Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota (born October 30, 1993) is an American Football quarterback for the Oregon Ducks football team. He was a highly recruited prospect out of high school.[1] He was named starting quarterback for the Ducks for the 2012 season over highly touted sophomore Bryan Bennett.[2]
Early life
Mariota was born in Honolulu to Toa Mariota and Alana Deppe-Mariota. He has one younger brother, Matthew Mariota, who also plays quarterback for Saint Louis. Out of high school he was considered one of the best Hawaii prospect since Timmy Chang.[3] Besides the Ducks, he had offers from the Hawaii Warriors, Memphis Tigers, Utah Utes, Oregon State Beavers, Washington Huskies, Arizona Wildcats, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans, and the Stanford Cardinal.[4]
High school
He was rated the No. 6 recruiting prospect in the state of Hawaii and No. 12 overall quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com. As a senior, he threw for 2,597 yards on 165 of 255 passing (64.7%), including 32 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He guided the Crusaders to an 11-1 record and a state title. He also rushed the ball 60 times for 455 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 7 touchdowns.[5]

College career
2011 Season
As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Mariota did not see any action. He most spend his time on the scout team. But in case of a emergency, Mariota did dress for every game in case of injury to Darron Thomas or Bryan Bennett.
2012 Season
Entering the offseason, Oregon was hit with many starters leaving for the 2012 NFL Draft, notably running back LaMichael James and quarterback Darron Thomas. After a good spring game and fall practices, he was named starting quarterback in their opener against Arkansas State.[6]
Game 1: Arkansas St.
In his first game starting, he made some headlines as he went for 18-22 with 200 yards and 3 touchdown passes. He also added 4 carries for 24 yards. He was pulled out of the game with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter with Oregon leading 50-3.[7] With this win the Ducks start off the season (1-0) and look to win the Pac-12 after heavy favorite, USC Trojans. After this performance he was mentioned as possible dark-horse Heisman Trophy finalist. He was also named player of the game against the Red Wolves. After his excellent performance in this game he helped Oregon rise in the AP Top 25.[8]
Game 2: Fresno St.
Mariota looked to continue his success from the previous week against ASU. Fresno State were heavy underdogs, but the Ducks were faced with the challenge of an offense similar to their own. Mariota went for 19-27 with 166 yards and 1 touchdown. He also carried the ball 14 times for 67 yards. His great performance helped state his Heisman case and lead to an Oregon win, as the final score was 42-25.[9] With this win the Ducks are now (2-0). He hopes he can carry this momentum into his next game, vs. Tennessee Tech.[10] Also, even though he had a great game, he didn't help Oregon rise in the Top 25 polls.[11]
Game 3: Tennessee Tech
Going into this game, Oregon were heavy favorites. They were heavy favorites due to Tennessee Tech being a FCS school. But Mariota looked to keep up with Heisman talk. Him and the ducks were looking for a easy win.[12] But heading into this games the Ducks where hit with the injury bug.[13] [14]
