Skunk (2023)

Engels The Dutch and Belgians came up with a very strong coffee. They have made a film that will make you uncomfortable!! Here we have another film on the theme of the failure of the system, where a young boy ends up in a correctional facility and in flashbacks we see the terror he experienced at home because his parents were the epitome of evil. His father was a junkie and a first-class asshole and his mother was a hooker and an unbelievable bitch, this will blow your mind like never before! Unfortunately, the boy won't get a break even in the correctional facility, because bullying awaits him there as well. A tough film that isn't afraid of explicit scenes. The whole thing leads to an intense and shocking climax that will make your chin drop. A heavy psychological load, weaker characters will definitely not feel good and parents will not feel good at all. 8/10.

Die Alone (2024)

Engels An enjoyable zombie horror drama that didn't entice me at first, but it has a fairly decent 59% rating (we all know how horror movies have it harder), so I gave it a shot and ended up satisfied. A young man suffers from amnesia in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and is looking for his girlfriend. It's pretty minimalistic, without many characters or zombies flashing by, but when the zombies do show up, it looks perfect. It has a The Last of Us vibe, there are some surprises, it's entertaining and suspenseful (though the gore is missing), so all in all a very enjoyable zombie one-off that shouldn't offend. 65%

Transformers One (2024)

Engels Nice surprise. Yes, it's an animated romp with robots for kids, but sometimes it's not bad to put yourself in the shoes of a little boy. It's got nice visuals, good jokes, and solid action. The finale is pretty decently epic and I was pleased to see Keegan Michael Key doing the voice acting for Bumblebee, that iconic voice of his always puts a smile on my face. Cute, action packed, funny and entertaining. 7/10.

Woman of the Hour (2023)

Engels I wasn't too keen on it at first, afraid of a boring conversational drama, but I was surprised at how drawn into the story I ended up being. Anna Kendrick is a sweetheart and her debut as a director is enjoyable. This is the first time I've heard the name Rodney Alcala and I was intrigued by this notorious killer of women. On the surface a sleazeball, on the other hand a highly intelligent guy who knows how to choose his words to put women in mute awe and since there were 130 of them, it's clear that there aer plenty of sapiosexuals among us. Too bad it's not very chilling or dark, it's kind of cute, like Anna. That is insufficient given the subject matter, but no one expected another Zodiac anyway. The finale in the parking lot is thrilling. Entertaining, but could have been edgier. 65%

Don't Move (2024)

Engels Nothing groundbreaking, but a watchable and inoffensive thriller that would have been more successful in the 90s. The female lead is pretty, there’s good nutter on the other side, an interesting idea about paralyzing the victim and it's quite suspenseful. Unfortunately, though, this is not enough for a higher rating. It flows nicely thanks to the short running time. 55%

Terrifier 3 (2024)

Engels Damien Leone is a filmmaker who has built a franchise from the bare minimum that already has a pretty decent fanbase and the three episodes have made decent chunk of change and hold a score of 7.0 on IMDB, which for splatter flick like this is a truly admirable rating. I'm curious to see how he will do with a new film outside the franchise. The third part is quite possibly the best of the series. It has a better budget and doesn't feel like an underfunded B-movie, but the story, the dialogue and the characters remain pretty lame, and when the art isn't rocking the set it's a bit boring; it's a shame there wasn't some humor or some more interesting characters outside of the murders so it wouldn’t drag so much. But when our beloved clown picks up a chainsaw, a hammer or an axe, things get pretty wild. The gore is top notch, it's properly intense to the point of being uncomfortable (the scene with the chainsaw in the shower is the peak for me) and the surprising body-count of kids LOL. Terrifier 3 definitely breaks genre taboos. I also liked his demonic sidekick Vicky, she was pretty creepy and has a nice 80's Christmas vibe. In terms of gore, it's probably the most entertaining thing to come out this year, but the rest of it unfortunately doesn't work enough to make me want to watch it again.

Prosta sprawa (2024) (serie)

Engels Cyprian T Olencki made one of my favourite Polish films, the brutal Furioza, so I couldn't miss his new series. As expected the Poles didn't disappoint and showed who dominates here in Europe. It’s a bit like a Polish version Jack Reacher. The protagonist escapes during a prison transport and goes to a small town to pay off a guy's debt, but the guy is missing, the local Mafia is looking for him and our protagonist accidentally gets involved and things get rough. A tough gangster series with a great Mafia boss, an ex-cop, who has everything under his thumb and has brutal wisecracks – one of the best characters of the show – but the main character is also a likable guy, he's no slouch in fights and gives everyone a good ass kicking. It's nice to see the Czech mafia getting involved. The finale is like something out of Rambo, so there's nothing to complain about. Good! 8/10.

Major Grom. Igra (2024)

Engels The sequel to the Russian comic book blockbuster is back, and it's the most expensive and biggest film from Russia this year, and it's again good. The story takes place a few years after the first one, the main character has become the hero of the city after defeating the bad guy Plague Doctor, but another supervillain is out for revenge and plans to bomb Russia with terrorist attacks. Despite the longer running time of two and a half hours, the film surprisingly doesn't get boring, it's energetic, it's has drive, the visuals are on an epic scale, the main character is a great and likable guy who also knows how to fight (the fights here are shot really well). The new bad guy on the scene is also great, more interesting than anything Marvel has ever created. The action is solid and is kept down to earth. The prison riot is great, but the confrontation with the bad guy is awesome too. The ending with the drones didn't grab me as much, but it's definitely a big event in Russia that won't get lost in the world. If you like superhero movies, you won't be disappointed. 7/10.

Chong Sheng (2024)

Engels Another decent action romp from China with a surprisingly unconventional story. The main character loses his family to drug dealers and teams up with the cops to hatch an evil plan. He changes his image and swaps with a prisoner who is about to be released, the son of a big drug syndicate. For me, an absolutely divine and fun infiltration, and Nick Cheung absolutely relishes it. The action scenes consist more of gunfights, but that brutal fight on the boat was brilliant and the shootout in the hacienda has the kind of gusto that would put even John Woo to shame. The ending delivers quite decent twist and turns that give the whole story the necessary edge. I wasn't expecting much, but I'm satisfied. 75%

The Edge of Sleep (2024) (serie)

Engels An enjoyable mystery thriller with an original idea, where sleep is the greatest enemy. Those who fall asleep die. Minimalistic and intimate with only four or five characters, but still very engaging, suspenseful and interesting. There were also horror visions with an elephant monster (it would deserve a straight horror spin-off!) and during the skull dissection I immediately thought of Saw 3. The characters were likeable, the finale with a nod to a possible sequel was also good, so for me an enjoyable film that makes do with little but holds together well thanks to a great concept. 75%
