22 of the Strangest Genetic Traits That Run in People’s Families

Some people hit the genetic lottery and grow into a full head of hair, an above-average stature and skin that glows with just water and the cheapest of face wash. Others are less fortunate and get stuck with a busted set of teeth and a bald spot so big that they never stood a chance. Then there are those whose hereditary traits are neither curse nor blessing, but a secret third thing. Seriously, how do you categorize being born with two extra kidneys?

Redditors have shared their weirdest genetic anomalies, and the fucked-up family traits run the gamut from an onion allergy that developed once they hit 40, to a family that still had some of their baby teeth well into their 60s.

missdanz 8y ago When my son was born I noticed that his ears stuck out quite a bit. Not ridiculously, but enough that I wondered where that trait came from. My ears don't do that at all, and neither did my ex-husband's. One day I mentioned it to him, and half-joked whether the mailman had ears that stuck out like that. Turns out, his ears used to stick out quite far, and at a young age his mother got them pinned back via cosmetic surgery. This was my first time hearing about this...talk about false advertising. + 1.2K ...
swentech 0 8y ago This is a bad one from me. I have a beautiful little 10 year old daughter in every way. Very smart, funny, and nice looking girl. Unfortunately every couple of weeks she has to cut nose hairs which are growing too long. I guess I got to take the blame for this one... + 777 ...
gr8spacegrl 0 3y ago Certain sounds make myself myself and my dad... .. and now my daughter cry, like tones in songs. My mom,son and I have very asymmetric features 12 ...
Deepfried_Alekhine . 3y ago The men on my father's side have a small patch of hair on our lower backs. We all act like a bunch of apes, so it fits. 16 ...
GingerMau 3y ago I married into a bloodline that has excessive, wet earwax. Like, my husband's paternal grandmother went deaf from too much wax because she didn't want anyone messing with her ears. I realized my son got the gene when I pulled a pea-sized ball of black earwax out of his ear AT AGE 3. I've never had that much wax in my ear in 35 years of living. A 3 year-old should not make that kind of earwax. 30 ...
Itszednotzeee 3y ago My sisters and I all have a laugh that sounds like a cackle. When we are in fits of laughter together it sounds like a cacophony of witches. 34 ...
echo6969 3y ago We have short flat thumbs with nails about half an inch wide. It looks like someone smashed them with a hammer. There's a name for this but I can't remember it. My grandmother and both my parents had them, I have them, and much to her dismay, my daughter has them. Waiting to see if any of the grandkids will have them. + 63 ...
Inner-Nothing7779 3y ago The men go gray or white haired in our 20's. My mother's mother's father (great grandfather) was white haired by the time he was 30. May have had something to do with WWII, but I'm not entirely sure. His son never grew old enough for it to happen as he was killed in 1969 in Vietnam. I'm the only one of his great grandsons that gained this trait. 64 ...
Tassiebarwench e 3y ago When we need to pee we start to shiver. Runs in my maternal family. Great grandmother, grandmother, mother, me, brother and my kids. My grandfather and father thought it was hysterically funny. Makes toilet training a hell of a lot easier though. + 108 ...

TheSchoeMaker 3y ago Not super weird but a trait coming from my dad's side of the family is that we all have long index toes( or pointer toe?) that go passed our big toe. Dad and his siblings have it, me and my siblings have, and now my son has it 317 ...

Foxien 3y ago None of us can sleep on full moon nights. It's like clockwork. I remember walking into the living room as a kid to see my mom still awake in the middle of the night. She told me that she did the same thing with her father when she was a little girl, and he just made her hot cocoa and they chatted until they felt they could rest. Apparently my brothers and their children also do it. My niece asked me about it one night, so I made her hot cocoa and we chatted until we could
Ok_Fine_8680 3y ago Third nipple. My husband's brother has one and 2 of my kids have it as well. One of my kids thinks it's like a cool party trick and would show everyone on the playground. Не was disappointed to find out that other kids didn't think it was as cool as he did. + 2.3K ...
I_hate_Swansea 3y ago I have one slightly pointed ear, my grandfather had it too, and apparently his grandfather. So we have an elf ear that runs in the family that skips a generation. Also none of my siblings or cousins have it so it hits one person every other generation... weird. + 2.7K ...
ParaTodoMalMezcal e 3y ago Everyone on my dad's side of the family becomes allergic to onions and garlic around age 40. I have 10 years left and then I need to do some serious research into alternative seasoning. + 4.5K ...
