This Swedish homage to Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead is a bloody, scary tale of demonic possession. A group of naive young people find their carefree weekend in an isolated country house unhinged when one of them accidentally unleashes a mysterious and murderous creature trapped in the basement. As the demon begins to attack the couples, the blood-dredged body count mounts and with it, more creatures out for a taste of human flesh, freshly killed. The dazed young men and women soon mount their own desperate counter-attack, an attack that includes decapitations, dismemberment, spurting blood, flailing axes and the kind of gore one does associate with Swedish cinema! anglais I don’t believe Wither had a “small” budget; quite the contrary, in fact. Considering how incompetently amateurish the creators are, the budget was actually too much – at least the gore looks fine and, visually, it manages to conjure a bit of atmosphere at times (the minimalistic story in an old cabin in the woods and the rainy weather also do their job). In all the rest, however, the movie doesn’t hit anything. Firstly, zero creativity, it’s a rip-off of Evil Dead that clearly tries to ride on the likely success of the official remake. Secondly, it’s ruined in post-production – bad editing, mainly – and as a result, it has not even a hint of tension or atmosphere (with the exception of the first scene in the cellar, when the first girl is possessed), and the violent scenes aren’t even intense. In the official remake of Evil Dead, every cut, stab and slash was physically painful, Wither in this regard had absolutely no effect; the gore and the blood are just there, without any feeling of repulsion or disgust. Thirdly, the very bad actors. Once again, I could compare it with the Evil Dead remake, but that would be unfair because that’s another league when it comes to production. But even if you compare it with other indie horror movies, the actors here are really weak. In some way, I feel sorry for how the film turned out, you can see the enthusiasm of a fan. In short: Wither feels as if a fan of Evil Dead had tried to make a homage, in today’s conditions and with money that’s proportional to the budget of the original; unfortunately, however, with about a tenth of the talent and creativity of Sam Raimi. Cringe is the only thing I can feel as a result. ()

anglais Wither is a decent average that you'd get in this area if there weren't other films essentially with the same style. Evil Dead screams from this film so much it's not even nice. There's nothing original here, and I'll admit, I tend to expect something slightly original because otherwise, I wouldn't enjoy watching various films and feeling like they're all exactly the same. That's why I rate it worse than average. ()

anglais Here it is just a matter of necessity and I really felt like something bloody according to the gallery. It might not be that terrible. The effects are great, masks too, the setting is cool, gore is a delight. But the characters shouldn't behave like brainwashed idiots with the IQ of a squash. God, how I would tear my hair out for this. I can appreciate everything, but when the script is idiotic, I am uncompromising. Anyway, anyone who wants to instantly satisfy themselves with some brainless bloody slaughter will be pleased. ()
