In Ingmar Bergman's first produced screenplay, the dark coming-of-age drama Torment, Widgren, a boarding-school senior, is terrorized by his sadistic Latin teacher. When he falls for Bertha, a troubled local girl, he finds himself caught up even further in a web of emotional mind games. (official distributor synopsis)

Ingmar Bergman simply proved his mastery at the beginning of his career and showed what potential he has "only" with the screenplay he wrote for the film Torment. Even though you might feel for a moment that it's something like School Is the Foundation of Life, the film is of a completely different genre, yet it's not a classic thriller, which would be the first impression.
