I was curious to see what a movie following the series would be like, but I’m mostly disappointed. The filmmakers made the same mistakes that bothered me in the series. Maybe the Finnish police operate on different principles from those that are standard in Europe, but I think it was more likely caused by holes in the logic. I found the episodes featuring Sorjonen's nemesis to be the weakest, so I didn’t appreciate Mastermind’s comeback. Sadly, this wasn't an isolated problem; entire events were repeated (albeit slightly altered), making me silently scream "Not again!" But seriously, in Katia's case, suicide seems to be the only realistic and humane way out. Plus, what a rip-off of The Silence of the Lambs... ()
The Finns made their own version of Silence of the Lambs! The film is supposedly a sequel to the 2016 series, so those familiar with it will find it better. The plot is a bit confusing, slower and not that engaging, but on the other hand there are some solid moments and some decent ideas, so it's definitely worth a watch. The very idea of a poll about which people the world would be better off without is remarkable, the bad guy is great, the atmosphere is grim, there are plenty of murders, and there is one solid tactical shootout on a bridge against a special forces unit that got me out of my chair quite a bit. It may have lacked a stronger final twist or a more entertaining pace throughout, so just a cautious thumbs up for me, but crime fans should definitely give it a go.
