Young Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brien) is a lonely 11-year-old boy who escapes from his bleak reality by watching the action-adventure movies of his favourite film character, Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). When his best friend, Nick the projectionist, gives him a special ticket to the new Slater film, Danny is magically transported into Jack's world, where the good guys always win. Danny becomes his helper as Jack battles a trio of nefarious bad guys, Benedict (Charles Dance), Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn) and The Ripper (Tom Noonan). But things get out of hand when Benedict steals Danny's magic ticket stub and transports himself into the real world, where crime can, and often does, pay. Jack and Danny must leave fictional Los Angeles for real-life New York and battle the villains without the aid of movie magic or stuntmen. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

The Last Action Hero is not funny enough for a comedy and not action-packed enough for an action movie. If this film had any potential, the filmmakers drowned it in an exorbitant running time. There are some good scenes, but far from enough in those more than two hours. ()
A similar commercial and narrative romp as True Lies would be one year later, just a class worse entertainment. This film really shows that no expense was spared, it has lavish production design, a great cast, thrilling explosions, fancy locations (the Hyatt) and grand action. But it arrived at the cinemas at the wrong time (competition) and it is not as entertaining, thrilling, and original as it may seem, so it became a relative failure that didn't catch on as expected. Although the director is a master of action films, he always falls a bit short when it comes to intimacy and personal connections among characters, and once the shooting stops, it's quite boring. There are several excellent jokes, quips, and scenes, and a surprisingly good Arnold, but otherwise it’s too long and quite creaky. ()
Once upon a time, I really loved this film, and years later, when I finally got to watch it again, I must admit that nothing has changed about my liking for it. It's still a great film, with excellent humor, mainly connected to Arnold making fun of himself. And it works. And so do the action scenes. ()
