This was a massive stress test for my habit of not turning off (apparently) good films because of an irrelevant feeling of boredom. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. This time, unfortunately, I regretted it because A Tale of Two Sisters didn’t satisfy me in any aspect. I don’t mind intricate films, provided the plot is also intricate, what I don’t like is nonsense that pretends to be interesting with non-traditional and almost indecipherable narrative techniques. That’s not genius, that’s posing. Disappointment, I liked the bland American remake a lot more . ()
One of the better Korean horror dramas. It's a bit of a mind game, overwhelmed by a big pile of emotions. But as I always say, Koreans have their own filmmaking style, and it's not always a bullseye. I had seen the American version much earlier, and I found out about its connection to this film just a short while before the screening, so it wasn't such a big surprise for me. The remake was indeed easier to understand, the story was overall trivial and easier to digest, but I personally preferred the Korean version more. It was a big tangle, and Koreans intentionally like to do it this way. I have seen quite a lot of their productions, and it's been a while since I liked something like this. The only thing that bothered me there was probably the head of the family. I really didn't believe a word from that gray-haired dad. ()
