An interesting conversational drama that manages to entertain despite the absence of any significant plot. Great performances, beautiful cinematography, the script is a bit weaker in the last act, but overall, this is a nice film. The ending feels pretty ambiguous, so you can choose your own interpretation. I’m satisfied with it, four stars. ()
A smart and very enjoyable film thanks to the absence of clichés and cynicism. Although the story is built mostly on dialogues, it kept me in suspense the whole time I was waiting for the final resolution. The viewer will appreciate the ornate dialogue, and some scenes, such as the one in the planetarium, are sure to give you chills. The impeccable impression of the film is enhanced by the great cinematography, music and, of course, Spacey's one-man-show, about which there is no point in going into more detail. ()
Excellent actors, sensitive directing. But what’s up with that screenplay? From roughly the midpoint (the first hypnosis), K-PAX develops in a direction that’s completely different from where it was initially headed and its conclusion is the culmination of a story that never took off in the film! Not to mention that the hopes offered by the promising start and the whole first half are thus sucked into a black hole between Mercury and Pluto. ()
A film that is magnificent, slow-paced, and soothing in the purest way, which on further viewings has gained a stamp of genius in my eyes. Kevin Spacey demonstrates that even the most challenging role is not insurmountable for him, and Jeff Bridges brings the perfect qualities to his humane role. Criticisms towards the screenplay are irrelevant; if prot only wandered around a mental institution, treated patients, and awed everyone with his knowledge of the universe, it would quickly lose the magic that makes these scenes unforgettable. It is precisely the dramatic storyline, unfolding in the second half, that gives K-PAX the aura of a meticulously crafted film until the very last scene. ()
Movies never stop surprising me. Every now and then, something that's been out for ages pops up, and I realize I've missed out on a gem. K-PAX is one of those films. It's brilliantly thought-out, yet at its core, it's a deeply human story—the kind of film that's always a joy to watch. All it takes is a solid concept, flawless execution, and, of course, that final key ingredient: brilliant actors. And here, we get two of them, going head-to-head: Kevin Spacey as the mysterious patient and Jeff Bridges as the intrigued doctor. ()
