Savaged is exactly the type of horror I watch horror movies for. This is the biggest indie smash of recent times!! From the 5 minute mark the film kicks into high gear and the carnage is on its way! I commend the perfect choice of bad guys (especially the charismatic dude with long hair and his likable cutlass), one of the best soundtracks in recent times and the excellent makeup work. The gore is at a very high level! The only let down is the toned-down rape, but great satisfaction nonetheless. Side effects when watching: Sweaty ass, bitten nails, heart attack, wrinkles, graying, epileptic seizure, rapid heartbeat or collapse. Above average within the subgenre. ()
I’m really unsure about how to rate this film. Every effective moment is followed by an unintentionally funny to embarrassing one, so at times I felt that two stars would be fair. But it does have a pretty unique atmosphere and an original “face”, which is not something very common today. It looks like something from the 1970s (the mobile phones felt out of place from the beginning) and its poetry is quite similar to Rob Zombie’s first movie. Really, these days when we are being force-fed one forgettable horror movie after another, I don’t feel like being too hard on this one (even though it’s not very much my cup of tea). So, the result is three stars. But believe it or not, I even considered a fourth start for a moment, but for a completely different reason than the other enthusiastic users. Gore, blood, violence, blah, blah, blah, that’s fine, but what else? What I did like about the film were those few moments of interaction between the (half)dead leading female and her boyfriend who’s looking for her. Those three scenes (phone, motel, grave) had an unexpected emotional depth that, among other things, are proof that this film wanted to be something more than a simple, grindhouse splatter-fest to please only the bloodthirsty, and it could have done it. Such a shame. ()
No, this was a very pleasant surprise. In essence, I didn't know anything about the film, and sometimes it pays off not to delve too deeply into the story. Because then it could happen that our jaw drops all the way to the keyboard, as happened to me with Savaged. There are really a lot of subgenres mixed in here. First, it plays with the rape-revenge style, then pure exploitation, and then it starts mixing in sci-fi, indie, and who knows what else. The plot basically doesn't stop for a minute, it keeps going and going, and on a large scale. There really is everything here, action, gore, love, emotions. All nicely mixed in small doses. What surprised me the most was probably the totally unexpected, original theme. I like tasting these new varieties because I haven't seen anything so diverse in a long time. And considering that Mr. Ojeda doesn't have much filmed stuff, it's evident that as a child, he probably had enough with his imagination. Bravo. ()
With its dirty visuals, well-chosen cast, an effective love story and some juicy splatter bits, Avenged is a crazy but superbly executed bit of B-movie revenge exploitation. Miraculously, the some of its parts works rather well. If it had better technical execution and a more stellar cast, it would overshadow both Grindhouse features by Tarantino and Rodriguez! ()
