Bad Black

I promise you have never seen a film like this before: the story of a doctor (producer Alan Hofmanis) working in the Central African nation of Uganda, trained as an assassin by a child named Wesley Snipes, who helps him take on the ghetto's toughest gang. Shot in Wakaliga - christened "Wakaliwood" - a slum on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital city of Kampala, BAD BLACK is DIY filmmaking defined - a kind of cross between Birdemic and El Mariachi, and filled with car chases, prison riots, CGI explosions, epic martial arts battles, and all shot on a glorious budget of $200. The film is narrated in Ugandan oral-storytelling tradition by a madcap voice-over that is as self-deprecating to the film (think Mystery Science Theater 3000) as it is helpful in deciphering the plot. BAD BLACK is a revolution of insane idiosyncrasy mixed with a blinding love for American blockbuster cinema. It's a testament to picking up a camera and following your passion no matter how much money you have or where in the world you live. (Florida Film Festival)
