Edward L. Romero (born in January 2, 1934) is a entrepreneur and American diplomat that served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra in 1998. He was appointed by President Clinton ambassador from Spain on June 23, 1998, being confirmed as such by the Senate on June 23 of that year. Furthermore, on 1 June that year, the president also elected him Ambassador to Andorra. He was also one of the founders of the Hispanic Cultural Foundation and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in New Mexico. Well as of the Advanced Sciences, Inc., the Chamber of Commerce Albuquerque Hispano, the Board of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and the "Valor Telecommunications Southwest, LLC."

Biography

Romero was born on January 2, 1934 [2]in Albuquerque, New Mexico[1] or in Alamosa, Colorado[3]. His family was descended in part of the Spanish settlers who arrived to this state in 1598.[4][2][5] One of his ancestors, Bartolomé Romero, came from Corral de Almaguer, a municipality of Toledo, Castilla La Mancha, and settled in New Mexico in 1598. [4] He speaks both English and Spanish fluently[2], already that in his house always spoken Spanish.[2] He studied at Los Angeles State College and Citrus College.[2] In his youth, he fought in the Korean War.[1][2]

Interested in the environment, he founded the Advanced Sciences, Inc.[5][1][2], a corporation of environmental engineering and waste management - recently merged with Commodore Applied Technologies, Inc., a company listed on Bolsa, which is also president and director. He has been a member of the Advisory Committee on Services´s Policy U.S. Representative for International Trade, leading some U.S. delegations to Mexico.[1][2]In addition, he is also one of the founders of the Hispanic Cultural Foundation and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in New Mexico.[1][2][5] He belonged to the President's Hispanic Advisory Committee and was a founding member of the Chamber of Commerce Albuquerque Hispano and the Board of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.[1][2][5] He is also one of the founders of "Valor Telecommunications Southwest, LLC."

In 1998, the president Bill Clinton named him U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra [1][2][5] and in 2001 was replaced by George Argyros as ambassador to this country.[1] He was also member of the Federal Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations and of the U.S. Delegations on the Helsinki Accords.[6]

Romero has been active in various social works, winning numerous awards and recognitions from various organizations such as American and Spanish. [2]

Recognitions

  • In September 1989, the U.S. Small Business Administration named him Region Hispanic Businessman of the Year. Also in that same year, The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce named him National Hispanic Businessman of the Year. In 1991, he was also named in the publication “Hispanic Heroes – Portraits of New Mexicans Who Have Made a Difference,” edited by Rose Diaz and Jan Dodson Barnhart[5][1]
  • On March 21, 2001, the king of Spain awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel I of Castile. [3]

Personal life

He is married Cayetana Garcia and have four children[1][2] and eight grandchildren. [2]The ancestors of his wife also left Spain on 1898, but came from a region of Castilla y Leon.[4]
