6th London Flickr Group Photowalk - 29th October 2pm

We’ll start off at Brompton Cemetery in West London, following a request from a previous photowalker.

Yes, a cemetery just before Halloween!

It’s a famous location, but one that’s off the usual tourist routes, and hopefully it’ll be new to some people.

There are some ivy-clad and overgrown graves as well as interesting headstones and impressive colonnades. Hopefully autumn leaf colour aplenty, with squirrels and crows darting about for the nature photographers.

To quote the website: “Nestled among the spectacular trees and undergrowth are over 35,000 gravestones and monuments. The cemetery is alive with the amazing stories of all the people buried there since the 1830s, including some well-known names like Emmeline Pankhurst and John Snow.”

We’ll then jump on a tube from West Brompton up to High Street Kensington, stroll down to the old Commonwealth Institute, now the Design Museum, for all the architecture fans.

Then it’s through Holland Park, via the Japanese garden for a bit more nature and people watching.

At the top of Holland Park you can bail out for the central line at the eponymous tube station, or we’ll wend our way up Portobello Road market. Hopefully by that time the crowds will have dropped to manageable levels for the street photographers, and we’ll finish at Ladbroke Grove tube for the Circle Line.

Timings and logistics:

It’ll be on Saturday the 29th (a Saturday in order to catch Portobello market. And no, there isn’t a Chelsea home game)

On the route there’s numerous cafes, pubs and toilet options, and we’ll try and squeeze in a drinks break depending on timings. The whole route should be accessible, and people will have a number of options if they only want to do part of it.

Meeting place: Fulham Broadway tube station is in a shopping centre, so let’s meet outside on Fulham Road at 2pm. Sunset is 5.40, so that’s plenty of time.

goo.gl/maps/DuhKhiEaazezwBVL6

All tube stations mentioned are in zone 2.

All welcome, no charge.

Sorry for the short notice, and I hope you can come along!

Great, it sounds like a good route in a part of London that I don't know so well. I hope to be with you all again on this one, unfortunately I had to miss out on the Olympic Park walk due to a prior engagement.

I think you've come up with a great route. I've been meaning to get to Brompton Cemetery for ages. As for the date, people will even get an extra hour in bed next morning.....

Visiting cemeteries is right up my street so to speak. However, I'm actually going to be in the Brompton Catacombs on the fifth of November (SubBrit visit) so I may be overdoing the death theme here.

I like the idea of this walk though-moving through a specific borough.

HoosierSands: A shame as it would've been great to meet you. Enjoy the Catacombs....... Having done the more obvious photowalk destinations now we'll be doing more of these 'slightly off the beaten track' walks next year.

On this point, If anyone has local knowledge of particular areas that they think would be of interest then it would be great to hear from hear from you.

Hi all, just a reminder - one week to go before the Brompton Cemetery, Holland Park and Portobello Road market photowalk. Full details at the top of this thread.
Weather forecast looks like it should be okay, and hopefully there will still be some leaves left on the trees, so we should have a good mix of nature, architecture and street photography.

Any more takers?

I'll be there as I'm looking forward to seeing some bits of London I'm not familiar with. I'll also probably pop by the Frieze Sculptures in Regents Park in the morning as they're only there for a few more weeks ( viewer.mapme.com/aa44e7e0-a315-4131-85d2-5ab56fe64837 ).

I'll post on a few of the other London Flickr groups to spread the word, likewise my own social media. It would be great if people can similarly spread the word as I'm sure there's a load of people that would be interested in this beyond the limited number of people that regularly check in to this group.

The intention is there but, it will be up to what my body dictates on the day. If I manage to join, more than likely I will split before completing the intended route.

Thanks to for organising another great photowalk. Another bad journey back - train cancelled due to lack of staff - but did not mar the day!

A couple from the cemetery, it was a lovely bonus getting inside the chapel:-

Just noticed that the shot up into the dome is number 5000, I got the camera almost exactly 5 months ago!

Thanks to everyone that made it along yesterday for what turned out to be a great Autumn afternoon of photography.

Also, I didn't speak to them myself at Brompton Cemetery so thanks to those that did but Mandy Willard and Darren Wilkins have now joined our group.

Here's one of Darren's shots of the chapel dome :

Here's one of Mandy's shots of one of the Cemetery's famous inhabitants. Will have to find this myself next time I visit :

Thanks everyone for coming along! Hope you had fun and let's see more of those photos...
On reflection, we should have started at West Brompton tube - that walk from Fulham Broadway was longer and less interesting than I remember! Sorry!

If anyone is up for another walk this year, I'd be happy to do the Low Line in the first weekend in December - a gentrification trek alongside the rail viaducts from Bermondsey tube to Southwark tube, via foodie culture, street photography, old industrial buildings, the amazing London Fashion & Textile Museum, the Shard and Borough Market.

I think I'm currently free on the 3rd and 4th Dec. Having stumbled across parts of the Lowline before I think it would be a good option, not least as it would be less sunshne dependent than a lot of other options.

I suppose most of us know the bit from London Bridge to Bankside quite well but Bermondsey to London Bridge will be new ground for me.

Lowline sounds good - I used to work at Palestra (glass building opposite Southwark Tube station) and still do some days, so know bits of it and don't know others. Would enjoy. I'm free on 3rd Dec (sadly not 4th).

Really enjoyed Saturday - had a really good time. Need to actually process some photos!
