Gaiman takes some creative liberties in his retelling of the myths, but they stay close to Snorri Sturluson's recanting of the myths in The Prose Edda (one of the first written accounts of Norse myths). However, we must bear in mind that Snorri himself wrote the Edda long after Iceland had abandoned belief of the Pagan gods in favour of Christianity. Therefore, everything that Snorri (and, by extension, Gaiman) writes about Old Norse myths should be taken with a grain of salt. (less)
