Director, playwright, screenwriter, essayist, and teacher. He studied directing and screenwriting in Hollywood during the 1920s before making his debut in the industry in 1937. Back in Mexico, he directed over 80 films. With Champion Without a Crown, the director began a series of films that distinguished him as an excellent film chronicler of post-revolutionary Mexico, focusing on the soul of working-class characters and the development of urban society. In 1991, he received the Golden Ariel and the Salvador Toscano Medal for his professional achievements.
