Café Society to open Cannes
- Woody Allen’s film, which stars such names as Steve Carell, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, will open the 69th Cannes Film Festival out of competition
The 69th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (11-22 May 2016) will be opened out of competition by Café Society, directed by renowned US filmmaker Woody Allen. The cast includes Steve Carell, Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Parker Posey and Blake Lively, and the film tells the story of a young man who heads to Hollywood in the 1930s hoping to find work in the film industry. He then falls in love and finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age.
Interestingly, this constitutes the 14th selection out of competition at Cannes for Woody Allen since Manhattan in 1979, and we should note that Italy’s Vittorio Storaro served as DoP on Café Society. The feature, which was entirely produced by the United States, will come out in French theatres the same day as it opens Cannes, distributed by Mars Distribution.
