Our Children, Our Teachers Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Children are often our greatest teachers, but what happens if the lesson is too heavy to hold? In OUR CHILDREN, OUR TEACHERS, a standalone novelette by Michael Bailey, Bram Stoker Award winning editor of THE LIBRARY OF THE DEAD, a high school is taken hostage by a gathering of unlikely students trying to teach the world a new lesson ... a foreshadowing, perhaps, to darker times ahead for the American education system, if gun control is not addressed properly.

Michael Bailey’s short novel, OUR CHILDREN, OUR TEACHERS, packs a big punch. Gripping and poignant, it starts with a literal bang and doesn’t let up until the end. Brendon High School, in rural Washington state, is under a lockdown. This is not a drill. Shots have been fired and the principal might be dead. Through Bailey’s precise, no-nonsense prose, the terror the students face over the ensuing hours comes alive. Who is dead? Who’s next? And who exactly is the killer? Or is it killers? Yet beneath this intense crime drama exists a subtext that forces the reader to question the issues of gun-control, social media, and the future of education.A nerve-wracking treat. I highly recommend.

I gave this three stars for being well written but the ridiculousness of the plot totally ruined the story for me. A missed opportunity to make a strong statement.

This is a powerful novella by writer and publisher Michael Bailey, who has been a major contributor to the dark fiction/horror genre for the last several years. The prose is sparse, tight, and delivers a swift kick at the end. A group of students who take over a high school by armed force starts out to sound like another Columbine themed story, but turns into something far more unexpected. Do yourselves a favor and check this one out. Dedicated to the late Jack Ketchum, you will hear echoes of his voice within the voice of a great writer.

This novelette is dedicated to the late Dallas Mayr (a.k.a. Jack Ketchum), and it does his memory proud! This story is stripped down to its essentials, emotionally resonant, and propulsive. Most of all, it's timely and deeply resonant--like the echo of a gunshot. Bailey's influences are showing, and he's living up to them. This one is a must read!

This was my first Michael Bailey novel and I read it straight through! It is captivating in its style and incredibly surprising in its conclusion. I look forward to other works by this author.

I read this in the aftermath of the massacre at Uvalde Elementary School. So many deaths.
This short story strikes at the inherent complacency of school shootings in America.
My heart sank as I read, at the ease of access to guns. Yes, I realise this is a story, but in reality, it is not fiction, it is horrifying fact day after day after day.
The ending will subdue you, as it should. Well worth a read.

This is an extraordinary short novel/novella, and I don't dispense such praise lightly. It is tight book, all lean, no fat, that cuts right to the beating hearts of the characters the community they live in. It is unflinching in its portrayal of events that are as horrific as they are sadly commonplace. And it does so as a wholly convincing work of fiction-- the twist ending is as unguessable as it is perfect.

Sparse, tight, and brutal, I read this novella in the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and the resonance was chilling. Topical and compelling, this raw and nail biting Michael Bailey title can be read in a single sitting. Dedicated to the late Dallas Mayr (Jack Ketchum) the dark master's voice is echoed here. A must-read.

A well thought out topical omelette. A high school goes into lockdown when gunfire is heard.

It soon becomes clear there is more than one armed person. The narrative is well paced an the change of perspective with each chapter plays out well.
