Villain Overview

Who gives a f-ck about movies?!
~ Wayne's most famous quote, moments before killing Jason Carvey.
Now, it wasn't until I saw that photograph of what you actually done to him, that I knew! That I knew you had f-cking die, you had to be punished! Along with anyone else who stands in our way!
~ Wayne's villain breakdown.

Detective Wayne Kirsch, better known by his alias Wayne Bailey, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Billy Loomis) of the 2022 slasher film Scream and the main antagonist of its 2023 sequel Scream VI.

He is the father of deranged serial killer Richie Kirsch, who seeks revenge against Samantha Carpenter for killing his beloved son. To do so, he teams up with his two remaining children, Quinn Bailey and Ethan Landry, and the trio form a plan to kill Sam and her half-sister Tara.

He was portrayed by Dermot Mulroney, who also played Dr. David Henry in The Memory Keeper's Daughter, President Ritson in Secret Invasion and voiced Jessie in American Dad!. While in-disguise, he was voiced by Roger L. Jackson. In-costume scenes as Ghostface were portrayed by Max Laferriere.

Biography[]

Wayne is a high-ranking officer and detective who married an unnamed woman before having three kids: Richie Kirsch, Quinn Bailey, and Ethan Kirsch. While admitting he wasn't perfect, Wayne was still a loving father who he tried to connect with Richie via supporting his love of the Stab franchise, to the point of stealing evidence for the Ghostface attacks from the police so they could build a shrine in an old, abandoned New York City theatre.

Eventually, Richie would team up with Amber Freeman to cause a new killing spree for a new Stab film, using Billy Loomis' biological daughter Samantha. However, both Richie and Amber were killed by Sam and her half-sister Tara with the help of Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers when Amber murdered the latter's ex-husband Dewey Riley. After Gale published a book detailing the events, Wayne was mad and sought revenge against the Carpenter sisters.

Wayne formed a plan to go to New York where Sam and Tara now lived. Wayne took a position as an NYPD Detective with him and Quinn remaining father and daughter under their new identities, whilst Ethan formed a new identity completely unrelated to them.

Scream VI[]

Wayne stalked Blackmore University student Jason Carvey and watched as he murdered his film professor Laura Crane and then followed him back to his dorm room where he had already murdered Jason's roommate and accomplice Greg Bruckner. Wayne then killed Jason and left Sam's ID at the scene in order to call her down to the police station for questioning.

While on the way, Wayne called Sam using Richie's old phone and threatened her. Shortly after the call, Wayne emerged from an alley and attacked Sam and Tara, but they evaded him and ran into a Bodega which he followed them into. He killed multiple customers and the Bodega owner and took the owner's shotgun, which he used to stalk Sam and Tara. When Sam and Tara escaped just as the police arrived, Wayne escapes through the backdoor and leaves behind Jill Roberts and Charlie Walker's old masks.

Wayne then asked Sam and Tara to meet him at the police station, as he pretends to be an innocent investigator who wants to solve the Ghostface mysteries once and for all and aid Sam and Tara in their goals. He is also introduced during their conversation to Kirby Reed, who now works at the FBI and offers him assistance in solving the Ghostface conspiracy. Wayne was threatened by her arrival but kept up appearances by teaming up with her.

That night, Wayne sends Ethan to "kill" Quinn, and swapped her body in front of the police with another, similar-looking body. Ethan also managed to kill Quinn's lover Paul and brutally murder Anika. The next day, Wayne pretended to mourn his daughter's "death". Wayne was later informed by Kirby about a shrine which she found, and he pretended that he didn't know anything about this, seemingly investigating the place and the activity inside it. It was also shown that Jason sprayed his name and some Ghostface graffiti inside the shrine.

Later that day, Wayne devises a plan to track down Ghostface, unbeknownst to the group that this was a setup between him, Quinn and Ethan. Wayne stood guard in a park whilst Sam and Tara walked around and waited for a phone call from Ghostface. When the call came through, Kirby tracked it to Gale's penthouse where Quinn was waiting to attack her. Sam and Tara stole Wayne's police car to go after her.

When Gale is wounded, Tara comes up with a plan to capture Ghostface and shares this with Wayne, who says they should use the warehouse and travel in public, allowing Quinn to attack Mindy Meeks-Martin on the subway. When Chad, Tara, Sam, and Kirby arrive at the shrine, Wayne calls Sam and tells her that Kirby was discharged from the FBI for mental health reasons in order to frame her as the killer.

While Sam and Tara try run out of the place, they are cornered by Quinn and Ethan as Ghostfaces, as Kirby and Wayne point guns at each other. Kirby remarks that Bailey is the mastermind. Wayne then shoots her and seemingly manages to kill her, revealing himself as Ghostface and that he, Quinn, and Ethan are Richie's family. Sam doesn't care as she then insults them how much of a wimp Richie was, making them enraged but distracted enough for Tara to throw a brick at Quinn and Kirby to shoot Wayne. During the fight, Sam and Tara managed to kill Quinn and almost Ethan, much to Wayne's horror of seeing now both of his kids killed.

Wayne later got knocked out after smashing into a glass display case, after he and Sam both ragefully threw each other off the rooftop. When Wayne wakes up, he gets a phone call from Sam, playing the Ghostface trick back on him with the voice, as he tries to make fun of Sam as he sees that she took her dad's old costume frame the original killing spree, still comparing her to her birthright. But Sam twists his words, taunting him that this is what he wanted but he didn't like this, as well as taunting him to how he's going to die, as enraged, desperate, and anxious Wayne demands her to show herself. Sam then emerges behind him in Billy's old mask and costume. Sam stabs Wayne over thirty times as he screams in pain. She pretends to spare him, telling him she's nothing like her dad since he's a cold-blooded murder like Wayne and he thanks her out of self-awareness. But for Wayne, knowing he's too dangerous to keep alive and for killing innocents and for trying to kill her, her sister, and their friends, Sam brutally stabs Wayne in the eye with the knife, as he falls to his death, finally putting end to Richie's entire family killing spree.

Quotes[]

Do you feel like an animal, Jason? Like... meat?
~ Wayne while stabbing Jason to death.
Wayne/Ghostface: Hello, Samantha. Did you miss me?
Sam: I want you to think long and hard about whether you really want to do this, because the last two people that f-cked with us, ended up dead.
Ghostface: You should be thanking me, Sam. Jason and Greg were gonna kill you and your sister. I gutted them before they had the chance.
Sam: So, what? You're protecting us now?
Ghostface: Not quite. I’m going to show the world who you really are, a liar and a killer. I’m going to punish you, Sam!
Sam: You shouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet, asshole.
Ghostface: Don’t be cute, you’re gonna pay for what you did! And I’m not gonna stop until I butcher you... you and anyone who gets between us! You and Tara better watch your backs.
~ Wayne's phone call with Samantha.
Do either of you have anyone that might wanna target you?
~ Wayne to Sam and Tara at the police station.
Remember Samantha Carpenter's alibi, the therapist? He was stabbed to death, through the nose. Through the nose, how messed up is that? He turned her in for making threatening remarks, ended up dead. And guess which patient's notes were stolen?
~ Wayne tells Kirby about Dr. Stone's death.
[crying] Both my kids are gone... My whole family... is gone. They took me of the case. But I'm not gonna stop until I find him. You f-ck with my family... you die!
~ Wayne "mourns" Quinn's "death".
Do you have a license? What are you doing? It's a cop car! You can't steal a cop car!
~ Wayne after Sam and Tara drove off in his car to Gale's apartment.
Wayne: I'm getting my ass chewed out for not dropping the case, and now you want me to do what?
Tara: We want to lure him to a secure location and trap him inside.
Wayne: And then what?
Tara: We execute him. Are you gonna help us?
Wayne: Let's kill the son of a bitch. Now, I'm stuck here, but Gale gave us the keycards to the theather. It's got heavy surveillance and security cameras, but we can use that against him. I'll tell Kirby to meet you there, I'll join you as soon as I can. And remember, travel in public, the more people around you, the less chance he has to take a shot at you before you get there.
~ Wayne's phone call with Tara.
Wayne: Hey, stop! Stay away from the girls!
Kirby: What are you doing?
Wayne: Did you kill Quinn? Did you kill my daughter?!
~ Wayne accuses Kirby of Quinn's "death".
Kirby: Jesus Christ! Whatever he's been saying, don't listen to him! He is probably the killer! [Quinn as Ghostface appears behind Wayne] Behind you! [Wayne stops pretending and shoots Kirby, revealing himself as Ghostface]
Wayne: [to Quinn] Great job. [Ethan as Ghostface appears next to Wayne] Both of you.
Tara: You?
Wayne: Yeah, of course me. Frankly, I expected more from the two of you, after what you did to us.
Tara: What do you mean, "us"?
~ Wayne is revealed as one of the killers.
I just made sure I was first on the scene so I could switch her body out with a fresh one. Little fake blood, a prosthetic. You'd be amazed at what a grieving father can get away with.
~ Wayne tells Sam and Tara how he faked Quinn's death.
Wayne: You're a killer, just like your father.
Sam: NO, I'M NOT!
Quinn: YES, YOU ARE, YOU MOTHERF-CKER, YOU KILLED OUR BROTHER!
Sam: What are you talking about?
Tara: You said your brother died in a car accident.
Ethan: No, no, no, no, you sweet dumb thing… He died in Woodsboro… at the hands of your bitch sister.
Sam: [Sam looks at all the Kirsch family members and becomes stunned, realizing who they're talking about] You're Richie's family.
~ Wayne, Quinn and Ethan are revealed to be Richie's family.
Now! It wasn’t until I saw that photograph of what you’ve done to him, that I knew! That I knew you had f-cking die, you had to be punished! Along with anyone else who stands in our way!
~ Wayne threatening Sam.
Have I been a perfect dad? No. I maybe overindulged Richie's love that these little movies had, maybe. For me, they're just a little dark, but… Richie really loved them… He made a few of his own. Did you know?
~ Wayne discusses Richie's love for the Stab movies.
Wayne: There is a very special bond between a father and his first son. [Ethan is upset and saddened by Wayne's words]
Which is why I helped him build this collection.
Sam: This was, all his?
Wayne: Yes, he was a very passioned collector and he inspired others. Ah, we had to kill those two wannabe film students because, well, we had to kill you first, Sam. I put the theater in their name, and good-old Detective Bailey would've just stumbled on it, but I didn’t have too because by golly, that Gale Weathers is one hell of a journalist. I built a tribute to my son, which is why this is where you have to die, Sam. Surrounded by all the things he loved the most.
~ Wayne explains the creation of the shrine.
Sam: What happens next? What, after you're done with us, what, you just disappear?
Wayne: No, we gotta hurry over to the hospital and make sure Mindy and Gale don't pull through, because EVERYBODY DIES, SAM! Everyone who had anything to do with the death of my son! SUFFERS AND DIES! Now, put on the mask.
Sam: [about Richie] He was… he was so pathetic.
Wayne: [gets offended] That's not true!
Sam: Yeah, your son. He was a man-baby who made his girlfriend do all the killing.
Wayne: He was a strong, virile young man!
Sam: He was a limp dick little f-ck who cried before I slit his throat.
Quinn: SHUT THE F-CK UP!!!!!
~ Sam insults Richie in front of Wayne and his kids, showing that she doesn't care about their loss for Richie since he and his family are cold blooded monsters who killed innocence, which distracted them enough to fight back.
Sam/Ghostface: Hello, Detective Bailey. I have got one question for you.
Wayne: Oh yeah? What's that?
Sam: What's your favorite scary movie?
Wayne: [chuckles] "Favorite scary movie..."
Sam: I'm asking, because you are in one now. You're in my movie.
~ Sam, as Ghostface, calls Wayne, using the Ghostface trick back on him.
Wayne: [notices Billy's Ghostface costume is missing, which leads him to believe that Sam put it on] I see you've put on your true face, huh? Your birthright. Poetic that you're gonna die in it.
Ghostface: This is what you wanted, isn’t it?
Wayne: Now you know the truth, huh? Murder's in your blood! Stop f-cking around! Show yourself!
Ghostface: Be careful what you wish for.
Wayne: Alright, I'm a f-cking police officer! How do you think this is going to go, Sam? Who do you think they're gonna believe, huh?!
Ghostface: Probably the one who's still alive.
~ Wayne's breakdown as he starts to feel annoyed and anxious by the phone conversation with Sam, threatening him and taunting him back as she implied that Kirby is the cop that's still alive.
Sam: [after stabbing Wayne numerous times] My father was a murderer. No matter what you think, I'm better than that.
Wayne: Thank you... [coughs] thank you...
Sam: But you did f-ck with our family, so... [Sam brutally stabs Wayne in the eye and kills him]
~ Wayne's last moments after being stabbed multiple times by Sam, foolishly believing she will spare him after what he did to her and her friends.

Trivia[]

  • In an interview, actor Dermot Mulrooney admitted that playing the new cop in the franchise he was inspired by Dewey Riley played by David Arquette.
  • Assuming that Wayne shares the same age as his actor, he is currently the oldest Ghostface in the franchise, at around 60 years old.
  • Bailey shares many similarities with Nancy Loomis, the main killer from Scream 2. As Scream VI can be seen as the first sequel to the "requel" Scream movies, Wayne fills the same purpose of Nancy from a narrative perspective as well.
    • They are both vengeful parents who seek revenge for the death of their children, who held the mantle of Ghostface in the previous entry (Billy Loomis and Richie Kirsch, respectively).
    • They go about this by donning the Ghostface mask themselves and going on their own killing spree outside of Woodsboro.
    • They also adopt fake names to conceal their identity as the biological parents of the previous Ghostface (Debbie Salt and Wayne Bailey).
    • Both take up accomplices in their killing sprees, although Wayne enlists his own children to help him while Nancy hired Mickey Altieri on the Internet.
    • Both are partially responsible for their children becoming serial killers. However, the main difference between Wayne and Nancy in this is that Nancy abandoned her son when he was young, and being an absentee mother encouraged her son to become a killer. Meanwhile, Wayne was an overindulging father towards Richie who actually encouraged his obsession with the Stab movies (even if he was unaware it would turn him into a serial killer).
  • Wayne is the only main antagonist in the films who has never interacted with Sidney Prescott. While he isn't the first whose motives aren't tied to Sidney in any way, he is the first not to get her involved.
  • Wayne is the fifth killer in the franchise who successfully killed another killer (preceded by Jill Roberts, the Third Killer, Jamal Elliot, and Beth).
  • By recruiting his own children to his cause, Wayne was the first Ghostface who's confirmed to purposely corrupt his own family members.
    • Additionally, deleted dialogue from Scream VI reveals that Wayne and Ethan murdered Mrs. Kirsch together after she refused to help them in their killing spree. However, as this was a deleted line, it's unknown if this is still canon.
