This is a great historical fiction novel. It is about Cecile who lives in Quebec with her father. She witnesses a slave being beaten and with the little money that she has, she buys him and gives him freedom. Lesharo, the Pawnee slave, feels obligated to stay and serve her.
When Cecile accompanies her father working for a fur trading company, Lesharo goes to protect Cecile. Cecile goes to live in a fort in Detroit and her life becomes filled with hate, lies, and romance with her friend and protector Lesharo and Edmond St.Germain, a lieutenant in the army.
