Warre and Tine have long wanted to have a child of their own. Their dream comes true one day when Warre is out birdwatching and something suddenly falls out of the sky and lands directly in front of him. The bundle looks like a new-born baby girl – except, where little girls usually have arms this baby appears to have a pair of wings! Warre takes the tiny bundle home where Tine is overjoyed at her husband's find and decides to call the pretty creature 'Birdie'.
From this moment on, she does everything she can to raise Birdie just like any other normal little girl. But Birdie is not a normal little girl and, one fine day, Birdie takes to the air and flies away south.
Bereft, Tine sets off with Warre to find their little one. Their search takes them over many a mountain until they finally reach the sea. Warre is convinced that they should go home – after all, it's not natural to keep a bird as a child. But then, all of a sudden, they find Birdie! A storm has swept her into the water where she is struggling to keep afloat. Warre and Tine courageously leap into waves and save Birdie from drowning.
At first Tine is blissfully happy to have her little girl back again, but she soon realises that Birdie longs to take to the skies. She is forced to agree with Warre: you can't keep someone like Birdie – except perhaps in your memory ...
