London Flickr Group Photowalk (See the new thread for details)
Darrell Godliman says:
I'm thinking it would be good to organise our first Photowalk to tie in with the Flickr Global Day of Photowalks on Saturday 4th April. |
StephenCotterellPhotography says:
May I join you?
Darrell Godliman says:
I don't see why not unless you know something I don't ;-) It would be good to catch up.
stagedoor says:
As long as it is not one of LNER's restricted/no service days in and out of King's Cross I'll be there.
Darrell Godliman says:
stagedoor: Great. Flickr HQ have confirmed this is still going ahead, I was starting to wonder as it'd gone a bit quiet. Even if it doesn't for some reason there's no reason not to meet. It would be good to put some faces to names (and avatars.....).
andy.peter says:
I'll try my best to be there. Being just to the east of London it's easy for me. |
Darrell Godliman says:
andy.peter: Thanks. It does seem even the London Flickr Meetups group haven't met for over a year but I think they're a great way to meet other photographers and maybe learn something new. The Oxford Flickr Group for which I'm also an Admin held an Architectural Photowalk back in November and we had over forty people come along for the afternoon and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

kimbenson45 says:
Ooh, yes, I'd like to join in!
StephenCotterellPhotography says:
I've shared news of this group and the walk in the #6degreesphotowalk Facebook group |
Darrell Godliman says:
kimbenson45: Excellent. |
stuarthumphreys.photography says:
Sounds interesting
Bill-Green says:
Sounds good, hope I can join.
Darrell Godliman says:
Thanks everyone. I appreciate it's a long way off yet but it's starting to feel like we should be able to get a reasonable size group together......
roadscum says:
Will there be bins? ; )
Darrell Godliman says:
roadscum: I'm sure we can find you some.......
Darrell Godliman says:
I think Monument Square at the base of the Monument to the Great Fire of London would be a good place to meet. Details here if you need them : www.themonument.org.uk/plan/getting-here/ |
roadscum says:
That's good for me, I'm on the District Line.
StephenCotterellPhotography says:
What a great place to start
stagedoor says:
Good for me too. LNER have confirmed timetable now and tickets booked!
tomianknowles says:
I'll be there too... especially as I feel like I should have met lots of you all by now.
Darrell Godliman says:
roadscum: , StephenCotterellPhotography: & stagedoor: Good to hear. |
Darrell Godliman says:
A Flickr blog post has appeared today so it's good to see they're starting to ramp up the publicity : blog.flickr.net/en/2020/02/10/save-the-date-for-a-new-glo...

Thanks for organising this, I hope to be able to come.
multituba says:
I'm up for that 👍 |
Darrell Godliman says:
multituba: & Huw J: The more the merrier......
photosam says:
Would like to attend this. It has been over a decade since I last attended a Flickr meetup, and this would be a nice reintroduction.
Darrell Godliman says:
photosam: Excellent. I'm a member of various London groups but none seem to have met in years. As Admin of the Oxford group we still have regular meetups and photowalks and although numbers aren't what they used to be it's been a great way to meet a varied bunch of people.
Nick Biswell says:
I plan to be there on the 4th. By the way, I've walked to the top of the Monument last year with my daughter. Views are ok but there's a lot of close nit meshing up there to stop people jumping. It's difficult to get a good shot without the meshing in the way
Darrell Godliman says:
Nick Biswell: I'd agree with you about the Monument mesh. It's fine for phone cameras but why these places can't just have holes big enough for a DSLR lense I'm not sure. |
StephenCotterellPhotography says:
This might help with the mesh problem youtu.be/-rlPEl2Yy84
Nick Biswell says:
thanks for the mesh tips
Darrell Godliman says:
StephenCotterellPhotography: Thanks for the link. The Adorama Youtube channel has hundreds of interesting looking videos covering all sorts of different types and style of photography.

Flickr HQ have been in contact with me to say there's some Flickr / Smugmug 'swag' on it's way to me to distribute on the day........ Before anyone gets too excited I suspect they're talking about badges, stickers etc but this should be helpful in case anyone gets temporarily separated if nothing else. |
zarul3 says:
nice
tomianknowles says:
Whatever the weather, we can all make it a really enjoyable day. Even if the light is flat or it pours all day, there's always the opportunity to meet new people, plenty of banter, coffee to keep warm and finish with a beer. All good :)
Darrell Godliman says:
tomianknowles: Agreed, and I think with the route I'm planning there's plenty of scope for different types of photography so we're not reliant on blue skies.

Darrell Godliman says:
I will but probably only a week or two before as I want to have a 'dry run' first to check there's no issues with access etc.

sleepercreeper says:
I’m flying in to London that day — I’d love to try to join in!
Aremel55 says:
Hi. Trying to rearrange a couple of things so I can join you all - could be more a flash mob than a mere "walk"!
Darrell Godliman says:
sleepercreeper: Great (assuming planes are still flying by then......) |
Darrell Godliman says:
Whilst it's not essential to indicate your intention to come along just yet, about a week beforehand it would be good to have a good indication of the sort of numbers we're expecting in case the route needs to be tweaked accordingly to suit the expected number of attendees.
RadioKate says:
I'd be interested in joining - but I'm terrible at planning far ahead of time.. so long as someone reminds me a week before then I'm in (if you'll have me!)

Over 100 new members of the Londonn group in the last 24hrs....... I can see this being a pretty large turnout on the day.......

nicsimpson2 says:
I would like to join you for the day
Darrell Godliman says:
breakbeat: I think I'm only going to release further details of the route after I've been on a recon trip in a fortnights time. I was thinking I might start a London Flickr Facebook page as it might prove useful on the day if people get lost etc. By the way do you know of any Apps that people could use to track our progress ? I'm sure there are such things out there...... |

Darrell Godliman says:
tomianknowles: I don't remember that but I did miss the 2018 one so it could be they introduced it then....... Before that they sent a series of text messages to peoples mobiles but the first year they introduced that it stopped working a few hours into the event.

Darrell Godliman says:
tomianknowles: I did an Architectural Photowalk in Oxford back in November for about 40 people and we only lost a few along the way. I guess as long as people know the route they should be able to catch up as we shouldn't be too hard to miss......

elite laugh [deleted] says:
Hoping to be there. I've been on Flickr for years but have never been to a photowalk or ever met another Flickrite before.
Darrell Godliman says:
Guy Tyler: Probably the same for a lot of people so all the more reason to come along.
J Zee says:
Sounds interesting never do Phonewalk with Flickr group.... 🤔😁

I’ll be there all being well. Jane

simonsanders says:
Will add to my calendar and try to come along. Have a reasonable DSLR and a decent eye but only amateur experience, rather than any technical knowhow.

Mike Rockey says:
I would love to join you guys are the details still the same 2pm sat 4th april at the base of the monument?
chetwynd4 says:
I'd love to join you too; it would be great to discover new corners of London, revisit old ones and with new influences, i.e. all of you!

stagedoor says:
Indeed. Advice and events are changing rapidly. If anyone was planning to attend the Photography Show in Birmingham this coming weeked, it has been postponed:- |
PuebloFuerte says:
I hope to join you all. If its still going ahead, "life must go on", as the wise saying goes.
stagedoor says:
"Dr Harries [England deputy chief medical officer] said cancelling big outdoor events like football matches would not necessarily be a decision supported by science. |
Darrell Godliman says:
stagedoor: There's no need to make a decision for a couple of weeks and who knows what the situation will be by then. I'm aware some people will have booked trains etc but if official advice changes then we'll need to give it further consideration. It might be that officially it is postponed but presumably those that want to meet up still can.
Bartez83 says:
I would love to join, I've never took part in any photowalk.
The Commuter Consultant says:
Assuming we will still be allowed to congregate in groups by then, I'll try to make it too.
Darrell Godliman says:
I've been emailed by flickr HQ to say they've made the decision to reschedule the event for later in the year. Presumably this won't come to a big surprise if you've been following the news in the few days........ flickr.com/groups/flickr10photowalks/discuss/721577134617... |
J Zee says:
Oh well understood, better save and sorry....... hoping meet you guys 😁

RoySutherland235 says:
www.flickr.com/photos/79986881@N00/ ... hopefully we can arrange a walk once this corona virus outbreak has passed, Darrell.
Darrell Godliman says:
J Zee: & RoySutherland235: Will definitely reschedule for later in the year...... It's just a question of when.
RoySutherland235 says:
Cheers Darrell ... count me in (when the time comes)
Croydon Clicker says:
No surprise really considering recent events. Looking forward to it when it does eventually happen ;-)
Mike Rockey says:
Send me an update if you re-schedule 👍
Darrell Godliman says:
So about now everyone would have been on their way to meetup for the photowalk...... How things can change in a couple of weeks....... Still no news from Flickr HQ as when they'll be able to reschedule the worldwide event but I for one would be keen to get out with my camera soon after any restrictions are lifted....... |
Darrell Godliman says:
The 'swag' that flickr HQ sent me will have to wait...... www.instagram.com/p/B-jyCkLn1tM/
Darrell Godliman says:
So, who feels we should look to arrange a socially distanced photowalk this side of Christmas ? Not sure myself but looking to get a feel of the general consensus........
tomianknowles says:
At the moment it's pretty much no-go until the government change restrictions on this: |
tomianknowles says:
otherwise the limit is 6 people!
tomianknowles says:
Which I guess is fine if you don't have more than 5 responses lol |
roadscum says:
Well the event transport company I used to work for has fallen victim to covid and, as far as I know, gone into liquidation. I do some agency driving as well and that's as busy as anything but it looks like my days of snapping random rubbish round central London are pretty much at an end, barring the odd recreational ramble. |
Darrell Godliman says:
tomianknowles: How about Clause 2.9, "you can continue to meet in larger groups if necessary for work, voluntary or charitable services, education, childcare or training, elite sporting competition or training, to fulfil legal obligations, to provide emergency assistance, or to enable someone to avoid illness, injury or risk of harm." |
Darrell Godliman says:
roadscum: Sorry to hear about your previous Employer but good to hear Agency work is keeping you busy. I guess there's probably quite a few people here either in similar circumstances, or very nervous they will be over the coming months...... |
tomianknowles says:
This is positive... there's seems a lot of wiggle room for us. I don't have any problem per se with meeting up in a 'group' as I'm sure we are all responsible people. But I think we are in a grey zone, as I wouldn't like to convince a police officer that we were an educational group rather than a social one... despite the chances of us being challenged incredibly slim to zero. I've got to be over-cautious though because of the industry I work in. That being said, if things change with government group meeting advice outside, then I'd love to attend. But don't let me stop you guys from going... as I mentioned... I'm being totally anal about meeting others in groups purely because of my work lol I'll keep checking in with the group on this page though to see what's going on :) Above all, just wanted to thank you very much for organising this and keeping it the event alive. Fingers crossed we'll be the first flickr group to conduct a photo walk :)
