His real name was Domingo Tomás Hernández Bethencourt y he was born in October 9, 1915 in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). Tom Hernandez, immigrated with his family to the United States when he was five. After extensive theater training in this country, he can start his way to Hollywood. [1] His characters were usually of little importance in the movies in which they appeared. However, they did have an important role in the Spanish films El reflejo del alma, Cuatro locos buscan manicomio, Fuerza mortal and Tunka, el guerrero. In the late 40's he became the character Don Diego at the annual fair Del Mar Fair in San Diego (California), appearing as master of ceremonies for the annual meeting (since 1947 until his death in 1984). In the beauty contest of this show came out, among others, a girl named Raquel Tejada, better known as Raquel Welch. [2] In honor of he created The Don Diego Fund, a nonprofit scholarship program of the San Diego County Fair. [3] He died in June 2, 1984 in Los Angeles, California.[4] His brother Pepe Hern was also an actor.
