The eighth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on March 26, 2011 with the episodes "A Friendly Game" and "Oral Report" and will consist of 26 episodes, bringing the number of episodes up to 178.
Some time during this season, about 15 episodes so far, SpongeBob SquarePants will overtake Rugrats as the longest running Nicktoon (in terms of number of episodes in which Rugrats had 172 episodes and SpongeBob currently has 167 so far). SpongeBob SquarePants was put on hiatus due to an interferences of schedule-stealing new shows.
