In the story evoking the heroic era of Hungarian acting a company of strolling players arrives in Balatonfüred, where the foster-daughter of professor Szilvay and her nurse are taking their holiday. Mariska and Liliomfi, the celebrated actor, in reality the nephew of professor Szilvay, fall in love with each other despite all the odds and prejudices. They do not even know that the professor has long destined them for each other, even though he never suspected that they would meet. The condition of marriage is for Liliomfi to abandon acting. The lovers play a trick on devout hypocrisy, greediness and tyranny by charm and they set off together as the servants of Thalia. (official distributor synopsis)
