5th London Flickr Photowalk, 2pm, Sunday 10th July, 2022

In conjunction with fellow Moderator Fozelek I can now announce the next Photowalk will take place at 2pm on Sunday 10h July.

Having considered the options we're opting for a Stratford / Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park / Hackney Wick route. We've worked out a route of approx 4km (2.5 miles) which should provide a good variety of photographic subjects.

As per the previous walks the idea is have a leisurely walk of about 3hrs, chatting and taking photos as we go. We'll make a pitstop for tea / coffee somewhere on route and then those that want too can head to a pub / cafe for a drink and / or food in Hackney Wick.

Fozelek walked the route last week and confirms it's 'step free'. He says, "We'll start with the intriguing Haugen restaurant and Zaha Hadid's Aqauatic Centre and then on to see Anish Kapoor's giant Orbital up close (but we won't be going up or taking the slide).

We'll then a walk through the parkland towards the Velodrome. On the way there are impressive wildflowers and gardens, some intriguing sculpture, riverside views, locks, etc. See the Olympic rings and the Paralympic Agitos symbol and the Blossom Garden - London's coronavirus memorial. There's usually some good people watching, and also on my last visit I saw a weasel running along one of the paths.

Crossing over towards the Copper Box arena to see the giant RUN sculpture and then over the water to Hackney Wick for a quick tour of street art, regeneration, old industrial buildings and hipsterism.
We'll finish at Hackney Wick in one of the many breweries / pubs (e.g. the Lord Napier).

When we're done you can get the London Overground train back to Stratford from the photogenic Hackney Wick station (frequency = every 15 minutes). Alternatively those that are up for it can follow the river path down opposite the industrial Fish Island, round the bottom of the West Ham London Stadium and then walk back to Stratford. That extends the route to about 6km.

Meet outside Stratford Underground station Westfield exit. This is adjacent to Montifichet Road, near the escalator that heads up onto The Street.
Stratford and Hackney Wick are both Zone 2.

The Stratford Underground station entrance / exit is on the left of this picture (the blue strip). We'll meet by the freestanding TfL sign near the bottom of the escalator to The Street.'

Feel free to bring partners, friends, children etc along as there are no particular limits on numbers. As always, I'm not asking people to commit now but if you can indicate whether you think you'll be able to join us then that would be useful. Likewise, if you've any questions or comments please either post them below or alternatively you can send me a flickrmail.

Looking forward to it,

Darrell (A London Flickr Group Admin).

P.S. We were going to try and organise this for a Saturday but it was proving tricky so apologies to anyone for whom Sunday is problematic. We will definitely try to arrange the September / October photowalk for a Saturday.

breakbeat: We're planning to end up at a Hackney Wick microbrewery for about 5pm so if you just have the one pint and then get the overground train back to Stratford then I'd think it would be 6pm. If you have two and then walk back to Stratford I'd think it would be 7pm.

There's also the option to take the train back from Hackney Wick to Stratford, takes a couple of minutes, every 15 minutes or so. There's also the 388 bus that crosses the park back to Stratford.

A week to go so I've just checked the forecast : looks like we should have a decent temperature with sunshine and clouds. We've had mixed luck with the weather for previous Photowalks so fingers crossed.......

paul_appleyard: Think I've been to Copenhagen about eight times as we have friends there. Definitely one of my favourite cities (after London.....), not least as there's so much amazing contemporary architecture in and around the city. If you'd like any pointers then you could take a look at my Copenhagen album : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157656189912739

jimbowen0306: Yes, the idea is it's an informal social event, albeit one with a focus on photography (pun not fully intended.....). If you have partners, kids, friends, relatives, pets etc that fancy a relatively relaxed pace walk on a sunny Sunday afternoon they're welcome to come along.

Just to reassure you all bearing in mind the heat -
1. there's quite a bit of shade on the route.
2. there are numerous opportunities for refreshments and toilet breaks - both at the start (numerous options at Westfield, including a M&S right next to the station) and along the way - as we ahead along Tessa Jowell Boulevard, at the Timber Lodge park cafe and in Hackney Wick (Lord Napier or some other provider of refreshing beverages).

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow... at least it won't be as cold, wet and windy as our trip to Battersea!

ps No DLR between Stratford and Canary Wharf, and the Elizabeth line doesn't work on Sundays. Central, Overground and Jubilee all look good.
