Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota (born October 30, 1993) is an American Football quarterback for the Oregon Ducks football team.[1] He was a highly recruited prospect out of high school.[2] He was named starting quarterback for the Ducks for the 2012 season over highly touted sophomore Bryan Bennett.[3]

Early life

Mariota was born in Honolulu to Toa Mariota and Alana Deppe-Mariota. He has one younger brother, Matthew Mariota, who also plays quarterback for Saint Louis. Out of high school he was considered one of the best Hawaiian prospects since Timmy Chang.[4] Besides the Ducks, he had offers from the Hawaii Warriors, Memphis Tigers, Utah Utes, Oregon State Beavers, Washington Huskies, Arizona Wildcats, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans, and the Stanford Cardinal.[5]

High school

He was rated the No. 6 recruiting prospect in the state of Hawaii and No. 12 overall quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com. As a senior, he threw for 2,597 yards on 165 of 255 passing (64.7%), including 32 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He guided the Crusaders to an 11-1 record and a state title. He also rushed the ball 60 times for 455 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 7 touchdowns.[6]

College career

2011 Season

As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Mariota did not see any action. He most spend his time on the scout team. But Mariota did dress for every game in case of injury to Darron Thomas or Bryan Bennett.

2012 Season

Entering the offseason, Oregon was hit with many starters leaving for the 2012 NFL Draft, notably running back LaMichael James and quarterback Darron Thomas. After a good spring game and fall practices, he was named starting quarterback in their opener against Arkansas State.[7]

Game 1: Arkansas St. Red Wolves

In his first game starting, he made some headlines as he went for 18-22 with 200 yards and 3 touchdown passes. He also added 4 carries for 24 yards. He was pulled out of the game with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter with Oregon leading 50-3.[8] With this win the Ducks start off the season (1-0) and look to win the Pac-12 after heavy favorite, USC Trojans. After this performance he was mentioned as possible dark-horse Heisman Trophy finalist. He was also named player of the game against the Red Wolves. After his excellent performance in this game he helped Oregon rise in the AP Top 25.[9]

Game 2: Fresno St. Bulldogs

Mariota looked to continue his success from the previous week against ASU. Fresno State were heavy underdogs, but the Ducks were faced with the challenge of an offense similar to their own. Mariota went for 19-27 with 166 yards and 1 touchdown. He also carried the ball 14 times for 67 yards. His great performance helped state his Heisman case and lead to an Oregon win, as the final score was 42-25.[10] With this win the Ducks are now (2-0). He hopes he can carry this momentum into his next game, vs. Tennessee Tech.[11] Also, even though he had a great game, he didn't help Oregon rise in the Top 25 polls.[12]

Game 3: Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles

Going into this game, Oregon were heavy favorites. This was due to Tennessee Tech being an FCS school. Mariota and the ducks were looking for an easy win.[13] But heading into this games the Ducks were hit with the injury bug.[14] [15] The Ducks looked to start the season (3-0).[16] Mariota had an excellent game.[17] Mariota was 21-28 for 308 yards. He also threw 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also rushed the ball 4 times for 17 yards. With this performance he lead the ducks to a 63-14 win over the Golden Eagles.[18] The Ducks are now (3-0). He also helped his Heisman case. Mariota hopes to keep this momentum next week when they play the #22 Arizona Wildcats.[19]

Game 4: Arizona Wildcats

Going into this game many experts predicted a high scoring game due to both teams running a Spread Offense. [20] Mariota looks to have great game due to it being the conference opener for both teams.[21] Mariota will also try to help his road to win the Heisman Trophy.[22] Mariota wants to build on his momentum from the Tennessee Tech game. Mariota had one hell of a game. He went 20-35 and 260 yards and 2 TDs. On the ground he carried the ball 5 times for 17 yards.[23] With this performance it lead to a blowout of Arizona as they won, 49-0.[24] Also in the AP Polls Oregon rose to #3 after LSU was struggling with Auburn.[25] Mariota also helped gain Heisman voters.[26]

Game 5: Washington State Cougars

Oregon and Mariota looked for another win.[27] They were heavy favorites coming into this game.[28] Mariota looked to continue his Road to the Heisman.[29] While Oregon is coming off a win, Wazzu is coming in after a loss.[30] Mariota looked to carve up a bad Wazzu defense.[31] Mariota had an ok game.[32] He went for 21-32 169 yards and 1 TD, but he threw 2 interceptions.[33] He also carried the ball 9 times for 56 yards and 1 TD.[34] While Oregon blew out the Cougars, they stayed #2 in the AP Polls.[35] [36] [37] After this game, Mariota and the Ducks will prepare for Keith Price and the Washington Huskies.[38] Since Mariota threw 2 int's, he lost some Heisman voters.[39]

Game 6: Washington Huskies

Mariota had a beast of a game.[40] He was 15-24 198 yards and 4 TD's.[41] He also carried the ball 7 times for 40 yards.[42] Mariota also kept Oregon in the race for a National Championship.[43] Mariota and the Ducks also improved to (6-0).[44] He also made statement for the Heisman.[45] Also, Mariota and the Ducks are now bowl eligible.[46] [47]

Game 7: Arizona State Sun Devils

Mariota was only 9-12 passing for 46 yards and 1 touchdown.[48] [49] [50] But he showcased his impressive running ability with 135 yards on 10 carries, including an 86-yard long run that resulted in a touchdown.[51] He also had one touchdown receiving, as he caught an improvised pass from Bryan Bennett on what looked liked a broken play from Arizona Sate's 2-yard line.[52] Mariota's efforts helped Oregon amass a staggering 43 points in under 20 minutes of play.[53] [54] [55] Maiota also help try state a case for the #2 spot in the BCS Rankings.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
