I understand that this series is a spin off of the Parasol Protectorate series, can I read this without having read the Parasol Protectorate or would I get more out of this by reading the other series first?

I have loved the writer so far. But I'm Indian, and I'm guessing that this is the colonial era's depiction. Don't get me wrong, I'm not unreasonable, but this can be a touchy subject. So I don't want to end up hating a perfectly reliable author because of any unintentional lack of tact. Should I read this?

Colonialism is definitely an important topic in the book but I'm not sure it's handled all that well, it mostly sees and shows things from Rue's very British perspective, which is not the most open-minded. Also, I've read some reviews by other readers who criticized the book for its cultural appropriation. I don't feel in a position to properly judge this and I'd love to hear the perspective of an Indian reader but I'm also unsure if you'll like what you read.(less)
