Did You Hear The One About My Mother In Law?

The last time she visited, she was already sick. When she left, I walked around my house in a daze, inhaling the smells. In the kitchen, the odors from the supper she’d insisted on making the night before: salty grease from the fried chicken and okra, sticky sweetness from the strawberries and marshmallow yams. In the bathroom, the clean tang of her Avon astringent and body cream. And in the guest Read more of this blog post »

“Yesterday when I got off the bus, I walked to your taxicab first. I was attracted to the black-and-white squares along the roof and the bright green paint, but otherwise, there wasn’t any reason for my choice, was there?”
“No,” he said.
“Was there a reason that you were at the bus station rather than somewhere else in the city?”
“I guess not.”
“This is the charming coincidence. When things in the world that are unconnected suddenly connect, and a pattern emerges.”
He exhaled. “But what if the pattern wasn’t what you’d call charming?”
“It’s not the pattern that’s charming,” she said. “It’s that there is a pattern at all.”
Lisa Tucker, Once Upon a Day

“I’m not talking about the place filled with flames. I mean the hell the world is when cruelty doesn’t have a reason. When suffering is unrelenting and unrelieved by love.”
Lisa Tucker

“Off course, if Steven had a wife in the attic, like Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, that, I thought, would be another matter entirely. But the very idea made me laugh. His building had no attic, and his one small closet couldn't even hold a skeleton. It was too packed with clothes, his and mine.”

Kevin Has everyone read Lisa Tucker's outstanding article in the NEW YORK TIMES (8/22/11) on being diagnosed with a brain aneurysm while writing THE WINTERS IN BLOOM and how she postponed surgery until she'd finished the manuscript?

She writes: "I wanted to finish my novel. If anything, this goal had become urgent now that I knew this might be the last book I would ever write. I was fascinated by the way the book was changing as I went through all this. Though the novel I was writing had nothing to do with my aneurysm, the story kept surprising me as it became more optimistic, more engaged with the beauty of life. I changed the title from "The House of Doubt" to "The Winters in Bloom."
