As the European Arthouse Cinema Day prepares for its ninth edition on 17 November 2024, a new partnership has emerged with Sabine Verheyen, First Vice-President of the European Parliament, taking on the role of patron. Verheyen, a staunch advocate for cultural diversity and media policy, expressed her enthusiasm in a video message, underscoring the vital role of cinema in shaping democratic values and fostering intercultural dialogue.
The European Arthouse Cinema Day, which has grown steadily over its eight editions, is also dubbed the Global Day of Action for Democracy, Diversity and European Film Culture. With more than 400,000 viewers across 700 cinemas in 42 countries to date, the event is a vibrant celebration of European cinema, featuring screenings and special events aimed at highlighting the diversity and creativity of the continent's film landscape. Interested cinemas can register here.
In her statement, Verheyen emphasised the unique role of cinema in promoting understanding and social progress, especially in today's complex socio-political environment.
“It is a great honour for me to be the patron of the ninth European Cinema Day, which will be celebrated on 17 November 2024. This year's theme, “Democracy and Diversity”, is of particular importance as it reflects the critical role that cinema plays in promoting tolerance, supporting open dialogue, and fostering intercultural exchange. Film and cinema are not just entertainment, but reflect our society and culture, shaping and influencing how we see others and ourselves. It helps us to preserve our cultural heritage while promoting innovation and social progress. I look forward to the many powerful stories that will be told on this day, and I encourage everyone to join us in celebrating cinema's unique ability to bring people together,” said Verheyen.
As First Vice-President of the European Parliament, Verheyen's responsibilities include fostering communication with the public and supporting initiatives such as the LUX European Audience Film Award.
The 2024 European Arthouse Cinema Day will once again showcase a wide array of films that reflect Europe's rich cultural tapestry, while addressing critical themes such as democracy, identity and diversity. The celebration is more than a day for cinephiles; it's a global reminder of cinema's power to connect people and inspire change.
