It's the 1970s and the salsa revolution is in full swing. Hector Lavoe (Anthony), is the singer, El Cantante whose voice can move millions and whose passion moves one woman, his wife Puchi (Lopez). But when the spotlight brings Lavoe's personal demons and addictions to light, it will take the incredible devotion of his wife to put him on the path to becoming the legend he was born to be. A pretty standard biopic about a legendary figure in Puerto Rican music. The cast does a solid job, though Jennifer Lopez didn’t really impress me. Marc Anthony, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise—he really gave it his all and is easily the best part of the film. The salsa vibe didn’t quite click for me, and the story felt formulaic and lacking in emotional depth. When I compare it to other music biopics like Walk the Line, this one just falls into the “average” category for me. ()
