Every fire begins with a little heat–and in Slow Burn, bestselling author Julie Garwood provides the spark, skillfully blending pulse-pounding action, intense emotion, and characters with grit and heart. The result is an electrifying novel of romantic suspense that will have readers burning through the pages.

An unpretentious beauty who radiates kindness, Kate MacKenna doesn’t have a bad bone in her body–or an enemy in the world. So why are bombs igniting everywhere she goes? The first explosion brings her face-to-face with a handsome Charleston police detective. The second sends her into the arms of her best friend’s brother–a Boston cop who’s a little too reckless and way too charming for comfort. But Dylan Buchanan won’t let emotion prevent him from doing his job: Someone is trying to kill Kate, and Dylan is the only one standing between her and the monster who wants her dead.

My first Julie Garwood book and I quite enjoyed it. I think personally I would have liked more sexy time, the person behind the bombings was no big surprise and some bits were a bit of a drag.

Otherwise I'm interested enough to try the another Julie Garwood book. I think the hot cops are enough motivation for me to try more from this series :)

Over the past year, Kate McKenna and her sisters have had a hard time dealing with their mother's death. Kate was hoping that things would start getting better when she learns that the business she built from the ground up may be taken away from her. On top of that, Kate is nearly killed in an explosion while attending a reception at a friend's house. Kate makes a quick trip out of town to visit her best friend, Jordan Buchanan, who is having surgery. Later that night, a visit from Jordan's brother, Dylan, turns into a one-night stand. In the morning, Kate returns home only to be caught in another explosion, barely escaping with her life. Dylan follows her home. After hearing about the strange mishaps that keep happening to Kate, he isn't about to leave her side until he uncovers who wants her dead.

This is the fifth book in Julie Garwood's Buchanan-Renard series. I found it hard to put down. The romance was fun even though Kate drove me nuts, always thinking that she was not the right woman for Dylan. I enjoyed the rest of the book, including meeting Kate's McKenna cousins. Kate is such a goodie-two-shoes, it was hard to believe she was related to these McKennas.

I wasn't surprised by the villain, but I was shocked by the villain's partner. I certainly didn't see that coming. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

2 stars. Terrible. One of the least romantic books I’ve ever read by Julie Garwood.

The extra star was for the mystery which was decent.

Let’s see… where to begin with this rant?

The heroine is a moron because she’s broke, losing her house, her company, and her whole family’s livelihood is in danger. Suddenly, she gets a large unexpected inheritance of over $80MILLION. But her dead uncle (who left her the money) insulted her mummy in his will, so she says “NO, I DON’T WANT THAT DIRTY MONEY!!” And is willing to let total jerks (her cousins) have it instead. But then the cousins also insult her mummy, so then she decides she will take the money but NO WAY WILL SHE USE IT TOWARDS ANYTHING FOR HERSELF!!! 🤡🤡🤡🤡 I have never before today wished for a book heroine to die a slow painful death...
But this girl was just the definition of TSTL.

The hero is a manwhore, and I absolutely loathe manwhores but I put up with them. In this case though, the hero and heroine have known each other for a long time, but he continues to whore it up in front of her. The ILYs at the end are full of a discussion of how she always came between him and his hookups. And how he always allowed her to because he loved her even then… he just didn’t realize it. UMMM WHAT NOW?!! 🤢🤢🤢🤢 I’m sorry, that’s not romantic and it’s literally the most awful way to tell someone you love them!
SO BASICALLY…
“It’s ok honey, all this time I’ve been fucking Tiffany, Amber, and Susie, it was you I really wanted!”

I seriously can’t with this book. I can’t believe I finished it only to get to THAT ending. Fml.

See below for quotes… bc I can’t not add this BS. The ending was the least romantic crap I’ve ever read. 💩

Unsafe bc my whole brain hurts from how terrible this book was. Hero manwhore, heroine not a virgin but may as well have been from the way she talked and acted. No others during this book but LOTS OF MENTIONS of his past. He thinks it’s HILARIOUS that he’s always been such a LLAAAAADIES MAN and the reader is never allowed to forget that fact. 🤮

———

“Every time I ran into you on Nathan’s Bay, you interfered with my love life. You were such a pain. When you weren’t screwing things up, you were acting like I wasn’t there. I was so damned mad at you all the time, but I kept coming back for more. Then it occurred to me that I always made it a point to find out when you were going to be there for the weekend, and I’d show up, too. Yes, I love you. It just took me awhile to figure it out. And when I did, I started calling you “pickle” just to make you crazy.”
“You knew I didn’t like it.”
“So? I didn’t much like being in love with you. For a long time there I thought you were ignoring me and it . . . unnerved me.”
———

“Yes.” He stepped toward her. “I love you.”
She was afraid to believe it. “Do you tell all of your girlfriends you love them before you leave them? Now that’s just mean.”
“Jill Murdock.”
She backed into the dining room. “Who?”
“Jill Murdock,” he repeated, coming toward her. “When she called the house, you told her I hadn’t made bail yet.”
“I don’t recall—”
“Heather Conroy.” He kept coming; she kept backing away. “You told her you were my wife, but you and I were keeping it quiet because we were first cousins.”
Kate smiled. She’d forgotten that one. “Actually, Jordan came up with that.”
“Stephanie Davis.”
“She bit her lower lip. “I don’t remember her.”
“I couldn’t take her out because I had bubonic plague and was quarantined,” he reminded.
“Those constant phone calls were irritating people.”
“Like who?”
“They irritated your mother.”
He looked absolutely incredulous for a couple of seconds and then burst out laughing. “My mother?”
She shrugged. “I suppose they may have irritated me, too,” she admitted.
He was looking a little too arrogantly pleased.

Decided to give Julie Garwood a go since she'd been recommended to me, but apparently I picked the wrong book or something, because Slow Burn mostly just came across to me as Slow Bore. The blurb was promising, telling me all about how Kate MacKenna was being hounded by things blowing up everywhere she goes, and how said explosions were going to throw her across the path of two different men. And certainly we started off well, with things going splody around Kate as promised.

Except that after two explosions, we got a long stretch through most of the latter half of the book of nothing but conversations, and boring conversations at that. I will give Garwood at least some credit for writing out the conversations in a way that people would likely actually talk, except that the problem with this is that if you're too realistic with your dialogue, including every little offhand comment that a character might say even if it's a bit of a repetition of things that have been said before, it will totally throw off your pacing. I don't need to hear every little word that characters say to one another, especially if I'm reading what's supposed to be a suspense novel about a chick getting stalked by a killer trying to blow her up. I want the characters to stop yapping, and I want to see some things BLOW UP.

Also, I just didn't particularly like the heroine, which took a lot of oomph out of the book for me regardless. She went through the fairly standard waffling about whether she was in love with the handsome dashing hero, up to and including the standard cutesy little things he does that make her think she's got a zillion girlfriends and getting jealous over that. She flat refused to tell the guy she had any feelings for him, of course, and was completely and utterly blown away when he expressed his own sentiments for her, of course. And the heroine and her sisters were all too good and brilliant to be true; this particularly stood out when in one paragraph Garwood has the hero stand back and ogle all three of the women. Multiple sentences all over the book are lavished on how gorgeous they all are, and hardly any at all on what makes these women individuals. I got barely a sense of either of the sisters, who were mostly there to chirp supportive commentary at Kate and to try to shove her at various men to spice up her love life. Last but not least, what Kate chooses to do at the end as a result of a certain plot point that falls into her lap rang absolutely and utterly saccharin to me, and way too much along the lines of "look how virtuous and selfless this person is". Bah.

By the time we got to the ending, what with all the yap yap yap, I was almost too bored to actually pay much attention--but to be fair, the pacing picked up again once we got to the threat of the final bomb and things started. So I will give it points for that. I'll also give it points for handling of sex scenes--while the first one didn't do much for me in general, I approved of not spending too much time on subsequent occurrences of Kate and her guy making love when it had no particular relevance to the action at hand. And there were halfway clever ways of cutting to black with those, too.

All in all, Elizabeth Lowell and Tami Hoag have both done this kind of thing way better. Two stars, and I'll give an extra half for picking up again at the end, so two and a half stars.

Dnf

The plot here is not exhaustive, but with a little attention, everything was deduced before the writer revealed it in the last pages..
It was so boring . The characters are not at all realistic and lack any link to logical thinking and the story background is worthless.
I also hate kate 😒

I hope it's not like Murder list 🙂🙄

4 Accident Prone Stars!!

Dylan Buchanan is a Boston PD Detective on medical leave after being shot. Kate McKenna is a sweet and selfless young woman who runs her own candle and lotion business, she also happens to be Dylan's sister Jordan's bestfriend, who suddenly finds herself the victim of several "accidents". Jordan is concerned for Kate so she persuades Dylan to go to Savannah GA and "look into things".

 photo PicsArt_1508115202270_zpsqguqlv8n.jpg

Turns out Kate is the beneficiary of a very large inheritance which makes her a target of various nasty, greedy distant relatives all who become suspects in all her "accidents". Meanwhile, Dylan and Kate "his pickle" who already have some history are no longer unable to deny their mutual attraction. It's a race against time for Dylan to find the killer before Kate has another accident, one that may finally succeed in killing her.

I loved Kate and her two sisters, her relationship with Jordan, and Dylan & Kate together. All in all, another great "Buchanan-Renard" book!!!

I read this like 3 years ago and liked it, but I'm DNFing it this time. These girls are so freaking ridiculous, it's painful. I am LITERALLY cringing as I read this stupid shit.

The main character, Kate, is foolish and immature. Head in the sand, the family martyr, determined to be alone forever, blind to other people's faults. Hella annoying. I hated everything she did and said. She is about to lose everything - car, home, business, can't pay for college - and $80 million just falls in her lap. Problems solved. The future is bright. Everything will be okay. But "That money came from a meanie, so I don't want it." *smh* This poor dumb bitch. I hate her and I hope she gets blown up again.

I wouldn't feel right taking away the rating or marking this DNF since I did read it (in 2014) and actually gave it three stars (why). But I'm so pissed off - at this dumb book and at myself for giving it three stars - that I'm taking one of those stars away out of spite. Don't fight me on this.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

I liked it but didn't love it.

I think the story was really good but the only thing that bugged me was the heroine, Kate.
Her choices, her way of thinking (or maybe its complete lack of).
In other words, she was too daft for my liking and she started annoying me at some point.
Also, I expected a slow burn.
Well, that wasn't the case in this story so that was a bit disappointing.
But the mystery with a twist is here and it's gripping.

Like I said, the story is good and I liked the hero, Dylan.
I'm a sucker for a hot cop hero.
Maybe I should've read previous books in the series before jumping into this one, dunno.
But I will definitely read them later on.
All in all, a good read.

This is another installment in the series, and I had a really tough time putting it down. I just ripped through the first half of the book and only slowed down because I couldn't spend all my time reading! I know the MacKenna's tie back to Garwood's Historicals, but I'm not quite sure which book they appear in. I love this series.

Kate MacKenna and her sisters have been through a lot. Their father died when they were young and their mother died a year ago. Kate started her company while in high school and now it is a leading specialty company. Everything is looking up for her. Her oldest sister, Keira, is heading back to medical school and her youngest sister, Isabel, is heading for college. She is looking to expand her company and has the backing of the Charlston elite. But, when she discovers a loan, her mother took out, her future is in danger. At a gallery event, she is thrown by a bomb blast, but not badly injured. The hot police detective thinks that the controversial artist, Cinamon is the target. But after the second bomb explodes, they now thing the target is Kate. On the heels of all this Kate is notified that she has received a substantial inheritance from a great-uncle she never knew.

Dylan Buchanan is a Boston cop and the brother of Kate's best friend, Jordan. When Kate calls Jordan with the news about the bombs, Jordan dispatches Dylan to protect Kate and find the bomber. Dylan has quite the reputation with the ladies and when Kate, at a moment of weakness, sleeps with him, she is sure that that is all there will ever be between them. But Dylan has other ideas. But first he needs to figure out who is behind the bombs and stop them.

"Slow Burn" is the story of Kate and Dylan.
Kate MacKenna is the oldest of three sisters, and has been able to overcome all challenges in life- from taking care of her family after her mother's untimely death, to being a pillar of support for her sisters Isabel and Keira, and ultimately running a custom candle business.
Life has kept her busy since she returned back home..until a business venture almost kills her, and she decides to de-stress by visiting her childhood friend Jordan, who has some troubling news herself.
Overcome with all the anxiety, she ends up having a one night stand with Jordan's brother Dylan.
Expecting it to be an one off, she returns back, only to be blown up by another explosion, and soon Dylan realizes that the remote events might be connected to ending Kate's life.
Fast paced thriller with loads of action including crazy exes, evil relatives, hidden inheritance, sibling drama, new lovers and a HEA.
The ending was good but a bit anti-climatic, but Im glad I could not guess the reveal at all. Also The Florist angle was awesome.
If the other sisters get a book, Id like to read it. That being said, this was 20% romance and 80% mystery.

It seems Kate McKenna was born under a lucky star. She has survived two bombings, as well as a near fatal hit and run.

She would tell you she has no enemies ... but that was before she found out a distant uncle left her millions of dollars in his will. Now there are many more suspects to investigate.

Detective Dylan Buchanan is the brother of her very best friend and former college roommate. While visiting her friend, she winds up have a one night stand with Dylan. And Dylan is watching her back ... very closely.

I absolutely adore Julie Garwood's romantic suspense books. The reader gets mystery, thrills, suspense, romance, love, lots of suspects, and plenty of humor. I think it's the humor that pulls me in.

I love the characters! Kate is smart, sassy, and loving. Dylan is irascible, but nothing and no one is as important to him as Kate. He's also a dedicated law enforcement officer and will let nothing harm her.

The book is well written and the ending came as a surprise .... not even close to what I had anticipated.

There are 13 books in this series .... each is terrific as a stand-alone and they don't have to be read in order. If you like romantic suspense, they don't come much better than this.

I like this series and think Julie Garwood has created compelling male leads in the Buchanan family. While this is an interesting story, Kate is a fairly bland character even though her background would suggest otherwise. Dylan is pretty well fleshed out and thank goodness we see a lot of him in the story. It's a good read but not on the level of Heartbreaker and Mercy. I was able to figure out the culprit in the mystery but there is a surprising twist to compensate for that. It was worth my time to read and I ultimately enjoyed the book.

I'm really enjoying the Buchanan-Renard series! I find the books to be a perfect blend of romance & suspense with good murder cases to solve. Slow Burn is the 5th in the series and I enjoyed Dylan and Kate's story. Nice twist at the end although the villain was already on my radar. I'm looking forward to reading more.

The story of Kate, one of three sisters whose life is in danger when she suddenly becomes an heiress, and Dylan, her best friend's brother and detective, who is determined to protect her.

Kate wants nothing to do with her unexpected inheritance, but .

Kate, who is not accustomed to all the danger and life-changing revelations, takes comfort in Dylan, fully intending to keep things casual between them. .

An engaging story with a couple that was meant to be, whose relationship smoothly makes the change from adversarial friendship to love. The series continues with Shadow Dance and Jordan's story next.

This was the last book in Buchanan-McKenna-Whatever series in my TBR list. I'm just addicted to Julie Garwood's books - both contemporary and historical and I was longing to read this one - need to say that I read this series totally out of order.

Well, maybe my expectations were too high. Truth is, I like this book, but is not the best one in the series for me. My fav so far is Killjoy and oh, how I miss John Paul. The plot of Slow Burn is kinda weird.

I didn't feel much chemistry between the main couple - is not that kind of romance that makes you sigh and wish you had someone like Dylan. Also I missed more suspense in the plot - I like to be entertained and wonder who did what or who is killing everyone. I mean, suspense and romance together are ok for me - I like it a lot, actually! But for me both need to have a balance in story.

Since I've noticed that my friends who are Garwood's friends just like me have different opinions about the books, I'd recommend you to read and take your own conclusions. Anyways, Slowburn is a fine reading, perfect for those occasions when all that you want is a bit of romance and not worry about anything else!

Relectura.

¿Perdona? ¿Qué me estás contando?

Lo he buscado.

Menudo chasco.

Sigo con la saga. Ya veremos.

(reseña anterior, primera lectura)

He terminado con esta saga.

Ms. Garwood's contemporary work is vastly enthralling and I'm loving all the mystery in it.

What I love about this series is the amazing unexpected twists it contains, and the fact that it's not predictable. Usually I can sense the bad guy from the beginning or the middle of the book, but in this series I didn't know till the author herself revealed his identity, and I think this shows how much of a great writer she is.

- The relationship between the main characters was amusing, one second they try to act cold to each other, the next they are over each other trying to tear their clothes off, and the next they act like friends. The fact that the hero knew what he wanted from the beginning was great, he's not the type to be in denial or misery like the heroine but he welcomed it with a shit eating grin XD

- I liked the sub characters, from the sisters to the flamboyant friend, he was amusing the most XD

- I loved the story itself about the heroine getting blown up wherever she went and still they didn't know about the reason for the attempts most of the book.

- I loved the twist about the bomber contacting her to help her, it certainly wasn't expected and it was entertaining.

- I liked the fact that everyone around them turned to the hero for permission or decision making regarding the heroine as if he was her "handler" XD

Overall, *thumbs up*

The fifth book in Julie Garwood's Buchanan-Renard series. Kate MacKenna and her sisters are continuing on with their lives after their mother died one year before. Kate has her own business making scented candles and lotions. She goes to Boston to be there for her friend, Jordan Buchanan, while she undergoes some medical tests. During a weak moment she ends up in bed with Jordan's brother, Dylan. Now it appears that someone may be wanting her dead. Hearing this, Dylan rushes to South Carolina to help out since he is on leave, recuperating from a bullet wound anyway.

Another exciting addition to the series. It was interesting trying to figure out who wanted Kate dead and why. I would highly recommend this series.
