As the daughter of a prostitute, flower-seller María Candelaria (Dolores del Río) is an outcast in her village - except in the eyes of Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendáriz). But they are too poor to get married. Mexican filmmaker Emilio Fernández’s 1943 melodrama follows the couple as they endure the trials and tribulations of life in a prejudicial and greedy world. A charmingly naïve and, at the same time, sweet celebration of a woman-martyr (look for La Malinche behind it all). The mythical nature of the narrative is made clear from the opening scene, when we first see a sculpture and painting. And the painter retells what is said rather than the actual events – it is clear that he wasn’t present at many of the events that we see in “his” flashback. Some of the acting performances (the restless “I need to kick something” Don Damian) and narrative motifs (piglets instead of a baby) may seem comical, but the film as a whole is surprisingly coherent and non-comically lyrical, and it is elevated to a higher artistic level than an ordinary melodrama by Gabriel Figueroa’s excellent camerawork strongly influence by Eisenstein (fires!). 80% ()
