Set in a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee in the 1960s, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as "a child of God much like yourself perhaps." Ballard's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Consecutively deprived of parents and housing and driven by famished loneliness, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation. James Franco made a totally psycho movie. It’s something many people are afraid to talk about. And he did more-or-less a good job, even though there are many dull and meaningless moments in this movie. Anyways, Scott Haze was a good choice. I don’t know if James had seen him before in something similar to this movie, but he couldn’t have made a better or worse choice. It’s thanks to him that this movie is worth remembering. ()
