Biography

He was a film critic for the magazine Primer Plano and the newspaper Pueblo. He began his career as a screenwriter for Vidas cruzadas (1942), by Luis Marquina. His first work in direction was as assistant to Rafael Gil. His directorial debut was in 1946, with Senda ignorada, followed by Angustia (1947) and Llegada de noche (1949). His films seemed to be tending towards the detective genre when his next movie, Balarrasa (1950), moved into new territory and enjoyed considerable success with the public. This allowed him to shoot what is now considered his greatest work, Surcos (1951), a landmark in the history of Spanish cinema.
