Global superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt team up for the action comedy Wolfs. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. Action? Thriller? Comedy? Maybe, but first and foremost, Wolves is a prime example of the "let's milk the streaming platform" genre. I think that was the primary motive of everyone involved. Fat checks paid, minimum required, done, moving on. ()
The director of the SpiderMan films tried something different and got two charismatic actors, but he needed a better script and more drive. The first 40 minutes are excellent, with Brad PItt and George Clooney having a nice verbal showdown that is surprisingly funny. But the second half is considerably weaker and and the initial satisfied impression falls a bit, slightly remedied by the more action-packed ending, but I won't scrape to a higher rating. Nice likeable fun, inoffensive. 6/10. ()
A whole lot of nothing. It’s a shame that the screenplay for Wolves wasn’t written by Shane Black or Quentin Tarantino, or anyone who can write a funny line and enrich the dialogue with something meaningful. It's okay to avoid suspense and action when you have something to say, and yes, it can be something as banal as putting mayonnaise on your fries instead of ketchup like in Amsterdam. George Clooney and Brad Pitt have nothing to work with and their flat undeveloped characters offer nothing apart from a bit of slapstick, or rather the script throws them a bone only in the last scene, in the style of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Jon Watts got his paycheck and made true his dream to make a film with two ace actors, while Apple, as well as the audience, were left crying. ()
Based on the first reactions, I suspected that it would have a lukewarm reception, and I fully understand that. However, I suffer from these genres, and even though the humor didn't sit well with me in the first half of the movie, I actually enjoyed most of the film. I am glad that it's only available for streaming because Wolves are the type of film that you don't go to the cinema for anymore, and I don't need the big screen for it myself; I enjoy it more at home. It is true that without the talented Jon Watts having two directorial aces at his disposal, it would have been difficult for him to work on his authorial project. Brad Pitt and George Clooney still remind us of the times twenty years ago when their charisma captivated not only women. Even though Clooney has mainly been making films in recent years with an aging hero, he still does it very well here... even though his back is not what it used to be. The trial period of Apple TV+ is definitely worth it. ()
Some might argue that this result is a total disappointment when you manage to pack such charismatic individuals, like Brad Pitt and George Clooney, into one film, and yet it ends up being quite average. However, I had fun with it. Yes, Jon Watts is truly not among the groundbreaking directors; he's typical through and through (which unfortunately shows to the audience), but the duo carries the film. And they do it quite well. The chemistry between them works; their banter occasionally creates some truly excellent moments that made me laugh heartily. It’s a bit disappointing that the film doesn’t strive to come up with a storyline that could shock the audience. In that respect, it loses some points. But the action-packed ending was entertaining, and the nod to a potential sequel worked too. Why not? I like this duo. I give it 6.5/10. ()
