Villain Overview

That's the thing about friends, isn't it? The more you love 'em, the more it hurts when they go. Allow me to demonstrate.
~ King Andrias's most famous quote before dropping Sprig out of the castle window.
Now, look what you've made me do.
~ King Andrias' most infamous quote upon impaling Marcy Wu with his sword.
The Core/King Aldrich: You FOOL! You could've been immortal! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
King Andrias: Something I should've done a long time ago: standing up to YOU!
~ Andrias' most famous quote as he redeems himself by crushing the Core/his father in his crown.

King Andrias Leviathan is the main antagonist of the 2019 Disney Channel animated series Amphibia.

He is the former king of Amphibia who befriends Marcy Wu, one of the three girls teleported to his dimension, and seems to be helping her and her friends return to Earth. However, he was actually using her to regain the Calamity Box that was stolen away from him in order to help the Core, a hive mind of his ancestors that he works for, conquer the entire multiverse. Following his invasion of Earth where he learns his friends never betrayed him, Andrias gives up and redeems himself before being sentenced to help rebuild Amphibia, dedicated to restoring the flora and fauna as a simple farmer, which he happily accepts.

He is the son of the former King Aldrich, the former best friend of Leif and Barrel the Brave, the former superior of Lady Olivia and General Yunan, and the former second archenemy of Anne Boonchuy (following Sasha Waybright).

He was voiced by Keith David (who also played Chaos in Final Fantasy, Thailog in Gargoyles, Big Tim in Requiem for a Dream, Tublat in The Legend of Tarzan, Despero in Justice League, Atlas in Teen Titans, Thel 'Vadam in the Halo video game series, Julius Little and himself in the Saints Row video game series, Tombstone in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, Psycho Delic in the Megamind video games, Internet in Regular Show, President Andre Curtis in Rick and Morty, Lord Marmoo in Kulipari: An Army of Frogs, Malcolm Kane in Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters and Thrull in The Last Kids on Earth) his younger self in "The Core & The King" was voiced by Zeno Robinson (who also voiced The Golden Guard in The Owl House, Carter Brown in Craig of the Creek and Sentibubbler in Miraculous Ladybug) and Hayato Fujii in the Japanese dub.

Appearance[]

King Andrias is an anthropomorphic Chinese giant salamander with pale blue skin and a white underbelly; he is much taller than Anne, Marcy, Sasha and his royal guards in full armor were only knee-high. Andrias is stocky, muscular, and has white hair full of beards and crow's feet. He wears dark purple metal armor with an X-shaped battle mark on his left abdomen over a light shirt with cuffs similar to that of a Victorian nobleman. He wears a crown on his head (later revealed to have an inbuilt eye from the core to see things) and has shell-shaped shoulder pads; the right shoulder pad has a small X-shaped battle mark. He also wears a purple-gray belt with a golden snake-shaped belt buckle and a purple and gold tunic.

Personality[]

So what? I'm supposed to give up? Stop feeling things? Like you!? Honestly, I pity you! You shut yourself off from the rest of the world, didn't you!? 1,000 years of suffering, of burying your feelings, of hating yourself… that must have been hard.
~ Anne berates Andrias for the despicable and miserable being he has become by rejecting everything that matters to him.

At first, Andrias appeared to be a friendly ruler, oftentimes meaning his behavior had to be kept in check. However, this is merely a ploy to mask his true self; a manipulative, megalomaniacal and childish newt who believes that he alone should rule all worlds. He gave Marcy a proposition where she and her friends could have adventures indefinitely in the new world order that Andrias was promising.

Andrias also possesses a superficial charm and uses it to manipulate Anne into charging the gems on the Calamity Box whilst keeping it a secret that her powers would be removed. The most disturbing element of this is the fact that even when his true nature is revealed, Andrias continues to act in his cheerful, condescending demeanor. He also had no problem destroying a tower just to demonstrate his power without remorse, not even caring that there were people in it.

Although he shows himself to be quite a tactician as he makes it clear to the Cloak Bot to dispose of Anne and the Plantars discreetly on Earth to avoid attracting unwanted attention from the humans about his upcoming invasion, he is too impatient in terms of getting results, resulting him to "motivate" his Cloak Bot to kill Anne and the Plantar at any cost back on Earth by activating their self-destruct sequence. This eventually caused the Cloak Bot to recklessly attack Anne and Plantars wide open, which caused the US government to become aware of the existence of the Plantars and the Cloak Bot, destroying his original intention of a discreet assassination.

King Andrias has a bitter opinion on friendship, due in part to his two best friends leaving him, with the implication that they had stolen the Calamity Box from him (the speculative reason being that they realized how much of a psychotic tyrant he was). Unlike Captain Grime, who came to care for Sasha when she was first sent into Amphibia, Andrias values Marcy merely as a pawn in his plans and exploits her loneliness by making false promises.

When Marcy repents and tries to send Anne back home, he remorselessly stabs her and seemingly kills her with his sword, spitefully claiming that she made him do it. However, it's eventually revealed that he did truly like Marcy and care for her, begging The Core to use an alternative host instead of her and looking away in regret as Marcy was being possessed.

When the Calamity Box is removed from its stand by Polly, Andrias grabs Sprig and threatens to drop him out the window unless the box is returned to him. Even when Anne relents and does what he says, Andrias decides to drop Sprig anyway to teach the human girl a "lesson" about friendship.

Andrias is also shown to display hypocritical behavior. He claims his friends betrayed him, yet he does the exact same thing to those who served him. When he tasked Cloak Bot with destroying Anne and the Plantars, he told it to destroy them without being seen by other humans as he can't let Earth know about his invasion. However, when he took control of a Giant Robotic Santa using the drone, he attacks Anne, the Plantars and Anne's Parents in front of a large crowd of people at the parade. Before sending the drone, he claims it will make up for sending a robot even though he is sending another.

Despite all of Andrias' misdeeds, he does seem to have at least some genuine good inside of him, as he developed a fondness for Marcy beyond using her for his plans of conquering the multiverse. This is shown when he begs the Core not to use her as its host, and after he suggests that they use someone else as its host, he has a concerned look on his face and is reluctant when he agrees to use Marcy. It is also implied by his fondness for Marcy that he did care about his former friends after all, as he appeared to be genuinely hurt when they left and took the Calamity Box, giving some insight into why he told Anne that "the more you love [your friends], the more it hurts when they go".

"All In" further compounds on Andrias truly caring for Marcy when she first met him. While he doesn't admit it, the young teenager reminded him greatly of his former friends, and when the Core wanted to immediately kill her to acquire the stone's powers, Andrias instead recommends that he "befriends" her and then send her and her friends to the three temples to recharge the stones so that there would be no unnecessary bloodshed. Upon being defeated by Anne, the first thing that he does is beg Anne to save Marcy.

The penultimate episode also has the king at his most sympathetic point: after Sprig reads him the special letter that Leif had left him, Andrias breaks down when he realizes that she never forgot him like how he tried to do to her. However, he bemoans that he had crossed so many lines and that there was little chance for him to atone for his mistakes. However, the Core (and his father) try to push him to continue despite his will to fight being gone. Once Sasha freed him from the control of the Core, Andrias looks down at Leif's letter again and, remembering her words to never close anyone out, performs a redemptive act by allowing Anne to ram through him. He then begs Anne to go save Marcy, not minding about his own injuries.

In the final episode, when the moon came hurdling towards Amphibia, Andrias explained to everyone that it was the Core's final contingency plan to wipe out Amphibia by ramming the moon into it. As the Calamity Trio used their superpowers to stop the moon, the Core called out to Andrias via his crown once again, using Aldrich's voice, and begged him to save them under the promise that he would be able to join them and live forever. However, not wanting to put up with the Core's evil and abuse any longer, Andrias instead ordered his remaining robots to help the girls instead. When the Core expressed its fury and shock at this action, Andrias then angrily stated that he should have stood up to them a long time ago before crushing the crown in his palm, showing that he had cut ties with his evil father and rid himself of his influence once and for all. After the Core was destroyed for good, he then expressed relief that it was all over for his family's ambitious ways.

When everybody was saying their goodbyes as the girls were finally about to be sent home for good, Andrias solemnly stayed silent, believing that he did not deserve the luxury of a proper farewell. To his surprise, however, Marcy states an awkward, but genuine goodbye to the fallen king, showing that she shows no hatred towards him despite all the atrocities he committed against her and everyone else. This makes Andrias feel even more remorseful for betraying the first friend he made in over a millennium, but he is too guilt-ridden to look at her as he felt he does not have the right, so all he can bring himself to say to her is to take care of herself. He is also happily accepting of his punishment as a way to atone for his crimes.

In short, Andrias was once a good-natured newt who was forced into a life of multiversal conquest by his father and spent thousands of years trying to make him and his forefathers proud while the Core would deliberately gaslight and coerce him into becoming as vile and ruthless as he was. However, in his brief moments of clarity, he realized that he devoted himself to the wrong cause, but felt he was beyond redemption.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Andrias a very skilled player of Flipwart, a game that requires a high level of strategy and cunning to play, and was only beaten by Marcy, who has a genius-level intellect herself.
    • Master Manipulation: Owing to his intellect, Andrias is also very skilled at manipulating those around him for his goals. He gains Marcy's trust by appealing to her love of games and adventure, enough that she confides in him her guilt over tricking Anne and Sasha into getting stuck in Amphibia on purpose out of desperation to avoid being separated from them. His casual and outgoing demeanor also allows him to gain Anne and the Plantars trust after their first meeting with him. He enables Marcy to find the hidden knowledge on the Music Box while also downplaying his own understanding of it to avoid raising suspicion as well as keeping them from learning about the powers the trio gained from the box, allowing him to set the girls up on their quest to the 3 temples to recharge the stones and unknowingly draining their powers and subverting the Prophecy that threatens the Core's goals. For his finishing touch, he convinces Marcy to bring the Box back to Newtopia following their quests completion by promising to use it to take the girls on adventures throughout the Multiverse so that they can never be separated from each other, a promise he had no intention of keeping. The only reason his plan didn't work out like he'd hoped were due to Anne retaining a piece of the blue gems power, which happened due to circumstances that Andrias was unaware of and couldn't have predicted.
    • Mystical and Technological Knowledge: Having studied the ancient books about the Music Box, Andrias is very knowledgeable of the Music Box's power and the prophecy of the Olm's, even knowing of the ritual involving the 3 temples that would drain Anne, Marcy, and Sasha's powers back into the gems to recharge the box, which he incorporates into his plan to reclaim the box. Once he reclaims the recharge box and reactivates his ancestor's dormant Frobot army and war machines, he uses its power to terrifying effect, destroying Toad Tower and many other prominent locations with his castles box powered laser canon with relative ease and opening small portals to Earth to send the Cloak-bot and Drone Soldier through. He also seems to be very skilled at robotic engineering, building new and more unique Frobots for very specific purposes, such as the Cloak-bot (which he sends to Earth to kill Anne) and the Judge Frobot (which holds trials for enemies to the kingdom). He also found a way to create mind-control collars from the Mushroom Enzyme of Apothecary Gary's species to subjugate the wildlife of Amphibia (as well as Olivia and Yunaan) to bolster the ranks of his army.
  • Superhuman Strength: On account of his immense size and build, Andrias is also one of the strongest beings in Amphibia. He's shown to be strong enough to crush Frobo with a single punch, leave a massive hole in the floor of his throne room when he tries to crush Polly, as well as hold back an enhanced punch from a superpowered Anne for well over a few seconds. Even in his crippled state in the finale, he has enough strength to crush his crown/Core communicator into small shards with one hand.
    • Superhuman Durability: In addition to his immense strength, Andrias is shown to be very durable and able to take large amounts of punishment. He takes Anne's superpowered attacks in stride and manages to continue fighting in spite of his significant injuries, and barely seems to be exhausted, making him the only foe that can endure Anne's powers. When Grime strikes him in the back of his leg with Barrels Warhammer twice, he is still able to walk after the first attack and responds to the second strike with annoyance and swats him aside with no indication that he was seriously affected by the blow. He's even able to survive getting run through by Anne at the end of their final battle despite losing half of his body and was apparently able to live for 9 months or more afterwards and take up a life of farming (albeit while having to use Barrel's hammer as a crutch).
  • Swordsmanship: Andrias is able to wield his flame sword with great skill and accuracy. He was able to block lasers fired by Lief in his youth, was able to send a shockwave through the ground to stun his enemies and used it to single handedly hold the line against the Resistance army.
  • Energy Shield: During his first fight with Anne, he briefly conjured an energy shield to block an enhanced punch from her. While Anne did successfully break through the shield in the end, it did hold out for over a few seconds, indicating that it is incredibly durable.
  • Dyoplosaurus: The Dyoplosaurus is a mech-suit that Andrias pilots and uses in his final fight with Anne. Andrias is shown to be skilled at piloting it, able to use its speed and flight to match Anne almost blow for blow and is able to use its targeting systems with a decent amount of accuracy, launching a series of Missiles to almost blast her and at one point managed to launch plasma olms from spots on the suits tale at her. Like him, its also very durable, suffering only minor dents in its armor from Annes punches at first and even manages to endure attacks from a heron and even a boomshroom shot directly in its face. It also comes equipped with a flamethrower.

Trivia[]

  • King Andrias' name is a reference to a few things:
    • His first name derives from his species, which is a genus of giant salamanders known as "Andrias".
    • His last name is from Leviathan, a mythical creature from Hebrew mythology, often depicted as a large serpent or whale.
  • He was stated to be inspired by Vendrick from Dark Souls.
    • Both The Core and his father, King Aldrich, would later be voiced by King Vendrick's voice actor.
  • Throughout Season 2, there are several signs that Andrias is the main antagonist. For example:
    • In "Marcy at the Gates" After the Barbia-Ant invasion was thwarted, King Andrias watches Anne and Marcy within the castle from afar, as he then walks over to a chess-like board surrounded by other pieces. He then states that the pieces are beginning to fall into place, as he places a figure in appearance similar to Anne beside another figure in similar appearance to Marcy while declaring that it's time for the game to begin.
    • When Andrias was properly introduced in "The Plantars Check In", his entire body is darkly shadowed against the sunlight and has a sinister expression, followed by jovially leaning out and coming into the full light.
    • On the poster for Season 2, Andrias is far in the background and is noticeably much more darkly shadowed than the others. He also seems to look sinisterly at Anne with interest.
    • At the end of "Lost in Newtopia", when he and Marcy find the secret library wing, Andrias has a smirk on his face when Marcy runs down the stairs before following her.
    • In "A Day at the Aquarium", while explaining to Anne and the Plantars about how his ancestors who used the Calamity Box were "peaceful explorers and scientists", Andrias looks away for a brief moment while speaking in a suspicious tone. At the end of the episode, when he approaches Marcy with a proposition for her, ominous music is heard playing.
  • King Andrias has many things in common with all three human girls (Anne, Sasha, and Marcy):
    • He is a dark reflection of what Sasha could've been had she not reformed and made amends with Anne, because he also had close friends who he felt turned their back on him, most likely due to his father’s gaslighting and manipulation. Later, both were crying in tears of remorse after reading Anne's journal (for Sasha) and Leif's letter (for Andrias) and they said "Well, that ends now!" (for Sasha) and "There's no going back!" (for Andrias). But while Sasha believed in herself and became a better person, Andrias did not where he believed he was a lost cause for redemption.
    • Like Marcy, he is very intelligent, enjoys puzzles and games, and was hiding more information about the Calamity Box than he let on. However, both had their close friends, but got turned back on due to their misdeeds (although Anne and Sasha managed to forgive her). In the end, both finally realized their mistakes and willing to fix it in order to make it up (although Andrias ended up getting happily punished unlike Marcy). If Marcy couldn't move on from her friendship with Sasha and Anne, and let her fear of loneliness and abandonment gets the best of it, then she would've been ended up like Andrias.
    • He can be seen as an evil counterpart of Anne; they share blue as a color motif and they both have casual fun-loving charismatic personas. He can also represent of what Anne could've become if she let her anger and grief consume her by letting her experience of being betrayed by her friends get the best of her instead of making up with them and keeping her heart open, as Andrias allowed his friends' hurtful actions to harden him where he became a ruthless tyrant. Also, in the end, both ultimately stood up to someone who had been oppressing them for a long time (Anne stood up to Sasha and Andrias stood up to the Core/Aldrich).
      • They even paralleled each other with the exact same words: "Something I should've done a long time ago: Standing up to you!"
  • King Andrias is a foil to Grime, who is a former major antagonist of the series:
    • Both are the arc villains of their respective debut season (first season for Grime and second season for Andrias).
    • Both end up befriending one of the girls (Grime befriends Sasha, Andrias befriends Marcy), take them under their wing each, and have at least some care for the girls they each gained respect for. Interestingly, this is done in differentiating ways: Grime is revealed to legitimately care for Sasha beyond the use she has in his army, going as far as saving her life when she falls from Toad Tower, while in contrast, Andrias' friendship with Marcy is mostly shown as a massive ruse that lasts as long as she complies to his plans, and he ends up mortally wounding her when she repents from her actions and tries to send Anne back home.
      • However, in the end, it was demonstrated that Andrias indeed cared for Marcy, as shown when he begged for the Core to use another host instead of Marcy, getting permission from the Core to use her to get the Calamity Box instead of killing her, begging Anne to save her, and that because of his fear of the Core and being pressured into impressing his father Aldrich, he felt he could do nothing else than obey.
  • Many previous episodes have implied that Barrel and Leif betrayed Andrias due to having enough of him and his family's conquering ways. However, "The Core & The King" reveals that they were totally fine with it despite being good amphibians. The only reason Leif betrayed Andrias is because she saw a vision the gems causing their downfall. Due to her similar appearance to Sprig (who turned to be her actual descendent), this is probably why Andrias dropped him despite promising Anne he wouldn't if the box was returned in "True Colors".
