Sick Note

Except for the first episode, Sick Note has a pleasantly short running time and an attractive (if slightly "morbid") theme. The series stands – and sometimes even limps a bit – on a merry-go-round of events, where various smaller or bigger lies and misunderstandings are glued on top of the original lie, driving the plot forward, but also delaying a resolution. (If there is no 3rd season, there will be no resolution because of the open ending of the 2nd season.) The funny side of the series was mainly handled by the supremely clumsy Nick Frost, whose clumsiness became slightly irritating in later episodes; I was also impressed by Lindsay Lohan as the cold-hearted gorilla mom and Daniel Rigby as a cop morbidly passionate about the case. All in all, I would rate the whole series a better three stars. (01.08.2023)

Season 1 offers a series of unfortunate events and the subsequent masking of their consequences wrapped in a comedic crime coat. As a miniseries, it would be okay, but already in the first season, it seems to me that there is not much to develop so that it does not appear clichéd later on. Sick Note offers a certain form of dark humor and drama. However, when it comes to humor, it's not such a blast by British standards. I definitely expected more scenes that would make me laugh. Even Nick Frost and his extremely dim character didn't really win me over, and I rather classify this series into those purely average waters. Nothing that would blow my mind. But it's sufficient for killing time on Netflix.Season 2 has a very similar quality to the previous one, and the creators try to give it maybe a little bigger dimension and more dramatic momentum. However, several episodes are really boring, so Sick Note still hasn't crossed the line of mediocrity upward. The supporting characters here seem like necessary filler to the story, so even the second season left me rather cold. (07.02.2021)
