Red's Grandmother is the main antagonist of the indie horror game Little Red Lie. Essentially the grandmother of the Red Riding Hood who was seemingly killed by the Big Bad Wolf 10 years ago, she was then revealed to be something worse. It was then revealed that Red's Grandmother is an evil witch who had a twisted appetite towards little children as she decided to kidnap them and bake them in her own oven. Due to this sickening and twisted atrocity, a cat-like creature named Ascat decided to punish her by collaborating with the Big Bad Wolf in order to kill her for good.
However, when murdering Red's grandmother, not only the Big Bad Wolf was killed by the Hunter after devouring the grandmother 10 years ago, but her spirit also managed to curse the land. This resulted in Red's grandmother turning into a monstrous wolf-like creature that devours anything in her path to satiate her appetite.
Appearance[]
As a human, Red's grandmother has the appearance of an ordinary old woman, with wrinkled skin and her hair tied back in a single bun. For clothing, she wears a red shawl over a white dress that almost looks like a yukata and brown shoes. While her appearance in this form is ordinary, her wolf form is anything but. Taking the shape of a large gray wolf, the grandmother's head is but a featureless growth containing just her ears and nose. In the place of her canid eyes and mouth, a set of four, humanoid eyes appear on her body (one just below the head, two on her back, and one on her right foreleg), with a large, gaping maw appearing on her chest. In this form, she also possesses a long, red tongue, while all four of her feet only have a single claw.
Personality[]
Most of the time, Red's grandmother is shown to be an affable person. This is due to the fact that both of them had formed a bond together to the point that Red ended up coming back to the forest 10 years later in order to pay respects towards her death after being murdered by the Big Bad Wolf, showing that deep down inside, Red truly misses her. However, beneath the surface of her affable personality, therein lies a horrific truth that Red doesn't know until Ascat reminded her about her grandmother's true, rotten nature. It was then revealed that Red's grandmother was a predator of small children akin to the witch from Hansel and Gretel. She has no hesitation to kidnap them or at the very least, lure them into the house so that she could devour them as she pleases. Her predatory nature is also shown during the Bad Ending where it is heavily implied that she will try to eat Red after she manages to release her from her confinement. Her atrocities were so revolting that Ascat collaborated with the Big Bad Wolf to kill the grandmother for good.
However, their plans ended up being futile after seeing the fact that Red's grandmother is cursed with her spirit unable to live on, turning her into her own killer. After turning into the Big Bad Wolf, she then embraces herself as a true predator willingly to devour anything in its path. Despite her negative traits, the grandmother is also shown to be a cunning manipulator, willing to feign affability in order to get what she wants. This can be shown where she attempts to manipulate Red to release her after being confined in her cave while twisting Ascat's side of the story in order to gain Red's trust. After being released in the bad ending, it is also shown that she is capable of restraining her urges to eat somebody including her own granddaughter so that she could save the dessert for later as a part of faking her affability towards her own granddaughter once the latter becomes suspicious towards her.
In the good ending, when Red decided to leave her grandmother stranded in the forest alone, she then shows her true, pathetic nature, begging Red to release her several times to no avail while throwing a bit of tantrums at the same time, angry that she will never get released to terrorizes the forest at the end of the day.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Red's grandmother. However, from how the story presented, it is a known fact that she is Red's grandmother as Red also forms a decent bond towards her to the point Red came to the forest all by herself in order to honor her memory after being murdered by the Big Bad Wolf 10 years ago. However, she hides a dark secret from Red to the point she didn't know about it. It was revealed that Red's grandmother is a wicked witch who has a twisted appetite as she targeted children as her main course. After kidnapping innocent children to her house which is also called "Maison de Pain D'epiece", she then murders them and bakes them in the oven. When a cat-like creature named Ascat sees the horror that Red's grandmother had committed, he then collaborates with the Big Bad Wolf in order to stop Red's grandmother once and for all.
However, as the wolf attempts to stop Red's grandmother, it is revealed that he murdered her when her granddaughter was coming to visit. When devouring the grandmother, a hunter manages to step in and murdered the Big Bad Wolf as Red sees it through her eyes. Although both the Big Bad Wolf and Red's Grandmother were murdered, the latter's spirit began to live on and was reborn as her killer, albeit a bit more monstrous. This is due to the fact that her spirit is cursed for all the things that she had done. This resulted in Red's grandmother deciding to devour everything in its path to satiate her appetite. As Ascat attempts to seal her in her house, it is then revealed that his efforts were futile as she manages to break free from the house.
Fast forward to the present day 10 years later, the Red Riding Hood decided to pay the respects towards her grandmother by revisiting the forest again. Meeting with Ascat, she then decided to feed him with the corpse of a dead bird. This resulted in a portal to enter some parts of the forest being opened as Red attempts to enter it. When Red attempts to enter the portal, Ascat then decides to warn her about the Big Bad Wolf that was roaming in the forest much to her surprise due to the fact that she saw a cat talking for the first time. Hearing about Ascat's warning, Red then tells her side of the story about why she went to the forest in the first place. Hearing Red's backstory and reasoning, Ascat then tells Red that her grandmother is pretty much alive and was last seen in the swamp much to her surprise. This resulted in Red suspecting that Ascat is a liar However, Ascat simply debunks the notion that he would lie towards her because cats are a type of creature that couldn't lie. Despite her initial suspicions, Red has no choice but to go to rescue her grandmother and defeat the Big Bad Wolf anyways. Seeing Red's determination to visit her grandmother and defeat the Big Bad Wolf, Ascat then warns Red that her grandmother might be the last thing that Red will see.
As Red manages to enter the portal in the forest, Ascat also enters the portal too while giving her valuable information on how to evade against the Big Bad Wolf. Said information is about hiding from the wolf using an object with a shadow as the wolf is unable to see her prey's presence despite having so many eyes in her body. Heeding Ascat's advice, Red then uses this to her advantage in order to evade the wolf's capture. Managing to avoid the wolf, she then enters the house of her grandmother that has been ransacked. Seeing a huge cauldron in front of her, Red then decided to make a recipe to make a potion of confinement in order to defeat the Big Bad Wolf once and for all. To that end, she needs to gather several ingredients such as saffron, wine and minced meat. Avoiding several monsters roaming the forests, she then gathers several ingredients such as the wine from the well near her grandmother's house and the saffron. In addition, as Red decided to go to the wolf's cave, she then took a pig head that can be used for minced meat, only for her to see a huge pile of bones in the cave.
After gathering several ingredients, Red then brews the potion to seal the Big Bad Wolf once and for all. In addition, she also decided to cut the hair of the Big Bad Wolf in a stealthy manner in order to make the potion work and seal the wolf for eternity. If the players didn't follow the recipe and brew the ingredients wrongly, Red then sees the potion ended up unintentionally boiling in the end much to her surprise. This resulted in her getting eaten by the wolf. However, if the players manage to follow the recipe right and brew the ingredients correctly, she manages to seal the Big Bad Wolf once and for all. Only for Red to hear her grandmother's voice begging her to get her out.
As Red attempts to destroy the confinement to free her grandmother, Ascat then intervenes and stops Red for doing so, telling her about her grandmother and the Big Bad Wolf being the same entity in one body and also the truth about her nature as a wicked witch that preys on children which cursed her as a restless spirit that roams in the forest who devour anything in its path. Red then becomes a bit confused once she also heard the grandmother's side of the story as she said that the wolf attacked her house and Ascat was saying nonsense. However, Ascat simply debunks her story by saying that the signs of damage are only from within her house. Hearing the two sides of the stories, the player was then offered a decision that will affect the ending of the game.
If the player decides to destroy the confinement seal, the grandmother then seemingly expresses her gratitude towards Red albeit seemingly restraining herself to reveal her other form as the Big Bad Wolf. Relieved that Red manages to reunite with her grandmother, the latter was also happy that she manage to get out, albeit that she ended up supporting an ominous feeling on her face due to the familiar smile that Red had saw as she noticed that her grandmother's smile is supported by a bright, large and gleaming white teeth. It is heavily implied that the grandmother seemingly expresses her intent to eat Red. However, she decided to restrain herself after Red became a bit suspicious towards her as she decided to tell her intent to eat Red at a later time, leading to the game's Bad Ending. However, if the players decided to heed Ascat's advice by leaving the forest before the portal closes as Red left her grandmother stranded alone sealed in the cave, the grandmother then begs for Red to release her several times.
Although seemingly regretting her decision, Ascat then tells Red to not listen to her grandmother's pleas as she tried to trick her. This resulted in the grandmother revealing her true form and nature, still keeping begging Red to release her to no avail. As Red manages to get out of the forest with Ascat, the two then introduce themselves with each other. Despite leaving the forest, Red feels an immense grief after leaving her grandmother stranded there in the forest for good. However, the sorrow of Red leaving her grandmother alone in the forest began to get lifted as she saw the sun rise over the horizon. Seeing the fact that the wolf is sealed forever, Red becomes happy that she now realizes that the world becomes a safer place, leading to the Good Ending of the game.

I asked the wolf to stop her, but her cursed spirit lives on. When I managed to lock her in the house, she managed to break free. |

Trivia[]
- The story itself is heavily inspired of several aesthetic of the Fairy Tales with Red Riding Hood as the main focus. However, there are several allusions that can be made through the story such as Ascat being an allusion to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. However, Red's grandmother's characteristic took an inspiration from Hansel & Gretel's witch due to their similarities of targeting and eating children.
