Bush Pilots: Canada's Wilderness Daredevils (Legends) Paperback – July 23, 2004

It takes a special recipe--one part courage, one part skill, a big dash of crazy--to make a bush pilot. These unique aviators, flying over the vast wildernesses of the United States, Canada and Australia, often reach the status of legends. In this book, Peter Boer looks at famous Canadian bush pilots, many of them former fighter pilots of the Second World War. These brave young men and women took to the skies to bring food, medicines and mail to isolated Canadian communities. The names of men such as Wop May and Punch Dickins are synonymous with courage in the face of hardship. The remarkable stories of May and Dickins, as well as those of Doc Oaks, Fred Stevenson, James Caldwell, Chuck McAvoy, Vi Milstead, Con Farrell and many others, are told in this entertaining collection.

This is a wonderful read for anyone who finds aviation history exciting especially the birth of Canada's. Wop May and Punch Dickens are just a few of the pilots you will read about. You will get to visualize their adrenaline packed flights all over the Canadian Shield. It took a different breed back then to jump into an airplane and head out into the remote wilderness.

Don't order this book. It's misleading. Talks about pilots from the 30's, not the modern era. The merchant also has poor customer service skills in handling returns. Save your money.

If you like adventure regardless of your interest in airplanes, then this is a great adventure read, and insight into the early days of flying in the Canadian wilderness. It is an easy read, even though I had not ever heard of these famous pilots. I couldn't put it down, as the author, somehow inserted me into the past. I traveled along with Wop May and other bush plane pioneers on harrowing flights, and sometime escapades of their adventures. A great gift for a pilot or airplane enthusiast as my wife found it to be for me.
