Varvara, a professor of philosophy, is discussing the concept of God’s death with her students. She is visited by her sister Angelina, an eminent gynaecologist who has been recalled from Moscow and sent to another city, where she is to reduce the number of abortions. Not long afterwards a girl comes to see her at the hospital, asking her to perform an abortion, claiming that she is carrying the Antichrist in her womb. After a heated dispute with a student, Varvara ponders the presence of evil in human nature, while Angelina carries out an illegal abortion on the girl and takes the embryo home with her... This mystical film by Anja Kreis is beguiling for its ominous atmosphere and raises uncomfortable questions about human conscience, morality and faith, although it declines to provide definitive answers. (KVIFF 2024) The Alienated is a prime example of how a compelling cinematic theme can be successfully buried under a dull and confusing execution. The anti-Christ intro had a really promising mystery charge, but then it just shot off into the void, and never came back. The plot line with the dead God, as well as the abortion theme, also came to nothing, and the bizarrely abrupt ending was the icing on the cake. A soulless film. ()
At the same time, I both hate and appreciate it. Cinematically, it seemed quite bleak to me, like a very cheap variation of possession horror films, trying to say something, but failing miserably and resorting to unnecessary quotes from philosophy. On the other hand, there was something about the story that kept pulling me in, and I couldn't take my eyes off it because it constantly keeps you in suspense and promises a shocking twist. In the end, right after finishing the movie, it seemed like nonsense to me because the final scene was just extremely sloppy, but, surprisingly, very strong at the same time, albeit after that abrupt ending? The Alienated was simply a terribly polarizing experience for me, and I felt somewhat schizophrenic afterwards. However, over time, I began to replay all those details and hints and thoughts in my head, which were very well hidden, and I must say that despite having extremely mixed feelings, it's not a bad film at all. Very cold and detached, but in a good way. KVIFF 2024 ()
