From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Game of Thrones, we've learned that dead is never really dead... even if you see a body. Gaming has built its bedrock on surprise resurrections, with the likes of Commander Shepard, Albert Wesker, and Big Boss being just a few of them.
Call of Duty is also no stranger to shock resurrections, bringing back Frank Woods, Phillip Graves, Alex Mason, and more. For once, it looks like the upcoming Black Ops 6 will make some major deaths stick - although fans are already looking for a way to get around it.
Call of Duty fans are already trying to save Hudson and Mason
Infinity Ward has been accused of being unable to kill off its characters, but thankfully, Treyarch is taking the reins for Black Ops 6 and it looks like it has bloodlust in its eyes. We'd already heard that the game was going with the 'bad' ending of Black Ops 2, killing off Mason and Jason Hudson, but now, it's been locked in.
Speaking on the official Call of Duty podcast, Activision Senior Director of Communications at Activision Stephanie Snowden cleared up some of the confusion surrounding the game's timeline and which version of Black Ops 2 would be canon.
As well as confirming the campaign takes place in 1991, Snowden explained it follows the events of Black Ops Cold War but is directly tied to the '80s era of Black Ops 2. She says, "That obviously includes Hudson and Mason dying, yes, they're dead, I'm sorry."
Although she says, "A lot of people were confused about that," she again reiterates, "They’re dead." The repercussions of this will still be felt, with Snowden telling us how he'll be "traumatically injured" by the death of his two comrades at the hands of Raul Menendez.
While it looks pretty definitive that the pair will remain in the ground, not everyone is convinced. Replying to Charlie Intel's post about Hudson and Mason, one fan reminded us, "This doesn't exactly mean that Mason is 100% dead.
"In Black Ops 2's ending where Mason comes back, Woods truly believed he was dead. Mason being alive doesn't change the fact Woods believes he killed his best friend. Woods would still be "affected" by his "death". Hudson is dead."
It's true that if you shoot Mason in the chest instead of the head, Woods only thought he was dead, leaving him to return at the end with Section. We wouldn't put it past the team to pull another stunt like this, and with Snowden putting so much emphasis on Mason's death, it would be a clever way to throw us off the scent.
Thanks to Black Ops 2's dual timelines, there's already plenty of confusion when it comes to Black Ops 6's place in the complicated CoDverse. Keeping Hudson and Mason dead neatly streamlines things, but with the writers liking to keep us on our toes, we wouldn't count any eventuality out until the final credits roll.
