A Call of Cthulhu nightmare beyond signal range!

Alex and Charlie believe that a secluded weekend getaway in the Black Hills of South Dakota is just what they need to reinvigorate their marriage—but older and darker things than broken hearts exist in the forgotten places of the world.

Will they survive, alone against the static?

What's Inside

Alone Against The Static is a modern-era scenario. It is designed for use with either the Call of Cthulhu Keeper Rulebook or the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set.

Solo Call of Cthulhu in the 1990s

A framed copy of Alex and Charlie in a romantic embrace from their wedding

Set in the Dakota Black Hills in the early 1990s, Alone Against The Static is designed for a single player—no Keeper required! You will choose to play as either Alex or Charlie, each of which have their own strengths, weaknesses, and choices to make. No two playthroughs will be the same!

Brand-New Solo Mechanics

A Stranger Entering a Cabin

Alone Against The Static introduces The Log Sheet to the world of solo Call of Cthulhu play. Track choices you make, secrets you discover, and items you’ll find that aid (or hinder) your adventure with a separate sheet designed with spoiler-free text.

The Log Sheet can also be used as a list of achievements—can you unlock everything there is to discover?

Two people with Flashlights

A New Entry into the Cthulhu Mythos

A strange woman offering a hand

Included in Alone Against The Static is a new Mythos entity, detailed for use in your own Call of Cthulhu scenarios. You can expand the experience beyond solo play by taking this entity into scenarios of your own making, perhaps even using Alone Against The Static as a prelude for your players.

What The Critics Say

  • "I also have to confess that it is the first time that one of these books makes me feel something similar to real fear, there are decisions that make you feel nervous, excited and a sense of danger."

    — Tristan Oberon, Whispers from Darkness, Alone Against the Static: Review.

  • "Unsettling and immersive, with clever nods to modern horror tropes: TV static, found footage..."

    — El Runeblogger, Alone Against the Static for Call of Cthulhu - A review.

  • "replay value is high... (it) feels like a 90s horror movie. The isolated quiet of the Black Hills, a remote rundown cabin, a collection of creepy video tapes, and a VCR with a mind of its own will all feel familiar to players of a certain age... players will no doubt find themselves desperately flipping pages as their doom unspools before them time and time again."

    — The Gaming Gang, Shocking!!! Alone Against the Static Reviewed.

  • “A great addition for anyone looking for an awesome horror experience. It contains a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing what’s going to happen next. And the support provided in terms of resource packs and character checklist make this excellent for both experienced and new players alike."

    — Stygian Muse, Alone Against The Static: Into the Black Hills.

  • "Alone Against The Static is unsettling (in a good way) and really captured that Blair Witch Project/American Horror Story: Roanoke-style 'lost in the woods' horror vibe."

    — Royce Wilson, Phasr, TTRPG REVIEW: ALONE AGAINST THE STATIC.

  • “Alone Against the Static is the best Call of Cthulhu solo adventure I’ve played… [It] creeps me out… The theme of static noise is elegantly revisited again and again, this uncertainty slowly seeps into your consciousness, I don’t know what’s going on here, but I don’t like it. This feeling becomes denser and lasts so long it’s a joy.”

    This is it! Finally!

Posted by James Davis on 13th May 2024

Chaosium has always done a great job on the "Alone Against" series of solo adventures. This one raises the bar quite a bit as this series finally got the boost to not only hardcover but artwork and page treatment like any other quality Chaosium product (nobody better in the RPG industry!). Thanks for continuing the fantastic forward momentum of the Cthulhu line. The adventure is really good as well but didn't you already know this?? It is after all "Alone Against" the mythos. Scary huh?

    The Best Alone Against Yet

This is a great adventure and an amazing story. I've enjoyed several of the Alone Against modules, but this one hurt me... In a good way.
