The poor and talented student and the daughter of the éjhely mayor fall in love with each other. But because of the social gap they have to part. By the time Miklós returns to éjhely as a successful doctor, Éva has been a married woman and the mother of two children. Although her old sentiment has not changed, she does not cast off her duties as a wife and mother. They both have greying hair when they meet again.
