Request

It would be great if you please let me know what kind of websites are very 'appropriate' to be specified as references for business topics, since government websites have very limited or no content related to new terminologies. Are International bank websites considered trustworthy? since everything they do is authorised by the government.HarishMP (talk) 12:39, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A brief commercial pitch page is not in any way acceptable. You can read through our guidelines at WP:RS. If you are unable to find reliable sources, then the material is likely not worthy of inclusion. Kuru (talk) 13:23, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Formsbank

Dear Kuru, It has come to the attention of our analytics team that our domain name is currently blacklisted on Wikipedia.org. After a thorough investigation we have found out that our hired SEO team had been posting spam-like links to parts of our website in the reference section of Wikipedia’s articles. This kind of approach is not something our company practices: the responsible employees have been suspended and as of today we have taken the necessary steps to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.

We value our brand name - our goal being to provide genuinely good content - and we accept full responsibility for this mistake.

I've read that generally WikiPedia doesn't de-list sites based on requests from site owners or representatives. But are there any steps we can take in order to be delisted?

Thank you in advance, Igor, Formsbank team.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.117.180.68 (talkcontribs)

As you note, we remove blacklisted domains only when there is a reason to do so. Most spammed domains are unlikely to have a legitimate use here, so they are seldom removed. I can't dig into this at the moment, but would be happy to look at this later today. Kuru (talk) 14:49, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I would personally like to thank you for taking the time to look into our situation.
Formsbank is an up-and-coming project with a goal to help users make their paperwork easier and we take pride in doing our best to provide quality content and good service.
We try our best to be a people-oriented and genuinely useful resource - launching our blog several weeks ago - and do hope that our efforts can help people out in some way or another. Igor, Formsbank team.

Hello again, Kuru. I'm sorry for disturbing You again. Still looking for your answer. Thanks in advance. 74.117.180.68 (talk) 14:12, 17 November 2017 (UTC)Igor.[reply]

i have some free time today, will look at it. Kuru (talk) 14:40, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
At your request, I've reviewed the activity related to this link. The link was spammed thirty-odd times from IPs in Russia, Czechoslovakia and Germany over a period of four months. The additions were intentionally deceptive; pretending in many cases to be "references" when there was nothing at the link to even support the material. Since the spamming occurred across many articles and across several IPs and warnings were ignored, the only choice was to blacklist the link. If there is something at the site which can be used as a legitimate reference, then you can request whitelisting of a specific URL at MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist. He's currently editing as Special:Contributions/95.97.85.50. I honestly don't know how to respond to his personal attacks so I thought I'd alert you. Sro23 (talk) 17:44, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, blocked - his last five IPs have been in the Netherlands. Presumably another trip. Kuru (talk) 17:50, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Answer to your message

Thanks for your message. I have no problem at all with what you have done. You got there by following up an old edit that I didn't take much notice of, since isolated IP edits from a long time ago are often irrelevant, but on this occasion it clearly wasn't. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:22, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why does a new topic need to occur for a listing that is unique in the dataset?

GoSale is the only price comparison website in the dataset to include Price Alerts, Extensions for 4 browsers, price history with graphs. No other combination exists. Why do you suppress this information, Sir? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.2.229.88 (talk) 02:51, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really care what it offers. I do care that the list has been spammed many times. Please only include additions that have existing articles and reliable sourcing. Thanks. Kuru (talk) 02:56, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Block evasion by ViamarisBalbi

Hi Kuru. Since SPI is moving at a rather slow pace, this is to let you know that ViamarisBalbi (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has been evading his block with two other socks. CalinicoFire, one of the socks, has all but confessed. Please see also Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ViamarisBalbi. Thank you. Dr. K. 17:25, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look when I get a block of time. On a quick glance, that looks pretty suspicious, but I'm not sure if it's a meatpuppet or a sock without digging through all the diffs. Kuru (talk) 02:53, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Block of time. That was a pretty good turn of phrase. :) No problem Kuru. We still have time, and in any case, there is no pressure. I just wanted to let you know because with the slow-moving SPIs this could fall under the radar. If you don't have time, don't bother. All the best. Dr. K. 03:20, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I dug through all the histories earlier; I'm pretty convinced. I added another example from commons and here that's pretty clearly sock behavior. Since you've done the bureaucratic heavy lifting of filing a check-user, I think it's best to let one look at it. I saw at least one other account that's likely the same farm and may pre-date the others. Dental metaphor incoming: I can fill the cavity, but I suspect the checkuser will be needed to do the root canal. Kuru (talk) 15:56, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much again Kuru for your advice and for taking the time to dig up the additional info about the action at Commons and also the additional sock. Thank you also for the funny metaphor, although, no warning was needed about its incoming introduction. After the block of time, I was almost certain more may be coming. Take care. :) Dr. K. 17:14, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I have nothing else to offer from a CU perspective, but that's just for the en-wiki of course. Drmies (talk) 01:59, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies:, no need. The suspicious older account I was alluding to above was Hughesshots, which you've taken care of. Thank you for the pixie dust. Kuru (talk) 03:35, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. That user is continuing to change genres without discussion or sources when saying "generalizing genres". [1][2] 183.171.180.234 (talk) 15:09, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what conversation this is following up from. The idiosyncrasies of modern pop genres is something I usually seek to avoid. Kuru (talk) 15:49, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile payment

Hello, Kuru. Thanks for pointing out the issue with external links I’ve added to the Mobile payment page. The video I reference was made in collaboration with Discover, while the content about EMV liability shift was created by Visa. I think we can both agree that those are two very credible voices in the payment industry, including on the topic of mobile payment. I believe removing those sources was a mistake, since they are both unbiased and used purely for the purpose of informing general public about recent shifts in the payment industry, which, by extension, is applicable to the subject of mobile payment. The current message above the article asks to "update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information,” and my brief update provides that. Given that circumstance, my edits are appropriate for an encyclopedia. Thank you. Payments123 (talk) 18:44, 7 December 2017 (UTC) Payments123[reply]

You've linked to a puffy youtube video uploaded by "Transnational" to pitch a product. You then linked to a corporate content marketing blog at "Transnational". You then decided that, somehow, Theroadislong's removal of you material was an invitation to link directly to the pitch page at "Transnational". I'll be more clear: do not add any more material that is not supported directly by third-part sources that meet our threshold for reliable sources. Especially cease adding links to anything to do with "Transnational." Thanks. Kuru (talk) 18:55, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

change.org

The question I am trying to source became the subject of a petition. The statement in the article was that Kyle Kulinski was a Left-Libertarian and it is getting criticized because it was sourced to a youtube video posted by the subject, a primary source. The premise of the petition was that he was the best at representing that point of view . . . obviously meaning he has it as supported by the signators. change.org/p/joe-rogan-get-kyle-kulinski-from-secular-talk-on-the-joe-rogan-experience-podcast-8cef24d7-6b13-417d-8efe-cc22c0aa3637 How do we use that as a source? Trackinfo (talk) 04:56, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We don't. A user-created petition is not in any way a suitable source for a contested claim on a WP:BLP. Kuru (talk) 05:04, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing

Dear Kuru,

Thank you very much for your remark. I understand your concern regarding a mirror citation from an article in wikipedia published in another language. Information/article from wikipedia published in English is defined by [[ ]]. Unfortunately, a link to unique, reliable article published in German is not recommended. In some cases, however, it is practically impossible to find such a unique (and exact) information in pages published in English. Such a difficult situation occured in two cases: (1) for individuals who passed away several years ago. Thus, the only available information is published in German, e.g. an article about prof. Werner Koster exists in German wikipedia, only. (2) for modest scientists who are still active in the field. Frequently, they do not reveal personal information and it is too early for obituary and/or rememberances. This is why it was considered that an independent information from German widikepia is the best solution.

I would be grateful if you could advice how to obey the general rules and allow a precise/direct citation of unique information available in German wikipedia. In the case of scientists, the number of availabe citations is limited (a scientific paper cannot be cited here).

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions

OmegaMS — Preceding unsigned comment added by OmegaMS (talkcontribs) 12:28, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sources in German are perfectly acceptable. Any source German or English must still meet our requirements for reliable sources, however. Using French and German mirrors of Wikipedia is never acceptable. Kuru (talk) 14:19, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About our recent attempt to update content for Policybazaar Wikipedia Page

Hi Kuru,

Thanks for your reply!

Actually, I’m a little confused with the disclosure of paid contributors. I do not really understand the procedure. So I was hoping if you could probably point in the right direction.

Earlier, the business model of Policybazaar.com was focused around providing comparison of insurance quotes and features. Therefore, the older logo was accompanied with a tag line emphasizing more on comparison of insurance products. However, in 2015, the company got licensed by IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) to conduct online transactions. So we had to make major change in our company’s logo. The new tagline in the logo focuses more on comparison of insurance quotes, direct buying access and the eventual savings associated. Our older page features the old logo and I was expecting if we could get that changed because few of our customers have already pointed this out.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Thank you, — Preceding unsigned comment added by VidushiDubey (talkcontribs) 16:55, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I left you a link on your talk page: WP:PAID. That page has the information you need, specifically in the "How to disclose" section. I would strongly suggest that you avoid editing the article directly and put suggestions, such as the one above, on the article's talk page. Kuru (talk) 17:34, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About 'Rishu' article

Hello! Well, I am the creator of 'Rishu' article. I created this article after collecting resources from various places and I am still pursuing my research on this article. I will, in a short period of time, definitely add more resourceful content to this article for making it more accessible to the readers. For making it more reliable, I added relevant references to the article, but I noticed that you deleted both of my references and you know that without any effective source, the article becomes more prone to be deleted by any other reviewer. So, I just want to know the reason of your deletion of my references and till then I am again introducing those references to my article. Rishu Shukla (talk) 16:49, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The reason was given clearly in the edit summary. You may not use mirrors of our content to source articles here. This is covered at WP:CIRCULAR. In this instance, both of the mirrors very clears identify their content as copied from here; please do not restore those references. Kuru (talk) 18:07, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WIkiwand

Dear Kuru, We have just modified an incorrect reference from German wikipedia (wikiwand) indicated in your notice; translation of the title into English is appended. Hope that corrected version fulfills official requirements. In the case of further details let me know how to put such an important information/reference in a perfect format. The article has arrived to quite an advanced level. References are extremely carefully selected. Time is still needed to find a few missing pieces of information. Thank you very much for carefull analysis of this article, I remain, Andrew3789 (talk) 18:15, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We cannot use Wikiwand or any other wikipedia as a reference. Please stop adding that link. Kuru (talk) 20:02, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

users Lidiia Kondratieva and Lyupant

Hi Kuru. I was hoping you might have some suggestions on what to do with Lidiia Kondratieva (talk · contribs) and Lyupant (talk · contribs)

You've encountered them a few times now [3] [4] [5]

As you've seen, they repeatedly use very poor sources in BLPs.

I'd be extremely surprised if this wasn't paid editing, given the choice of articles and type of editing.

Their interactions look more like meatpuppetry than sockpuppetry, given that they sometimes are both editing at the same time.

Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2018_January_14#sources demonstrates there's at least some recognition that the sources may be inappropriate from Lidiia Kondratieva.

My attempts to get some response from Lidiia Kondratieva have resulted in reverts of my comments. [6]. --Ronz (talk) 18:57, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's really odd. They're asking if the New York Times is a RS, but they're okay with "famousbirthdays" and all those other trash content aggregation sites? I think this is a situation where if your English isn't very strong and someone pushes you to source something, you're likely to just grab the first google hit that matches your source string. Be it a really obvious mirror or one of those "celebritynetworth" crap sites. If that's the case then I'm very concerned about some of the long coherent text additions to BLPs that are likely copyvios - they were tagged for that at least once before. Will dig through it in more detail tonight when I get a few free moments. Kuru (talk) 20:12, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The "really odd" continues. Looks to me like paid editing with pressure to do quick-and-dirty work. I don't think these editors should be working on BLPs at this point. While they are occassionally seeking help, I don't think either has the time to do what's required of BLP articles. Did you look into it any further? --Ronz (talk) 18:04, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping:Ronz Yes; all the red flags are there, but I can't find the smoking gun. I spent some time on odesk and others looking for matching wikipedia gigs, but didn't fins a correlation. Found several other articles to watchlist, but nothing on the expected keywords - like "Heyhoe cookprint" or whatever. Still watching, but it still feels like AGF territory. Kuru (talk) 02:56, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking. Any suggestions on how to kindly nudge them toward getting a mentor or working through some tutorials? --Ronz (talk) 03:21, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I'd let you know about some recent encounters I've had with both. Let me know if it is a bother to you, as I'm already looking for where to turn to next.

I'm still coming across Lyupant's edits in my searches for unreliable sources in BLPs. I've left a warning on Lyupant's talk page. This situation feels bit strange, still like paid editing, but there's no evidence. I'm not sure where to take it next.

Lidiia Kondratieva seems to be following in the path of the many editors that have tried to make Naveen Jain a battleground. If this isn't paid editing, I'd be extremely surprised, but there's no evidence beyond the behavior and choice of articles. I've made an attempt to work something out at User_talk:Lidiia_Kondratieva#Talk:Naveen_Jain, but it may already be past time to seek outside help. --Ronz (talk) 22:51, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look again. I think my radar dropped when they started adding biographies of dead people and historical figures.

COIN discussion started, initially only about Lidiia, Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Just_odd, though I'm seeing further promotional editing from Lyupant, who's continuing to find articles with past ODesk paid editing problems. --Ronz (talk) 17:04, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Key Performance Indicator

Hi Kuru,

Thanks for your advice. However, I am aware of everything you have said. The article has required a citation at that point for some time now and having written an e-book on the subject I felt the link would provide the right level of additional information. Please let me know how you think the reference should be included. CliveKeyte (talk) 16:39, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Clive Keyte[reply]

@CliveKeyte: Since you're familiar with the genre, supplying reliable published third-party sources would be best. The link to your self-published material does not suffice, and the pitch for your book and services there put the link in a gray area. If you feel the material cannot be sourced otherwise, then it may be best to remove it. Kuru (talk) 16:53, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would pay better attention to your sourcing. Most of the references are to very low quality self-published rags. I don't think starsunfolded, celebrityborn, or justbollywood are going to meet our rather strict requirements for biographies of living persons, especially if they're "kids." Promotion

Dear Kuru.

Please accept my apologies if the links I added seemed inappropriate. I added those links because I believe they add value to the page and, maybe, I had misread some of the guidelines as to the editing procedure.

Just for the sake of clarity for the future, as promotion is not allowed on Wikipedia can you please explain why on your Telemarketing page, citation 4 which clearly has a promotional purpose (linking to a private enterprise) was allowed? Am I missing something?

I would value your feedback on this.

Kind regards

Gbaggiani (talk) 10:57, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your additions were in no way a reliable source by our standards and you have a massive conflict of interest. Frankly, that was pretty blatant content marketing run and you were well aware of what you were doing. If you see other links you feel are inappropriate, feel free to remove them and/or replace them with actual reliable sources - since you're here to contribute to the encyclopedia and not just execute your marketing gig, right? Venkatagiri Raja High School Wiki Changes

@Kuru: @Editor 1: The information which I added in page Venkatagiri Raja High School ‎ is from the school library series Sowvenir written on Centernary Celebrations 1976-77 and this do not have any online references. I got this information from the one of the school alumni. Even though the school is of 175 years old but unfortunately it do not have much information online. This is the problem for many of the primary educational institutions in India and hence they pose a notability or a reliability problems while posting them into Wikipedia. I found few websites online where they talk little about the school. Hence I request you consider this issue and keep the content provided as genuine. If not please guide me how to proceed further in situations like this. This is a very old school hence it would be nice to keep the history of this school known to public. Shankar1242 (talk) 08:30, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Shankar1242: Cite every line you add to the material you acquired it from. Do not use Wikipedia mirrors as sources - "enacademic" and "gutenberg.us" are clearly identified as mirrors that copy their material from us and obviously cannot be used as a source. Avoid nonsense commentary like "people used to call the school with love". It may be best to propose additions on the article's talk page before making any other changes to the articles. Kuru (talk) 11:05, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kuru: @Editor 1: I am not able to understand fully about the mirror issues. Kindly request you to make few changes to the article and load accordingly for the standards that will be acceptable. I know that you do not have sources for this article but go through the stuff and avoid any sentences that do not fit. I need your help to publish this article without causing any issues. It's a very old school and many notable persons were studied in this school.

I'm not sure how to explain it better than I did above and on your talk page. I see you've started a conversation on the article's talk page. I'll respond there. Kuru (talk) 13:43, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kuru: @Editor 1: I have added new content via Wiki Draft Talk. Removed the mirror issues and added new sources of reference. Please help to publish this as an article. I am not keen in pushing but I am trying to avoid my mistakes and post only the genuine content for this. And I do not have any personal interest on this. Kindly help me.

There's an existing draft at Draft:Venkatagiri Raja High School. Kuru (talk) 11:56, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This IP (143.254.201.232) is the same as 143.254.201.238, which you just blocked. Could you block this IP also? Thanks. 172.58.43.83 (talk) 21:37, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thanks. Kuru (talk) 21:42, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I suddenly being blocked?

I have been suddenly blocked from various site locations and no reasons given. I don't understand. I'm not a hacker nor person with ill intent. All of it mysteriously done on same date with apparently, many many users under my IP address. My firm belief is this has been done as a result of interaction with the website known as Literotica. I did not knowingly engage in any disputes or arguments, but merely pointed out some questionable behavior as have many others.

I'm unfamiliar with internet speak or whatever it is you call it and this computer has also been plagued with many viruses as a result of contact with that website known as Literotica.com. Anything that can be done to assist me would be greatly appreciated.

I stumbled upon this part of Wikipedia by chance as I was looking up info about my area. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
