London Flickr Group Photowalk (See the new thread for details)

Darrell Godliman is a group administrator Darrell Godliman says:

I'm thinking it would be good to organise our first Photowalk to tie in with the Flickr Global Day of Photowalks on Saturday 4th April.

Other than a Flickr Blog post a couple of months ago, as yet, there's not been much publicity about this but there is some info about this event in the Flickr Worldwide Photowalk group : www.flickr.com/groups/flickr10photowalks/discuss/72157711...

It would be a good chance to meet each other and take photos. We could look to organise a competition of some kind for photos taken on the day but I'd want want to keep it 'fun' as I appreciate there's photographers of all levels of ability in the group.

It's intended to be an informal social event but I'm sure if anyone has any particular questions about photography as we go, given the breadth of knowledge in the group someone should be able to assist.

My suggestion is to meet at 2pm in Monument Square at the base of the Monument to the Great Fire of London. Details here if you need them : www.themonument.org.uk/plan/getting-here/

We would then spend 2 or 3 hours walking at a leisurely pace through the City to Spittalfields and finish in the Brick Lane area. Such a route would offer all sorts of photographic opportunities including Architecture, Urban / Street photography, Street Art etc

For those that want too I imagine we'll finish with a drink in a pub (or cafe), assuming we can find somewhere that could accommodate us.......

It would be good to get some idea of possible numbers so if you can indicate here whether that's something you might be interested in then that would be helpful.

If the event is considered a success then we'd look to organise further photowalks, potentially exploring lesser known areas of London.

Any questions or suggestion feel free to post these below or send me a flickrmail.

Darrell.

P.S I think Monument Square at the base of the Monument to the Great Fire of London would be a good place to meet. Details here if you need them : www.themonument.org.uk/plan/getting-here/

Important : Flickr have today announced they're postponing the Photowalk to avoid risking spreading the coronavirus. We're hoping to have a new date soon : flickr.com/groups/flickr10photowalks/discuss/721577134617...

I'll try my best to be there. Being just to the east of London it's easy for me.
We used to do quite a few of these meet-ups on an Olympus group I belong too but they seem to have dried up.

andy.peter: Thanks. It does seem even the London Flickr Meetups group haven't met for over a year but I think they're a great way to meet other photographers and maybe learn something new. The Oxford Flickr Group for which I'm also an Admin held an Architectural Photowalk back in November and we had over forty people come along for the afternoon and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

I plan to be there on the 4th. By the way, I've walked to the top of the Monument last year with my daughter. Views are ok but there's a lot of close nit meshing up there to stop people jumping. It's difficult to get a good shot without the meshing in the way

Before anyone gets too excited I suspect they're talking about badges, stickers etc but this should be helpful in case anyone gets temporarily separated if nothing else.

When I went on a London photowalk that Flickr organinsed last Summer ( flickr.com/photos/alastairjolly/48214410281 ) this definitely would've been useful as it would've avoided walking up to strangers with DSLRs and asking them if they were from flickr......

Unless I'm mistaken the group does seem to have had an influx of members today, presumably this is because you've seen the emails flickr sent out regarding the Photowalks ?

Whilst it's not essential to indicate your intention to come along just yet, about a week beforehand it would be good to have a good indication of the sort of numbers we're expecting in case the route needs to be tweaked accordingly to suit the expected number of attendees.

As for apps to track people's location, it's possible to share your location with other contacts you choose on Google maps. You can switch the feature on and off at will but it does seem a bit personal to be making a bunch of (mostly) strangers your contacts just so we can see where we all are.

Indeed. Advice and events are changing rapidly. If anyone was planning to attend the Photography Show in Birmingham this coming weeked, it has been postponed:-

"To date, The Photography Show & The Video Show has been following Government guidelines regarding the continuation of our event surrounding the outbreak of Coronavirus. However, as the news has been progressing we have listened to the concerns, from all parties, around the health and welfare of their staff.
The wellbeing of our visitors, exhibitors and staff is of the utmost importance, we have therefore taken the extremely difficult decision to postpone The Photography Show & The Video Show until later in the year, when we will be able to deliver the show you deserve. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation. "

You can meet in groups of up to six people who you do not live with or who are not in your support bubble.

You can also meet people in groups of more than six people if everyone is exclusively from two households (anyone in the same support bubble counts as one household)."

Well the event transport company I used to work for has fallen victim to covid and, as far as I know, gone into liquidation. I do some agency driving as well and that's as busy as anything but it looks like my days of snapping random rubbish round central London are pretty much at an end, barring the odd recreational ramble.
Bearing that in mind I'm quite interested in the idea of a socially distanced walk if it's practical and more importantly, provided I'm not working. Most of my agency jobs are at the weekend so unless the walk is midweekish I may have to give it a miss.

Oh well, there will eventually be other opportunities I'm sure, it's just a matter of when.

Couldn't a photowalk count as 'Educational' or am I thinking too much like a Government Advisor ?

roadscum: Sorry to hear about your previous Employer but good to hear Agency work is keeping you busy. I guess there's probably quite a few people here either in similar circumstances, or very nervous they will be over the coming months......

I'm guessing our first photowalk would probably be a weekend to suit the majority (myself included......) but it's really not clear if it will be possible to do anyhting this side of Christmas. Given shorter days and the chance of some decent weather declining pretty quickly once we hit November I would think the latest we would try to organise one would be mid to late October.

A night shoot would be good to consider at some point too but I'm guessing late night transport is still affected so some might have trouble getting home afterwards.

This is positive... there's seems a lot of wiggle room for us. I don't have any problem per se with meeting up in a 'group' as I'm sure we are all responsible people. But I think we are in a grey zone, as I wouldn't like to convince a police officer that we were an educational group rather than a social one... despite the chances of us being challenged incredibly slim to zero. I've got to be over-cautious though because of the industry I work in. That being said, if things change with government group meeting advice outside, then I'd love to attend. But don't let me stop you guys from going... as I mentioned... I'm being totally anal about meeting others in groups purely because of my work lol I'll keep checking in with the group on this page though to see what's going on :) Above all, just wanted to thank you very much for organising this and keeping it the event alive. Fingers crossed we'll be the first flickr group to conduct a photo walk :)
