After working himself up from desk clerk to assistant director, Walter Lang quickly established himself as a Hollywood director in the early sound era, finding his niche in the 1940s helming lavish Technicolor musicals like Moon Over Miami (1941) and Coney Island (1943). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his work on The King and I (1957).
