When you become both a recipient and a giver of affection and trust, the transition from Silver Surfer to the Venetian merchant becomes much easier. A classic story of mutual enrichment among life's outsiders, in which debutant Mel Gibson doesn't push the caricature or pathos too hard. In fact, he doesn't even pressure the aspect of the literary source that suggests that the relationship between the brat and the meatball may not be just about innocent friendship. However, he extracted the maximum from Nick Stahl, and Mel, as a half-Michael Myers, makes you forget about the pretty-boy charm of Lethal Weapon. Actually, even the other supporting characters fade into the background. ()
A likeable directorial debut. Mel Gibson doesn’t show off, he tells the story economically and does it well. He’s great as the sensitive “monster”, and so is the kid in the main role. A very beautiful story. ()
