange anomaly in their brain scans which convinces her these deaths are connected and most definitely not suicide. I’m kind of glad I found this series so late into it, there is a long back list for me to leisurely get through.

Another set of murders in future-world (not Australia). This time it is in the form of people committing suicide after using a virtual reality program. Eve is on the case, so that means she will totally harass and chase down the wrong person for a while and then somehow get lucky and find the right one - usually after they try to kill her and confess their evil plans first. Still, I like these books. I've only guessed the killers early in two of the four books I've read so far. That's pretty impressive to me.

The purrfect crime.
(okay, I apologize for that)

New future things mentioned in this book that I want:

Air skates

Body-molding chair

Roarke.

Can someone get on this please?

Good series entry, but again I had the killer pegged partway into book. However, part of the fun of these books is the byplay between the characters. I'm sure I'll get to books 5 and further in 2017.

!4,5 stars!

This is just getting better and better. With each book we delve deeper and deeper into miasma of human nature. And also deeper into Eve's character. I love how she opens up more now. It's night and day compared to the first book, where she was cold and stoic and closed up like a turtle in her shell. Now she's more of a human being and it's all thanks to Roarke. God bless him!

The case of the week is a string of what looks like suicides. The first on rudely interrupting Eve and Roarke on their off-planet honeymoon. People are just so inconsiderate sometimes. Honestly. Any other cop would probably shrug and move on to the next case, but not Eve. When her gut tells her something is shifty in here, she pursues it like a dog does a bone, uncovering someone's sick game with a human brain. It's all fascinating really, and not that impossible. So, scary...

I wonder if they have it in purple

I wanna say one more thing before I go. PEABODY! Girl has the worst luck with men, but damn she's hilarious.

Over and out
April 18, 2019
Love Eve and Roarke but hate that the honeymoon had to be interrupted but the hot lawn scene was a great make-up for the interruption. :) Hated the bad memories that are haunting Eve. I hope she can get herself help and get through this but I know Roarke won't let her go through this alone. He's great for her and for me too. LOL

Re-Read April 17,2019 - 5 Roarke and Eve ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
love this series. Roarke and Eve are great together. The when he worries about her. How Eve feels so awkward towards him but also protective of he and her friends. Peabody is a hoot but also smart. Peabody will make a great partner for Eve. Though Eve lives with her nightmares of her past, Roarke gets his own nightmarish moment when Eves new investigation hits home but Roarke doesn’t take it sitting down. He's angry and has his small but intense moment with the accused. I love, love this series

Lieutenant Eve Dallas was off-planet with her new husband Roarke for the last few days of their honeymoon when Eve was called to a suicide as the only cop on the scene. But it was when they arrived back in New York and Eve was well and truly back in the job that first one, then another suicide hit the alarm bells for Eve. There was nothing to indicate these were anything other than self-termination, but Eve’s cop instincts were jangling…

Was it just paranoia on Eve’s part? Or was there something to the instincts which had never let her down in the past?

Rapture in Death is the 4th in the In Death series by J.D. Robb, and a re-read for me – and I loved it as much as the first time. Fast paced, full-on action, the interactions between Eve and Roarke are legendary. Eve’s constant discomfort is amusing; her comments dry – while her securing of Peabody as her aide in this episode cements the start of a great cop relationship. This is a highly recommendable series and I’m looking forward to Ceremony in Death, which is next up (while I wait for the upcoming new release!)

So many years since I read this and I had totally forgotten how brilliant it is! It all came back to me as I was reading that this was the book where I originally fell in love with the series. All the comedy between Peabody and Eve - J.D. Robb is SO good at writing dialogue. And all the love between Roarke and Eve - she is also SO good at writing romance:) The last few pages where Eve has that awful panic - tissues please! Oh and Feeney and Galahad and Mira and Mavis and everyone else.
So very, very good. And this is only number 4 in the series - still so much more goodness to come.......

Roarke and Eve remain a fab duo, and the pace of the story continues to be good. Whilst I did guess who the villain of the piece was early on, this book was still a good read.

I was really disappointed that I didn’t get to see the wedding between Roarke and Eve, as this book starts when the two are on their honeymoon, but other than that this was a enjoyable read

Hoping to get my hands on a few more books in the series, this year.

Eve in Rapture In Death is faced with a complicated puzzle that starts with a body in the resort she is spending part of her honeymoon!
As more deaths are ruled suicides and the their personality does not fit the option of self termination Eve is looking for connections and motives to those closest to the victims but seems not to get anywhere she has to consider the impossible...

In the meantime something occurs between Eve and Roarke that could cause them problems but it doesn't take them long to figure out what went wrong!

Friends and colleagues from previous books make also appearances!

Another great addition to the series!

I liked this one alright. It brought up some interesting concepts. However, it wasn't as appealing as the previous installments. I really didn't care for some of the mind games played on Eve and Roarke. Specifically at Mavis's party. I could have done without that scene. I did like Peabody's expanded role and the banter between her and Eve. Some light humor works well.
The basic synopsis is that three people commit suicide, but Eve thinks they were murdered. She is having a great deal of trouble proving the deaths were linked. Future technology may be partly responsible, and that may hurt Roarke.
Overall a B-/ C +

I didn't realize until I picked up the book that J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts, the uber-popular romance writer. Oops. The 'In Death' series is promoted as 'Romantic Suspense' genre. That's mainly marketing obfuscation; there isn't any more romance in this thriller than there is any other popular thriller. There are a few more scenes of hot sex than a typical thriller, and there's more action: fights, shootings, chases. The story is set in the 2050s, a future imagined to have flying cars and colonies, including luxury resorts, on other planets. Well, SciFi is always ridiculously optimistic about technology. Eve Dallas is a tough NY cop who's flying car's A/C is on the fritz. She witnesses the aftermath of two suicides where the deceased seemed unlikely to take their own life, and where the deceased was apparently delighted to die. Dallas finds this suspicious and investigates, uncovering a technological weapon wielded by a clever sociopath. A sharp thriller, a clever take on the future, and a fast, snappy read.

Starting off with a sexy pic of Roarke again...because I can.
DGandy_V_28Apr11_DH_b

RAPTURE IN DEATH is by far my favourite of the entire series and that’s quite a statement since I loved all the books leading up to this one. There was just something about this book that lured me in from the get-go. In this one, Eve Dallas is happy for a change. This is not to say that she was morbid and depressing in the previous books, but there’s this spark within her that I noticed right away. She’s a woman in love and it’s just so great to read how her relationship with Roarke grows with each passing book.

Lieutenant Dallas’s case this time involves a series of deaths that seem to be caused by self-termination. But upon closer inspection, Eve believes that another factor is causing these rich and relatively happy people to become suicide victims. As she explores various avenues and leads, she finds herself meeting an associate of Dr. Mira, a woman named Reeanna Ott. Dr. Ott is also a psychologist whose beliefs are that experiences do not shape people’s lives and that the fate of a person relies on who you are at birth. I loved this side of the story because psychology is my field of study. All that frontal lobe damage and psych talk was definitely my thing.

Then there’s Mavis and her gig with a new character named Jess. Jess sees potential in Mavis’s overall music career and he wants to be the man behind it. So Mavis, along with her beau, Leonardo and Jess put their heads together to make a demo for Mavis which premieres at a party that Roarke hosts. All in all, Robb crafts an amazing story. There is so much that goes on, but she manages to keep the pace moving.

And I haven’t even mentioned Roarke yet! Wow, there are so many scenes with Roarke in this book and it’s partially the reason why I loved this book so much! Eve and Roarke steam things up in this book! There is one particular scene that has topped my favourite scenes with Roarke and it’s the car/lawn scene that involves Eve putting the pedal to the metal, flashing lights, torn and ripped clothing and some bite marks. This scene alone is enough reason for you to start this series!

Here's a pic of sexy Roarke after this hawt sex scene...
david-gandy-vman-5

Another great thing about this book is PEABODY! I love her! Delia is becoming more and more prevalent in this series and I’m so excited about it! I love the idle banter between her and Eve. They’ve become such great friends. And Peabody cracks me up whenever her ovaries start taking over.

This part cracks me up:
“Roll up your tongue, Peabody,” Eve suggested, “before you step on it.”
“God. Holy God. He’s better in person. Don’t you just want to bite him?”
“Not particularly, but you go ahead.”
Catching herself, Peabody flushed to the roots of her hair. She shifted on her sturdy legs. This was, she reminded herself, her superior. “I admire his talent.”
“Peabody, you’re admiring his chest. It’s a pretty good one, so I can’t hold it against you.”
“I wish he would,” she murmured.

I can’t wait to read the next book! There are soo many reasons why you should start reading this series. I don’t think I could name them all. But perhaps this last picture of Roarke will persuade you.

TRIGGER WARNING: Rape

I'm glad I decided to listen to these books. I have the first dozen or so on audio already, so it's a nice way to pass the time. But this one had something missing that the others, so far, didn't. It also had some nice changes. Which leaves me a little baffled on how to rate it.

I enjoyed seeing Eve settle into her relationship with Roarke. Not just accepting her feelings, but coming to depend on him, knowing that he'll be there for her, and realizing that it's not even necessarily a compromise when it's with the person you love.

Roarke is still Roarke. That nearly perfect human being, utterly understanding, completely devoted. His backstory is given some more depth here, and you begin to see that he wasn't always the wonderful person that he is now. Not simply criminal activity, which I think that people brush aside fairly easily with Roarke, but something darker and deeper. And here's where my trigger warning is going to come in.

TRIGGER WARNING

The murders were a nice backstory in this book. It wasn't what took center stage for me, though the subliminal side-story did. I found that fascinating - until the closet. From there, I was just waiting for it to be over.

21 August 2014: $1.99 on Kindle - The first four books are on sale for $1.99 each.
