In 1980, several hundred people from FSM resided in the US, most of them hailed from Outer Island Yapese. These people were young and, mostly, educated, that were settled in United States to search work, lands and social status. In 1986 Micronesians obtained the right to live and work in United States of unlimited time, thanks to the entered into force the Compact of Free Association in FSM and the [[Island Marshalls]]. The first Micronesians that emigrated to United States were Chuukese. However, during this years, the Micronesian emigration to this country was only of a one percent a year, which was the half of volume of the current Micronesian emigration to United States.
